Investment in training pays dividends in time and quality for Queen Anne Painting
When you meet members of Queen Anne Painting, one thing is immediately apparent: they have a distinct love and passion for their craft. For nearly 40 years, the Seattle- based company has become known for its precise way of doing business, also known as The Queen Anne Way. This mindset is demonstrated in the way the team carefully considers projects, effectively communicates project details with customers, and executes those projects with expert craftsmanship. Although most of the team at Queen Anne started with little to no experience, they have grown into skilled craftsmen. The system they have in place, with specific processes and training, allows novice workers to develop specialized skills relatively quickly—all while maintaining respect for the craft. The idea is simple: one person at Queen Anne specializes in making sure all of the craftsmen are not only trained on the tools, but constantly shown new techniques and technologies. It’s an intentional process to create the strongest team possible—and it’s working.

This multi-step program brings in budding talent and not only nurtures these workers, but helps them grow into skilled craftsmen. The training helps reduce turnover and fosters an environment where the Queen Anne team feels motivated to learn and perfect its craft. “What we do is very tangible,” says project manager Simon Fraser. “We start with a project that looks a certain way and we have the opportunity to really transform that space. Our work is meaningless if we can’t step back and enjoy what we’ve accomplished, for the customer and our trade.” The “big reveal” is something Fraser loves being a part of: “There’s just a tremendous moment of pride in seeing a customer’s reaction and knowing what went into the final product—hundreds of man-hours of preparation, restoring surfaces and, ultimately, applying the finish.” Queen Anne specializes in interior and exterior residential projects across the Pacific Northwest. No two days are the same, and that’s something this team loves about what they do. One project in particular, the interior restoration of a contemporary-style home on Shilshole Bay, provided a variety of challenges and opportunities that allowed this paint crew to put their skills to work. From countertops and cabinets to doors, walls and ceilings, the project required a lot of specialized tools to achieve the customer’s desired look. First up: surface preparation. The previous homeowners had dogs, so the customer wanted Queen Anne to remove all of the surface scratches for cleaner, smoother finishes. In this case, surface preparation was paramount to the project’s goals, and couldn’t have been achieved without Festool. “Festool sanders help me do tasks that I couldn’t do before because I’m able to control so much more,” recalls Howard Churchill, lead painter for Queen Anne. “With more control, we’re able to sand down a surface without damaging the veneer, which ultimately saves us and the customer money.” “We especially love the Rotex models,” Fraser noted. “The dual modes save us so much time and energy, it’s unreal. One setting allows us to prep surfaces—areas of paint build and bare wood—and the other smooths out the surface. It’s definitely a time saver.” The house had a lot of custom woodwork—bookshelves, TV cabinets, closet systems, desks—and reaching every inch of these features with a sander presented a logistical challenge. In these cases, the ergonomics and precision of the Festool finish and detail sanders made all the difference. Not only were corners easy to reach, but

When it comes to tools, Sergio Mendez and his team look for reliability, longevity and cleanliness on the jobsite
Sergio Mendez was a child when he was first introduced to the paint industry. His father enlisted his help on projects during the summers. Given the clientele in the Malibu– Bel-Air region, all of his father’s jobs were completely custom, and Mendez admired the attention to detail and beauty in the final restorations. Flash-forward almost 50 years, and Mendez is running his own company, which is currently celebrating 30 years in the business.
It’s rare to encounter someone like Mendez, a self-made man who works with his hands and absolutely loves what he does. He has a family to provide for and a reputation to uphold, and he’s worked hard for both. His team is just as passionate, tackling projects to execute the vision of its leader. The energy on Mendez’s job sites is electric, and makes you excited to see the finished product.

When it comes to tools, Mendez looks for reliability, longevity and cleanliness. His clients are unique, and sometimes they’re on tight deadlines, which means he and his crew can’t afford to experience downtime. He works in expansive homes that require a lot of work and movement from room to room. Sometimes, the homeowners are still living in the space, making cleanliness imperative to Mendez’s team.
