Dear Friend of the USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum,

I am pleased to present the Museum’s 2018-19 Annual Report. The Museum’s fi rst and most important artifact is USS Hornet herself, and she stands today a National and State Historic Landmark with a mission to preserve, educate, and inspire. It is due to our volunteers, staff, and generous donors that we can pursue this mission, growing programs and improving outreach with each new year.

One of the most unique assets of the USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum is our ability to teach science through history, making complex Scientifi c, Technological, Engineering, and Mathmatical (STEM) theories approachable with examples of tangible applications throughout the ship. Innovation and history are tightly intertwined, and there are few places where both are so authentic and immersive.

The Museum prides itself on the quality of our educational programming, and we regularly test and update our programs to meet the needs of our students. This year, we introduced the “Night Ops” option to our popular Live-Aboard overnight program—attendees who sign up for a Night Ops-themed overnight visit several STEM workshops throughout their evening tour, exploring concepts such as the four forces of flight, mechanical advantage, and kinetic and potential energy.

This fi scal year saw several momentous anniversary dates. In November 2018, the Museum celebrated both the 75th Anniversary of the commissioning of USS Hornet (CV-12) and the 20th Anniversary of the opening of the USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum. We also launched our “Year of Apollo” celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo space program. We have held numerous events so far and the celebration will culminate later next month, July 2019, with the 50th Anniversary of , that “one giant leap for mankind” and USS Hornet’s recovery of the capsule and Apollo crew after their in the Pacifi c Ocean.

Again, thank you for your continued support of the Museum and we look forward to seeing you around the Museum throughout the year.

Ray A. Fortney Chairman, Board of Trustees

Page 4, USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum Annual Report, Fiscal Year 2018-2019 FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, the staff, and all our dedicated volunteers, it is my great pleasure to share with you our Annual Report for the fi scal year 2018-2019.

During this past year, the USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum continued to fulfi ll our mission by expanding education and other programs and undertaking several new challenges while receiving nationwide media recognition, particularly during our celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing on the Moon. We are looking at a strong 2019, in great part thanks to the generosity of our stakeholders and donors as we grow and improve our programming, events, and exhibits.

Our daytime and overnight Education Programs—especially those in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)—have grown in reach and quality content. Each year, we have seen an average growth in attendance of 14% and, since 2012, have welcomed nearly 90,000 students through our doors. Our newest program, our “Night Ops” STEM-themed overnight option, has been very successful and facilitates grades 3-12 touring throughout the ship with interactive workshops stationed between historic spaces that show real-world applications of STEM concepts.

We saw exciting new exhibitions and the completion of several restoration projects. One of our most exciting exhibit opportunities was the installation of Gone but not Forgotten: The Sinking of CV-8, which was born from the recent rediscovery of USS Hornet (CV-8) in the Pacifi c by the crew of the Research Vessel Petrel, sponsored by the Paul Allen Foundation. Restoration of ship spaces and aircraft included much-needed restoration of Aircraft Elevator #1 and the fi nal stages of refurbishment of our F8U-1 Crusader.

One of the Museum’s greatest assets is its versatility, and this includes our ability to act as one of the most unique rental venues in the Bay Area. This year saw venue bookings including Adobe Photoshop, National Geographic, Rotary District 5170, and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Looking ahead to next month, July 2019, we’ve been given a unique opportunity to partner with Jeep to showcase some of their newest vehicles on our Hangar and Flight Decks.

Preserving a ship as large as Hornet is an ongoing challenge, but the dedication and commitment of the staff and volunteers continues to keep us strong. This has been an exciting year for the Museum and we thank you, again, for your support. We hope you will continue sailing with us over the horizon and into the future.

Michael McCarron Executive Director

PRESERVING THE PAST COLLECTIONS & EXHIBITIONS A museum’s exhibitions and permanent collection are its heart and soul, and here at the USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum our artifact collection is a direct reflection of our organization’s mission. With the help of a dedicated volunteer group, we continue to expand and professionalize our artifacts care and documentation.

Our Registrar reports that our Permanent Collection now contains over 20,000 artifacts! We were offered 57 batches of donated items during the 2018-2019 fi scal year, highlights of which include a 1924 Navy boat cloak, a WWII Japanese rifle with battle damage, and a set of over 200 letters from a Hornet sailor that he religiously mailed to his wife back home. The Museum’s Restoration volunteers also found some artifacts on board from when the ship was in service that were added to the collection, including items such as comic books found above an air vent and a sailor’s liberty pass stashed inside a crew locker.

On the exhibitions side of the department, the team installed Gone but not Forgotten: The Sinking of CV- 8. Visitors saw fi rst-hand stories of the sinking of USS Hornet (CV-8) through personal accounts of the sinking from the men aboard, and artifacts such as a life vest worn by one of the survivors, ID cards, and journals carried by the survivors during evacuation. The installation of this exhibit was timed to meet the discovery of the remains of CV-8 by the crew of the Research Vessel Petrel, sponsored by the Paul Allen Foundation. They found our ship’s predecessor just east of the Solomon Islands, on the bottom of the Pacifi c Ocean about three miles below the surface.

The other large project for the Exhibitions Team, which is still ongoing, has been an improvement of the Offi cers’ Wardroom. With a generous grant from the Navy Supply Corps Foundation, we have been able to install a replicated historic meal that was served to Hornet’s offi cers in 1969, as well as expand our other displays in the Wardroom such as our Evolution of the Aircraft Carrier exhibit.

A surviving life vest from USS Hornet CV-8, along with other artifacts and personal accounts, is on display for the Gone but not Forgotten: The Sinking of CV-8 exhibit.

Page 7, USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum Annual Report, Fiscal Year 2018-2019 VOLUNTEER DIVISIONS The Museum’s events, exhibits, and programming would not be possible without the service of a dedicated volunteer crew. In Fiscal Year 2018-2019, the USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum maintained a volunteer crew of around 350 individuals who actively participated in the staffi ng, preservation, and maintenance of the Museum. The Museum’s crew successfully supported all annual Community Events in addition to the 75th anniversary events that took place in November 2018.

The volunteer crew consists of ten (10) divisions: Docents, Safety & Security, Ship Maintenance & Restoration, Aircraft Restoration, Community Outreach, Public Programs (Live-Aboard), Education, Museum Collections & Exhibits, Radio Division, and our newest division, Information Technology.

All the individuals in these divisions put in a total of approximately 47,225 hours of labor during fi scal year 2019! They literally and fi guratively keep USS Hornet afloat. DOCENTS Our Docents are the face and personality of the ship. They are the real deal as most are ex-military, many of whom served on Hornet or one of her sister ships. They know fi rsthand the trials her crew faced during the three decades she proudly served the nation. Docents are all volunteers, and members of this volunteer division are aboard 7 days a week touring our visitors and relating the stories, history, and personal moments which punctuate the life of a sailor, airman, or corpsman during his time on the ship. Our visitors consistently give us shining reviews, not only for the knowledge we have, but the Docents like Dale Berven are invaluable for school fi eld trips. Their personal accounts and presentations help bring history to life! ability to connect with our guest on a personal level and introduce the newest generation to what they inherited from the Greatest Generation.

Our Docent team has also been a great asset for Museum Programing, Outreach, and Private Events, acting as ambassadors for the ship and her history as well as sharing the educational mission of the USS Hornet Sea Air & Space Museum.

SHIP RESTORATION The Ship Restoration Division is responsible for the restoration of spaces and equipment on the ship to bring it back to operational, or near-operational, standards. The ship is a National and State Historic Landmark, so anything done to restore it must be done to original specifi cations.

Page 8, USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum Annual Report, Fiscal Year 2018-2019 Over the 2018-2019 fi scal year, Ship Restoration has completed and initiated projects including: restoration and maintenance of the Aircraft Elevator #1, the Fantail, Scissor Lift/ Handicap Ramp, Forward Auxiliary, Special Weapons, and general refurbishment of Passageways, Ladders, and Public Spaces.

This past year, we also started a subdivision of Ship Restoration called Ground Support Equipment (GSE). They are responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of all mobile Ship Restoration is made up of dedicated volunteers like those who built a equipment, such Aircraft Tugs, Tow new lift ramp for the Museum. Several from Restoration have been with us Bars, Forklifts, Scissor lifts etc. since the Museum opened!

AIRCRAFT RESTORATION The Aircraft Restoration Division refurbishes and maintains all aircraft at the Museum. Hornet’s aircraft are acquired through either a donation to the Museum or through permanent loan from the National Museum of Naval Aviation.

Currently, we are completing a refurbishment of our F8U-1 Crusader and beginning the paint process of our US-2B Tracker. Once the Crusader is completed, we will then move our F-4N Phantom into the restoration area to begin a planned 3-year restoration process. All the aircraft on display here at the Museum still have the actual Bureau Number assigned to the aircraft by the Navy and Marines.

In addition, all Hornet aircraft are also accurately restored both externally and internally (in particular, the cockpit). This faithful restoration is completed by our Aircraft Restoration Division as a tribute to the men and women who produced, flew, and maintained the aircraft. It is has also been a valuable training tool with our STEM Programs as a way to visualize the advancement of aviation technology even during Hornet’s commissioned years. Our cockpit “Clementine” gets the occasional tune-up from Aircraft Restoration to keep her in fi ghting shape for outreach events both onboard and off ship!

Page 9, USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum Annual Report, Fiscal Year 2018-2019 SAFETY & SECURITY The Safety & Security Division operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There is always someone on the ship from this division protecting the ship and her artifacts, in addition to maintaining safety protocols for our guests.

The Museum depends on the Safety & Security Division for all of our major events, both public and private, and we appreciate the long hours they dedicate to maintaining safety aboard the Museum.

RADIO DIVISION The Radio Division restores and maintains vintage radio and electronic equipment for display in museum exhibits and creates new interactive displays which highlight how ship’s systems function. This division assists all ship’s personnel with proper use and maintenance of shipboard communication radios, supports our STEM program with training activities, and manages the Hornet Amateur Radio Club (HARC).

Thousands of contacts are made by HARC each year with amateur radio operators throughout the world, many of whom served in the military and appreciate our keeping USS Hornet “on the air.”

When we hosted Smithsonian’s traveling exhibit “Mail Call” in our Foc’s’le in late 2018, Ship Restoration and the Ship’s Engineering team took the opportunity to clean and paint the space. They help make our exhibitions shine!

Page 10, USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum Annual Report, Fiscal Year 2018-2019 EDUCATING THE PRESENT EDUCATION PROGRAMS The Education Department continues to bring the history and technology of the ship to life for K-12 students and visitors of all ages through its innovative programming. The STEM-to-Stern programs for daytime fi eld trips have developed into a solid program that provides an engaging STEM experience for students and their teachers; many schools have become repeat visitors.

The Night Ops overnight theme A breakdown of Educational Programming during the 2018-2019 fi scal year. brings STEM content to the overnight In total, the Education Department hosted 12,143 visitors for the year. programming. With a cross-curricular approach that connects STEM and history, students learn about real-life engineering applications while also benefi tting from the experience and expertise of our Docents and staff educators. In addition, our educators often work with teachers to adapt these programs for special-needs students, including those with mobility or learning issues.

Looking forward, the Education Department is focused on building on its proven content to increase accessibility to quality STEM and history education for even more students. Generous grants have already provided transportation and program scholarships to students who otherwise would not be able to visit the Museum. To reach more students and provide classroom resources for teachers, the Education Department is developing an online, virtual STEM classroom program featuring the STEM lessons taught on the ship. In the future, these will be adapted into professional development opportunities for educators. Junior Rosies joined us for one of our STEM Night Ops overnights! You’re never too young to learn how to build a catapult!

Page 11, USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum Annual Report, Fiscal Year 2018-2019 PUBLIC PROGRAMS & COMMUNITY OUTREACH This year’s accomplishments for our Public Programs and Outreach included successful celebrations of our nation’s history and those who served and continue to serve. Memorial Day, Pearl Harbor Day, the 65th anniversary of the end of the Korean War, and Veteran’s Day were all observed with speakers and extra events and exhibits. Veteran’s Day was a very important milestone this year as it marked the 100th year since the armistice that ended WWI, the 75th year since the commissioning of USS Hornet, and the 20th year since USS Hornet became a museum. Other successful events included our 4th of July event, Smithsonian Day, and our Robotics event. Our Women In Space & Aviation panel in January, part of We also continue to showcase our popular our Apollo 50th Anniversary programming, was a big hit! cockpits at fundraising and community outreach Moderated by Sarah Cruddas, guests included Catherine Keys, Wendy L. Volunteers in this division travel to community events (fairs, festivals, and schools) to represent the USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum.

VISITOR SERVICES As the front-line operational arm of the Museum, the Visitor Service Team handles the Admissions Desk, Ship’s Store, Flight Simulator, and works tirelessly to assist our guests wherever needed. Our Visitor Services team is both the fi rst and last impression many visitors have of the Museum and their visit, and the team takes that responsibility seriously.

The Ship’s Store is the culminating stop for many visitors before they leave for the day, and we see a Capture Rate of 21%. The Ship’s Store staff continually updates and curates the inventory with items that reinforce and reflect what the visitors enjoyed while aboard. For example, a growing selection of items geared to STEM concepts did well this past winter with the overnight visitors. The team carefully monitors sales trends to determine comfortable price points for our customers and balances top- selling items and new items to keep things lively and fresh, particularly since Museum crew are some of the store’s best customers! Guests are keen to take something home that specifi cally says “USS Hornet,” and we’re happy to oblige. In general, we make sure all of the products we select support the Museum’s mission to “preserve, educate, and inspire” in some form or fashion.

Page 12, USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum Annual Report, Fiscal Year 2018-2019 INSPIRING THE FUTURE OVERNIGHT PROGRAMS In our widely recognized overnight programming, youth, school, and adult groups from around the world spend a night with us either in our history-based Live-Aboard program or our STEM Night Ops program. Every year we welcome fi rst-time as well as returning programming participants—some groups have been joining us year for over a decade!

This past year we have been building up to July 2019’s 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 splashdown by hosting numerous events that celebrate other Apollo anniversaries. This includes a special overnight that commemorated the 50th Anniversary of Apollo 8 in December when we highlighted Apollo and aerospace history and the spaces of the ship that had been used and upgraded during Hornet’s Apollo recovery mission!

PRIVATE EVENTS The USS Hornet is a great asset to the Bay Area catering to all demographics and providing event spaces from small get-togethers to large ship buyouts. This year the private events department accommodated a diverse range of personal and corporate events, hosting up to 1,200 guests and utilizing all the ship’s spaces. Simultaneously, the team hosted weddings, birthdays, club and team building events, and fi lm shoots for clients as far as Europe.

Other venue bookings included Adobe Photoshop, National Geographic, Rotary District 5170, and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. We also saw a return of local clients such as Google, PG&E, Fire Department, and Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter.
