COMMENDATORY RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Mark Torres is the host and founder of the award-winning music show, Travel Tips For Aztlan, which is broadcast Saturday night on Pacifica Radio KPFK 90.7 FM in Los Angeles; and

WHEREAS, since its debut in March, 1995 Mark Torres’ legendary show was the first of its kind to feature the music of the Latino youth culture; and

WHEREAS, his show gave a voice to the previously unknown music from an underrepresented community and now features both emerging talent and international superstars; and

WHEREAS, several bands who have performed live on Travel Tips For Aztlan and KPFK for their radio debuts have gone on to win Grammy or , including Ozomatli, Lila Downs, Gaby Moreno, Quetzal, La Santa Cecilia, Flor de Toloache and ; and

WHEREAS, Mark Torres has conducted interviews with international artists like Manu Chao, Draco Rosa, Mon Laferte, Cafe Tacuba, Enrique Bunbury, Vampiro of Mana; and

WHEREAS, Mark Torres also conducted the first Los Angeles interview with comedy troupe Culture Clash in 1990 and with Rock and Roll legends John Densmore, Jackson Browne, Hall of Fame engineer Eddie Kramer, John Storyk, architect of Electric Lady Studios, Herb Alpert, and many more; and

WHEREAS, Travel Tips for Aztlan has been a historic platform for social justice in Los Angeles giving voice to teachers, farm workers, janitors, nurses, and immigration attorneys and activists and creates important space for all independent artists in music, film, poetry', theatre, education, activism and other arts who need space to reach greater audiences with their work; and

WHEREAS, Mark Torres' contribution to the growth of the scene was rewarded in 2002 when Travel Tips For Aztlan was chosen as “Best Radio Show” by the Los Angeles Magazine and in 1998 when it was chosen as the “Best Latin Rock Show” by the international magazine La Banda Elastica;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Los Angeles City Council congratulates Mark Torres on the 25th anniversary of his show Travel Tips for Aztlan and commends him for his exemplary contributions to the City of Los Angeles.

WHEREAS, on October 27, 2020, Olive View - UCLA Medical Center celebrates its centennial; and

WHEREAS, originally designed and built as the largest tuberculosis sanitarium in the western United States in 1920, Olive View became home to scores of TB patients and participated in TB drug studies searching for a cure; and

WHEREAS, once an effective TB drug therapy was discovered and patients no longer needed a sanitarium health care setting, Olive View became an official general hospital in 1959; and

WHEREAS, in 1970, the hospital became a teaching facility affiliated with the UCLA School of Medicine; and

WHEREAS, a new state-of-the art hospital was opened on January 9, 1971, but was then destroyed in the 1971 Sylmar earthquake one month later and in 1973, the hospital was temporarily relocated to Van Nuys during rebuilding, and eventually the current hospital building opened on May 10, 1987; and

WHEREAS, over the last 25 years, Olive View has endured several natural disasters, including damaging earthquakes and fires, but always emerged stronger and more resolute to provide care to the patient population; and

in the past nine years, Olive View enhanced services by opening a new state-of-the art Emergency Department, Infection Control Unit and Psychiatric Emergency Room Unit; and

WHEREAS, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Olive View staff have remained vigilant and dedicated to providing the highest level of quality patient care;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Los Angeles City Council congratulates Olive View - UCLA Medical Center on its centennial and commends its exemplary contributions to the City of Los Angeles.
