Governor Kim Reynolds joins President Craig Rowles during the virtual 2020 IPA Fall Festival

4 Greetings from the President There is no doubt that 2020 will be a year that will be remembered by all. What started out like any other year, was quickly redefined as the impact of the pandemic coronavirus spread across the United States and the entire world. In our businesses we learned we needed to make significant changes to help protect the health and welfare of our employees. Many producers experienced market disruptions when normally functioning supply chains were thrown into disarray.

The same disruptions were also felt at the association. We started the year with our third annual Issues Conference and Day on the Hill. Our attendees and Emerging Leaders were able to meet with legislators and build on important relationships. That was the last major in person event of the year.

This was the year of the 50th anniversary of the Fall Festival and Annual Meeting. We had all hoped for a special event to celebrate that milestone. We did move forward with the golf outing and clay shooting events in a more socially distanced fashion. The committee, however, made the appropriate decision to cancel the in-person meeting and transition to a virtual event for the Pre-Conference, Educational Program, Auction, Raffle, and Awards Programs. I want to thank the committee and the IPA staff who worked behind the scenes to make these events happen.

I see signs of hope as we look toward 2021. Science has moved at breakneck speed to develop vaccines to protect the public. Never underestimate man’s ingenuity to adapt in a changing environment and never underestimate the associations commitment to support the Iowa Poultry industry. I encourage you to join committees and share your opinions on how to best move this industry forward.

Best wishes to all in 2021 and thank you for your continued support of the Iowa Poultry and Egg community.

Dr. Craig Rowles, President Iowa Poultry Association

5 Iowa Poultry Association Year in Review

2020 was a year of anxiety and stress for our poultry and egg community, and also for many of our customers and consumers. Words like “pivot” and “social distancing” have become part of our daily conversations.

In accordance with our mission statement, “Iowa Poultry Association actively raises confidence in the poultry community through leadership, support, advocacy and education,” we continue to work towards the following initiatives:

Leadership

• Delivering on a strategic plan which will serve as a blueprint for IPA over the next five years. The plan will guide the board and staff in the coming years. • Introduced our third IPA Emerging Leaders Class; each year, the program gains momentum and we add more quality alum. • IPA committees are engaging nearly 180 individual IPA members to help IPA become stronger, have a more active membership, and thrive. • Increased our role with involvement with other agriculture groups on initiatives that benefit the poultry community and all of agriculture. • Held our 3rd Annual IPA Issues Conference.

Support

• Partnered with Iowa Egg Council, Iowa Egg farmers, and the Iowa poultry community to support a historic Cracking Hunger egg donation program for Iowa Food Banks - reached an excess of 45,000 dozen eggs donated every month. • Encouraged Iowa’s poultry producers to work with nutrient management partners to protect the environment while also being good neighbors. • Maintained contact with producers and relayed their COVID struggles on to elected officials, achieved State and Federal funding assistance for our producer community. • Focused on labor & workforce issues; addressing infrastructure improvements in rural Iowa. • Created a Layer Vet Advisory and Youth Engagement Committees • Continued to support the direction and initiatives of the Iowa Egg Council.

6 Advocacy

• Continued to refine our Policy and Legislative Advocacy process allowing for member input, information sharing and frequent engagement opportunities. This process provides for Fall Policy Meetings, the creation of a legislative priorities booklet, policy positions summary document, position papers, the engagement of the IPA Legislative Committee, and our third Issues Conference and Day on the Hill. • Stepped outside core poultry industry issues for discussions with policy makers and engaged on issues related to revitalization of rural Iowa, key topics included quality & affordable housing, access to healthcare and childcare, broadband access, quality schools, community activities, and more. • Visited with the entire Iowa Congressional delegation regarding our industry including COVID challenges and impacts. We shared position papers and specifically addressed key issues related to labor needs, international trade, tax reform, and checkoff rules. • Held IPA’s Day on the Hill where 40+ IPA members met with state lawmakers and represented IPA at the State Capitol discussing issues facing rural Iowans.

Education

• The 2020 Fall Festival and Annual Meeting necessitated adapting to a new normal, hosting virtual pre-conference program, educational programs, and awards program. • IPA, along with the Iowa Egg Council, has created a 501c3 scholarship foundation, and are realizing our vision for increasing egg and poultry youth scholarships. Approximately $200,000 has been raised thus far. • Coordinated the creation of the Hatchery Technician Certificate program at DMACC • Expanded and strengthened our monthly webinar series. Feedback has been tremendous and have addressed critical and timely industry topics. • Partnered with NPIP to assist our members with biosecurity. • Provided critical and relevant updates, including an enhanced member newsletter, and a weekly member spotlight.

If we didn’t have the support of our sponsors, partners, and most importantly, our members, we couldn’t ac- complish all that we have this past year. 2020 was a tumultous and challenging year for Iowa Poultry Industry, and we’ve got our sights set on a much better 2021! 7 Iowa Poultry Association Staff Kevin Stiles Sarah Bowman Executive Director, CEO Director of Industry Affairs

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig takes time in the Capitol rotunda to visit with IPA Emerging Leaders

45 46 National Poultry Improvement Plan Annual Report Iowa’s National Poultry Improvement Plan is currently comprised of 56 breeders and hatcheries, 47 participating chick dealers, 281 certified blood testing agents, 106 commercial layer premises, 130 commercial turkey premises processing at three participating NPIP audited plants and a growing broiler industry that process their birds at one NPIP audited plant in Iowa, however most are processed in neighboring states.

We are well into our second round of commercial biosecurity policy audits. Since the HPAI Interim Final Rule became official on September 14, 2018, requiring eligible commercial participants to have their biosecurity policy audited every other year, 98% of Iowa producers have completed their first audit satisfactorily. Thank you to all our Iowa producers who take the practice of biosecurity as seriously as it should be to keep disease out of our flocks.

Iowa Poultry Association continues to work on our member’s behalf to improve disease response plans in cooperation with federal and state authorities as well as other commodity groups. Each year the Iowa Poultry Disease Response and Emergency Preparedness (I-PREP) committee meets to discuss our industry and state’s plans with regard to Low Pathogenic Avian Influenza. This year we held our first annual Allied Biosecurity Workshop to engage those members who supply Iowa’s collective ‘all-feather’ poultry industry. Please contact us if you are interested in attending workshops like this.

Our communication efforts to small flock producers continue to be enhanced in order to improve our flock’s overall health and biosecurity practices. Newly offered this year were free Biosecurity Consultations, offered to operations of all sizes, to ensure those eligible were equipped to pass their first NPIP Biosecurity Audit. Additional biosecurity resources are now available via the IPA website here https://www.iowapoultry.com/biosecurity.

Also, we continue to offer free Avian Influenza PCR testing kits as well as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits. Free AGID egg testing continues to be available to layer flocks of less than 10,000 birds. More information on this offer and more may be found at www.IowaPoultry.com/small-flock-information.

We look forward to providing further education and best practices information in the year ahead! Please contact us for more information or if you have any questions.

68 A new and improved bacterial growth procedure for Autogenous Vacccines

Phibro is implementing the use of EASE technology to grow bacteria such as Salmonella, E. coli and other Gram-negative organisms for its autogenous vaccines production.

Benefits • EASE results in an upregulation of proteins on the bacterial surface in its natural form • EASE ensures a higher ratio of immunogenic proteins to other superficial proteins leading to a more focused immune response from the host animal • EASE implementation leads to a purer, more defined vaccine product

Potency and efficacy of autogenous biologics have not been established. Phibro Autogenous Vaccines are developed with MVP Adjuvants®
