This issue's ‘Ruby celebration’ front cover was photographed and produced by Mo Bowman

I am very much looking forward to the farm tour of Stantyway on 3rd July and learning more about this special place. Recent visits have resulted in two ‘firsts’ for Peter and I. A few weeks ago, a curious leveret came to within just a few feet of us before deciding that we were not particularly interesting and lolloping away. More recently on a (very) early morning visit we spotted two hares enjoying their breakfast and then heard, and ultimately managed to spot, a Cirl Bunting singing lustily in the hedgerow. I have to confess that neither or us was certain as to the identity of the bird until we came upon the OVA’s new information board outside Stantyway’s honesty café (see below). What a brilliant idea! Thank you to Geoff Porter of our Natural Environment Committee for arranging this.

It was lovely to be part of the Ruby Anniversary celebrations last week and to see so many members there to mark this special occasion. Mo Bowman kindly took a number of photographs during the afternoon, a small selection of which are published in this issue and others on the website. If anyone would like copies please email [email protected].

Chairman’s Musings

Another newsletter it seems that only very recently was writing my ‘musings’ for the Sprin issue. When retired naively thouht that the conveyer belt of life would slow down. Alas the control knob isn’t working.

The AG went well in the pavilion at ewton oppleford the venue provin to be very suitable. Althouh the meetin ust failed to beat the previous record in terms of duration we manaed to et throuh the formalities in uicktime. ollowin the meetin avid White the wildlife photorapher ave us a viewin of his latest pictures of the mammals and birds to be found in our neck of the woods includin of course the famous polecats. ot only was he able to show us the pictures but he was able to speak very knowledably about the subects. t really was the hihliht of the evenin and we were amaed at the variety of creatures in our patch.

The ood news is that icola has been able to report some encourain news in her uest to try and ensure that the obectives of our Association in the plannin world are fulfilled. She has carried out her work painstakinly and with enormous dilience but now am sad to report that after si years in harness she will be steppin down. hope that we can find another member who will continue her important work.

After early sihtins of the dreaded imalayan alsam the nvironmental roup anticipated an early start to their campain. owever the cooler weather has resulted in the first pull of the season bein scheduled for th une. This first meetin is held in conunction with linton evon states and they will always ive a warm welcome to new volunteers.

The walks roup continue to report successful forays into all manner of places and numbers are continuin to hold up.

The ast evon ocal (eritae) ists Guide has taken another lurch forward. has appointed a lannin olicy Officer to deal with this proect. She has decided that those compilin this uide should have some formal trainin. ee Woods has manaed to secure some welcome fundin from the ast evon Area of Outstandin atural eauty to cover some of the epenses and is presently eplorin other possible sources. I am aware that my column on planning matters is often one of doom and gloom so it is wonderful to publicise some good news e have ust heard that an ppeals Inspector has refused an appeal to build a house in a garden in Granary ane Budleigh alterton he appellant argued that previously another ppeals Inspector had interpreted the Budleigh alterton eighbourhood lan policy as a general policy not one that specified that infill development should reflect the character of an area his original interpretation was bad news for the town as it could theoretically have opened up some unsympathetic garden development he Budleigh alterton eighbourhood lan ousing and nvironment Focus Group and the wrote strong appeal letters to the lanning Inspectorate regarding this particular proposed development in Granary ane o it was with delight that the Inspector wrote

“In my opinion this is not a general objective but a prescriptive test which requires site specific application.”

Following this news I will continue with a positive theme It is heartening that bele ree ouse left was not demolished and the bridge over the broo widened in Fore treet Budleigh alterton as was the aim of a submitted planning application in his was reected by the C planning committee he house and garden has been given tender loving care and is now an asset to the Conservation rea

I would also lie to give a good eample of garden development but I am very aware that building design is very much one of taste and I have several times been accused of not liing contemporary design I refute this as good design is good design but to my mind good design means that a house has to sit comfortably in its setting his is why the atchard mith houses in Budleigh alterton and the amson houses in idmouth are eamples of cohesiveness these architects carefully situated their houses in their plots in relation to the sun and view and in relation to the surrounding area I ased your ecutive Committee to give me
