Philip Ware~LLB (Hons) (QIT), LLM (QUT)

Philip is a lawyer of over 20 years standing with broad experience divided between first tier private practice (Allens) and in-house practice (Stanwell/Tarong Energy) and between litigation/ADR and commercial/ transactional matters.

In 2001 he became the General Counsel of Tarong Energy Corporation, a major Owned Corporation. In 2011 he became the General Counsel of the restructured which includes assets of the previous Stanwell Corporation, Tarong Energy Corporation and CS Energy.

Philip commenced legal practice in Commercial Litigation, moved through Banking, Finance, Property and Infrastructure and now specialises in Energy & Resources (Electricity, Coal, Gas, Water, Procurement, Derivatives& Carbon).

Stanwell Corporation (amalgamated with Tarong Energy Corporation)

Over the last decade as General Counsel at Tarong Energy / Stanwell, Philip has attended to the wide-ranging legal affairs of a major Government-owned utility with interests in power stations, wind farms, coal resources and coal mining, gas and water.

His energy &resources work has included the construction and operation of coal, gas, water and wind powered power stations, the acquisition, development and operation of coal mines, acquisitions and joint ventures, construction and procurement, safety, trade practices, environment, commodity trading,derivatives and native title.

His general corporate experience has included corporate governance, executive management, probity and ethics, industrial relations,human resources, information and communication technology, riskmanagement, legal compliance, investigations and audit,crisis management,insurance and related litigation and ADR processes.

Employed by a GOC his work has also included the sometimes challenging interface between Government ownership andCorporations Act structure, obligations and disciplines in the highly competitive private electricity sector. This has included compliance with general public law (Crime and Misconduct Act, FOI / Right to Information Act and Public Information Disclosure Act), special legislative directions (eg.under the GOC Act, Electricity Act andWater Act) and various public sector policies (eg. the State Procurement Policy) and participating in various inquiries, investigations and reviews(such as the Queensland Floods Commission of Inquiry).

Sciaccas Lawyers & Consultants

For a short time Philip was the Head of Corporate and Government Advisory at Sciaccas. He also attended to, or oversaw, significant commercial litigation, property trust related work for the Industry Superannuation Property Trust (ISPT) and, occasionally,finance work for Aussie Home Loans. His core achievements at Sciaccas were the procurement and implementation of a new ICT and cutting edge practice management / accounting system, representing a number of parties at the Shepardson Inquiryinto Electoral Fraud and, through his work for ISPT, setting the groundwork for a merger with Melbourne’s Holding Redlich Lawyers and Consultants.

Allens Linklaters (prev Allens Arthur Robinson and Feez Ruthning)

Philip commenced his career in commercial litigation at Feez Ruthning, especially defending foreign currency loan cases for Westpac and a major intellectual property case for Santos.

After secondments to Westpac and Queensland Cement (extended) he returned to Allens moving into Banking, Finance, Property and Infrastructure work for the Queensland Investment Corporation (QIC), National Mutual / AXA, Lend Lease, the Queensland Government and Hong Kong Bank of Australia (HKBA).

He finished his time at Allens with an internal part-time secondment as National Risk Management Lawyer.

Other

Philip takes great pride in having mentored a number of practitioners who have gone on to in- house roles at, for example, Bechtel, Peabody Coal, Virgin Blue, Senex Energy and QGC (British Gas).

He has previously been a QLS Accredited Mediator.

Philip has a life long interest in Japanese art and culture and has practised various Japanese martial arts since university, one for over 20 years. In 2010 he and his backpack undertook a1200kmpilgrimage around the 88 Temples of Shikoku (the Shikoku HachijūhachikashoMeguri).
