Welcome to the convening of the 104th Ministers’ Conference and the 84th Choir Directors’ and Organists’ Guild Workshop. As always, it is my honor, pleasure and privilege to serve the Body of Christ, the Kingdom of God, and the great ecclesial community of preachers, psalmists, ministers and musicians for such a time as this.

Thank you for your continued support and attendance. The University is preparing for your arrival, and it will be wonderful to welcome you, once again, to our Home-by- the-Sea! Full Gospel Founder BISHOP PAUL S. MORTON, SR. was born in Windsor Ontario, Canada but was destined to move to the . In 1972, he moved to New Orleans, Louisiana and became the Senior Pastor of the Greater Saint Stephen Baptist Church. He served faithfully there for thirty-three years. Under his leadership, the church became a “Full Gospel” Baptist Church, expanding to three areas of the city, maximizing at seven services per Sunday. However, after the devastating storm, Katrina, God re-positioned him. At God’s command, he passed the mantle to his wife, Debra B. Morton, who now serves as Senior Pastor of the mother church in New Orleans. Bishop Morton now serves as Senior Pastor of the “baby” church, G.S.S. Changing a Generation, in Atlanta, which was birthed out of the mother church. Bishop Paul S. Morton, Sr. is the founding Presiding Bishop of one of the fastest growing movements in America – The Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship International. As an apostle, he has birthed many churches out of Greater Saint Stephen, New Orleans. Bishop Morton is also an international television preacher who, for over twenty-five years, reaches thousands of souls for the Lord on a weekly basis. Morton is also a gifted author and an anointed singer, having received many Stellar Awards. His life in Christ is evidenced by his love and compassion for his family, the brethren and those who are lost. Many esteem him as a Pastor’s Pastor; a Leader’s Leader; His wife and children revere him as a loving husband and role model father. Bishop Paul S. Morton, Sr. strives to exemplify the heart of God.

THE REVEREND DR. PHILLIP L. POINTER, SR. is the Senior Pastor of the St. Mark Baptist Church in Little Rock, Arkansas where he has served as a Senior Pastor for the last 10 years. Dr. Pointer served as the Senior Pastor of St. John Baptist Church in Alexandria, VA where in 2005, he led the merger between St. John Baptist Church and Providence Baptist Church, forming the Providence St. John Baptist Church. Dr. Pointer earned a Master of Divinity Degree with honors from The Samuel Dewitt Proctor School of at Union University in Richmond, Virginia and he received his Doctor of Ministry from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, OH, December 2014. His emphasis in doctoral study was “Preaching Prophetically in a Postmodern Culture: Communicating with Contemporary Audiences”. Dr. Pointer is the fourth generation in his family to serve as a Baptist pastor. He is firmly devoted to his family and seeks to model a commitment to family first. Pastor Pointer has a strong passion for leadership development and personal discipleship. He also has a great desire to empower people to both live as God intends and to serve God to their highest capacity. He seeks to accomplish this through meaningful worship and clear teaching Dr. Pointer resides with his wife Keya and their three children: Gabriela, Phillip, Jr., and Elijah.

THE REVEREND DR. WAYNE E. CROFT SR., serves as the Pastor of the St. Paul’s Baptist Church in West Chester, PA. Prior to this assignment, he served The Church of the Redeemer Baptist in for a total of 20 years. He also serves as The Jeremiah A. Wright, Sr. Associate Professor of Homiletics and Liturgics in African American Studies at United Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. Dr. Croft is a life member of Fraternity, Inc., NAACP, as well as President of the NAACP West Chester Branch. He is also a prolific writer. The African American Pulpit Journal published his sermons; The Promise Guaranteed, A Candidate for the Hall of Faith and his article entitled What Does it Mean to Preach Biblically Today. He is the author of the book Unexpected Calls to Unexpected Places, My Journey to St. Paul’s, Pretty Poison: Seven Deadly Sins and The Motif of Hope in African American Preaching During Slavery and Post- Civil War: There’s A Bright Side Somewhere. He has published articles in the Past Master section of Preaching Magazine; “John Jasper: Preaching with Authority”, “E. K. Bailey: Expositor of the Word” and “Gardner C. Taylor: Poet Laureate and Dean of Preachers.” Dr. Croft graduated Magna Cum Laude from Trinity College earning a Bachelor of Arts, Master of Divinity from Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary (now Palmer Theological Seminary), Master of Theology from Princeton Theological Seminary and graduated with distinction from Drew University earning a Doctor of Ministry, Master of Philosophy and a Doctor of Philosophy. Dr. Croft is married to Dr. Lisa Croft, a family physician. They have three children, Darlene, an attorney, Wayne Jr., a recent graduate of , Candace Nicole a senior at and a granddaughter Patterson.

THE REVEREND DR. JAMES H. HARRIS is the Distinguished Professor and Chair of Preaching and Pastoral Theology at the School of Theology, Virginia Union University and pastor of Second Baptist Church (West End) both in Richmond, VA. He is one of ten children born to Richard and Carrie Anna Harris in Chesterfield County, Virginia. He has a passion for teaching, preaching, and helping the poor and the oppressed. Dr. Harris works hard to make sure that the young people in his Church and community finish high school and attend college or trade school. He is a former President of the North American Academy of Homiletics and the Urban Coalition for Social Change. At age 23, he earned the Master of Divinity degree from the School of Theology, Virginia Union University and that same year became Pastor of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Norfolk, VA. Dr. Harris has taught preaching at the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education, the American Baptist Churches of the South, and for local churches and pastors. He has been a visiting professor of Homiletics at Princeton Theological Seminary, Princeton, NJ, Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN, and in the ACTS Doctor of Ministry in Preaching Program at McCormick Theological Seminary in , IL. He is the author of several books, including No Longer Bound: A Theology of Reading and Preaching (Cascade Books, 2013), The Forbidden Word (Cascade Books, 2012), The Word Made Plain: The Power and Promise of Preaching (Fortress Press, 2004), Preaching Liberation (Fortress Press, 1996), and Pastoral Theology: A Perspective (Fortress Press, 1991). THE REVEREND KIM Y. NEAL is a native of Brooklyn, where she received her formative academic preparation. Her faith journey began with an early acknowledgement of her calling to preach and she has served in a full range of congregational leadership as a senior pastor, executive pastor, associate pastor and associate minister in her 35 years of servant leadership. Her calling and commitment to preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ has fueled her gifts as a national evangelist, author and activist, worship leader and worshipper. Rev. Kim’s multi-disciplined education has provided a broad theological landscape for impactful and insightful interpretation of Scripture. Reverend Kim is a subscriber of being a lifetime learner and describes her education as the anchor in the turbulent waters of contemporary culture and contextual ethics. She is a graduate of City College of the City University of the City of New York. She is also a graduate of the dual degree program at Union Theological Seminary in conjunction with Columbia University School of Social Work. Her continuing education led her to American Academy McAllister Institute, also in New York City, where she graduated with a degree in Mortuary Science. Reverend Kim considers her highest achievement to be the parent of a teenage daughter, Stephanie Nicole. They currently live in Newark, DE. Her life leading Scripture is “...what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?” - Micah 6:8.

THE REVEREND DR. NEICHELLE R. GUIDRY is a spiritual daughter of New Creation Christian Fellowship of San Antonio, , where the Bishop David Michael Copeland and the Rev. Dr. Claudette Anderson Copeland are her pastors and where she was ordained to ministry in 2010. She is a graduate of (2007, BA, Lambda Pi Eta) and Yale Divinity School (2010, M.Div.), where she was the 2010 recipient of the Walcott Prize for Clear and Effective Public and Pulpit Speaking. She is also a graduate of Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary (2017), where she completed her Doctor of Philosophy in the area of Liturgical Studies with a concentration in Homiletics. Her dissertation is entitled, “Towards a Womanist Homiletical Theology for Subverting Rape Culture.” She is the creator of she preaches, a virtual community and professional development organization that aspires to uplift African-American millennial women in ministry through theological reflection, fellowship, and liturgical curation. For six years, she served as the Associate Pastor to Young Adults and the Liaison to Worship and Arts Ministries in the Office of the Senior Pastor at Trinity on the South side of Chicago, where the Rev. Dr. Otis Moss, III is the Senior Pastor. She served as the 2016 Preacher/Pastor-In-Residence at the and Leadership Institute at Princeton Theological Seminary. She was listed as one of “12 New Faces of Black Leadership” in TIME Magazine (January 2015). She was recognized for “quickly becoming one of her generation’s most powerful female faith leaders” on Ebony Magazine’s 2015 Power 100 list (December 2015), and one of “Ten Women of Faith Leading the Charge Ahead” by Sojourners. 2018 HUMC MAIN STAGE PRESENTERS

REV. JOE B. FLEMING, SR. was born in Holdenville, Oklahoma. He is a graduate of , , Texas, and the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology, Richmond, Virginia. Additionally, he continued his preparation for service to the Lord at United Seminary, Dayton, Ohio, and at the School of Religion at Boston University. For more than forty years, Pastor Fleming has served as a consultant/trainer for churches, agencies, corporations, and conventions both in the continental United States and abroad. He has also served as a board member and officer of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. and instructor for ICAM (Interdenominational Center for Administrative Ministry) in Atlanta, Georgia. During his tenure in Richmond, Virginia, as the pastor of the Quioccasin Baptist Church, Pastor Fleming served as Director of a Community Organization, Director of Training and Planning for a multi-million dollar social agency for twelve years. In addition, he was President of the Henrico Branch, NAACP and the Baptist Ministers’ Conference of Richmond and vicinity. Since having come to Portsmouth to serve as pastor of the Third Baptist Church in 1981, Pastor Fleming has served as President of the Tidewater Metro Baptist Ministers’ Conference of Virginia; President of the Portsmouth Branch of the NAACP; Founding Member and Past President for the Martin Luther King Leadership Steering Committee of Portsmouth to name a few of his affiliations. Dr. Fleming was recently chosen to receive one of the 2011 Humanitarian Awards for given by the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities, was honored by the Tidewater Metro Baptist Ministers’ Conference as “Pastor of the Year,”.
