Both boats were named and officially launched on Sunday 3rd June with guests and members invited. Fund raising remains at the forefront of our activities to make on going purchases possible.

The May RYA Sailing Course ran with 11 participants with light winds and plenty of sunshine. Certificates for Level 1, Level 2 and RYA Seamanship were awarded. The next course will be held in September.

WSSC/Reva is due its annual RYA inspection in October.

25 Water Activity Sessions and 3 Sailing Courses have been or will be safely completed by the end of September with over 800 young people taking part. Instructors / Permit Holders and Members are working hard to make each ses- sions successful. Keeping up with the training of instructors is paramount to keeping the centre running.

We are encouraged to see more groups from Wharfedale District taking part and some are becoming interested in becoming Group Members and making the use of the centre on a regular self-help basis. You can find out more about what is on offer at Reva on the website. Cath Britton (Secretary WSSC)

Annual Torch Race Scouts from across Wharfedale competed on the 11th May in the Annual Torch Race up Otley Chevin. Traditionally all Sections are inspected in uniform with 1st BR Scouts being declared the smartest with Burley Explorers.

1st BR fielded 2 mixed teams beat off the completion to win the coveted Torch. The winning group will now get to keep the torch for one year. Ilkley Explorers won the Explorers competi- tion.

The Torch Race was first held in 1935 as part of the celebrations of the Silver Jubilee of King George V and Queen Mary. It was carried on that occasion by the Scouts of Otley from the Jubi- lee Clock in Otley to the summit of the Chevin. it was then used to light the Beacon on the Sur- prise View, which was one of a chain throughout Britain to celebrate the Jubilee. After the 1935 celebrations, the torch was presented to the Scouts of Otley, and in May each subsequent year, the Scouts have arranged to hold a relay from the town centre to a flagpole placed on the site of the original beacon.

The DC presented the trophies & said “...how wonderful it was to see so many teams and the dedication of all the leaders to ensure this event goes from strength to strength…” St Georges Day Parade Wharfedale District Scouts Paraded from The Riverside Gardens in Ilkley to Ilkley Parish Church with over 500 scouts from across the District taking part, the Church was filled to capacity. Addingham Group organised the Service with a play about the story of St George involving lots of their young people. Maz Jennings helped to read the Story. The Vicar, the Rev Jill Perrett men- tioned words which are important to Scouts & their beliefs / teachings i.e. God, Faith, Peace, Friends & Truth. Each year the Scout Law & Promise is repeated & confirms our commitment to the principals of Scouting.

Ilkley Air Cadets very kindly headed the parade with their small Band & a bag piper from Addingham also helped.

We would like to extend our thanks to all the Commissioners, Executive Members, Leaders and Supporters for all they do to support and develop Scouting in the District, one of the largest at nearly 1000 members. As we all know, it's the combination of the talent and commitment ofall our Scouting family that makes Scouting here in Wharfedale what it is today and we are rightly proud of our achievements. What- ever part we played, we did it together. We hope to experience more success in the Scouting year ahead.
