014 NIVIAKSIAK (NIVIAXIE) 1908 - 1959 Canadian Family Caribou Hunting skin stencil on paper

titled, dated 1959, inscribed "Skin stencil by Niviaksiak, printed by Iyola" and "Cape Dorset Baffin Island" beneath the mat and stamped with the Cape Dorset stamp, the printer's stamp and the artist's stamp and on verso inscribed "AA11" on a label 11 x 8 1/2 inches 27.9 x 21.6 centimeters

Provenance: Exhibited: Literature: When James Houston introduced printmaking to the Inuit people in Cape Dorset in 1957, the practice was enthusiastically embraced. The process of skin stencilling in particular was easily adapted from traditional Dorset appliqué methods. The inscription on this stencil indicates it is by well-known Cape Dorset artist Niviaksiak (Niviaxie), and that it was executed by Cape Dorset artist Iyola Kingwatsiak, who was considered an exceptional printmaker. It is intriguing that there is no edition number on the work - and it is possible it may have been a test print that was not developed into a print run by the print co-op. If so, this would be a rare image by the artist. The figures are similar to other Niviaksiak images in the first collection of Cape Dorset prints that were released in 1959. This collection was shown by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in 1960, and included 13 prints by Niviaksiak. Family Caribou Hunting is typical of Niviaksiak's work, which depicted wildlife and showed the activities of the community such as hunting or fishing. This strong print includes his characteristic use of blue ink in one figure, contrasted with other figures and animals in black. Starting Bid: $1,500 CDN Estimate: $3,000 ~ $4,000 CDN Preview at: Heffel Gallery Calgary
