Considering that cricket originated some 500 years ago It should be expected that the rules be simpler now to know If one reads about the rules and the game as it is listed Then one’s understanding will quickly be twisted.

Consider for example the expressions in and out. The team that is in has most of its player sitting out. The whole of the other team are out in the field Until the in team are out or have enough to yield.

The men’s balls weigh 5.5 ounces, the women’s 5 ounces dead Depending on the match, the balls can be coloured white or red. No scuffing, cuts or roughing is allowed but polishing is accepted. If there is any doubt the game is stopped and the ball is then inspected.

It would seem that security surely needs an upgrade The reported loss of wickets: maybe they have only been mislaid. But the loss of the opener is serious news indeed How can the salmon sandwiches be made and will the tea proceed.

The names of the players caught out are on the scorecard So the apprehension of the thieves should not be very hard. What with the loss of wickets, opener, bats and men It must be a costly business to replace them now and then

To the uninitiated some of the expressions will mystify. There’s a china man, a googly and maybe a bye. A short leg, cow corner and silly point if you’re bolder Let us try a simpler sport before we get much older.

News and forthcoming events

In true form, SAODS have had a busy and successful in this first half of 2019 bringing high quality musical theatre entertainment to local audiences.

This year, because of all the newcomers to our area, we have been more active in trying to attract new audiences and members. You may have seen our stall at Stewartby and Wootton Fun Days. Many residents, old and new stopped to talk to us. Happily, we have had several offers of help including photography, back stage, scenery painting and performing.

As a member of our society, you will have opportunity to become involved in a wide range of activities. Earlier in the year we presented a light hearted Spring Review to packed and appreciative audiences. We are currently rehearsing for another concert to raise funds for EVC Uganda, which provides educational support for disadvantaged children. Later in the year, November 12th-23rd we will presenting our major production, ’The Pirates of Penzance’. Don’t miss this exciting and ever popular piece of Gilbert and Sullivan which promises to be action packed and highly entertaining.

I went down to the silversmith to see him ply his trade I sat and watched him carefully to see how things were made.

The process of refining was a time consuming task And as I lingered near I felt prevailed upon to ask.

"Sir, do you watch the whole time the refining going on?

“O yes” replied the silversmith “I stay however long And keep my eyes fixed on the furnace for the necessary time For should the firing be exceeded when the silver’s at it’s prime By the smallest of degrees, why then the product could be scarred So I stay here by the furnace lest the product should be marred.”

I marvelled as I watched him, never stirring from his seat Then asked “How do you know Sir. when the process is complete?

“That’s simple” said the silversmith, and smiled in my direction “The refining’s over when in there I see my own reflection”
