DETAILS OF MINING PROCESS

General Topography :

The whole area is barren waste land with few patches of agricultural land .

Regional Geology :

Kota stone is a flaggy limestone which belongs to SEMRI series of lower VINDHYANS. Ii occurs

over an estimated area of 55 Sq.Km. covering Tehsil, Ramganjmandi/Chechat in distt. Kota. It is

overland alternatively with shales and sand stone.

It is very silent deposit. It is naturally spittable and on splitting yield compact slabs/tiles

which takes egg finished glossy finish. Mining and Exploration :

Mining operation in leased area in next five years of 10 hectare of land will be depleted. There is

no human settlement in the lease area. Mineral Reserves : 35.94 Lakh M.T

Proposed method of mining :

Stacking of mineral & Waste:

In the mining of Kotah stone, the depth of Overburden is increasing about 8-15 % in depending on the amount of dip of the rocks. It consists of soil, subsoil and non-splittable incompetent beds of limestone. Cutting wastage from extraction of Kotah stone is taken along with other solid waste.

Stacking:

Overburden of waste will be dumped and stacked in such a way that proper benches will be prepared to avoid any risk of failure. Overburden will be stacked in such a manner that natural drainage pattern will not be disturbed and drainage pattern will not be disturbed.

Stabilization of Dumps :

Dumps will be compacted and made stable with the continuous plying of heavy dumpers.

Maximum height of the dumps will be upto 10 mtr. Proposed dump sites by backfilling of voids will also not disturb the natural landscape and drainage system.

4 Post mining land Use :

Mined out area will be backfilled and plantation will be continued as on today on reclaimed dumps of overburden. A few big pits will be utilized as water reservoir.

EXISTING ENVIRONMENTAL SCENARIO

Climate of the area :

Mine lease hold area is having tropical climate with monsoon period ranging from July to

September. Average rainfall in the area is 85 cm with months July and August having maximum rainfall. Maximum temperature recorded in the area is 46°C and minimum about 7 °C. Flora & Fauna :

There is n o endangered Flora or Fauna was sited, as the whole area is barren, waste land. Natural Drainage: Lease hold area is leveled and gently sloping. Natural water flow is from West to East.

Rain water flowing down West to east is controlled by garland drains running north –south and ultimately discharges into a natural drainage.

Water from the rainfall during monsoon within the working catchment gets filled up into quarries and is used after the rainy season for different purposes like coolant for cutting of Kotah stone, plantation, drinking, forestry on waste dumps and virgin waste land to be excavated in future and also being diverted to nearby agricultural lands, ponds and wells. Water quality is potable and no pollution is sited.

Water and its quality :

Ground Water: There is no usage of underground water since the water demand is met by the rainwater being stored in quarries. Water table in the area is not less than 130 mtrs below general ground level. Extent of mining activities is upto the depth of 27-40 m below the ground level, which is much above water table. As such, the mining activity will not disturb or pollute the quality of ground water.

5 Ambient Air quality : Water in ample amounts is being utilized for the sizing of Kotah stone layers in-situ, so there is no pollution of the air. However, drilling within overburden and use of Heavy Earth Moving

Machinery may degrade air environment. For this regular sprinkling of water on the haulage road with wet drilling is being practiced. Ambient noise :

Noise limits in the vicinity of Jhiri machine, Splitting machine, HEMM, DG operations are within permissible limits and frequencies, ranging from 78.4 dB to 85 dB. It is proposed that PPE’s will be provided to the operators working nearby drilling and dozers since noise values were recorded a little higher in these areas. Population around the lease area :

S. no. Name of village Population 1. Hatyakhedi 1100 2. Badodiya 700 3. Kawarpura 800 4. Khedali 1200 5. Gudala Kawapura 1000 6. Modak village 4000 7. Taleda Khurd 750 8. Banda 700 9. Manda 700

Soil cover : In the entire the mining lease area, most of the land is rocky but part of the area is covered with black cotton soil. Depth ranges from 0.1m to 1.5 m. during mining activities, top soil wherever available, will be excavated separately and transferred directed to waste dumps prepared for its application. It ahs been observed that direct utilization of top soil over the dumps has increased the growth rate of plants.

Existing Plantation: Waste dump is being systematically afforested. Plantation will be carried out on dump sites.

6 Future Proposal: we propose to plant trees on virgin land lying ahead of working area till it is acquired for mining. Rain water from quarries will be diverted to these areas through pipeline or channels fro nursing these plants. Area will be fenced off with stone wall to avoid grazing. It is planned that 5,000 plants will be planted on waste dumps and waste land during rainy season every season during the next 5 years.

Assessment regarding POLLUTION CONTROL:

a) Aesthetic Environment : extensive plantation has been carried out over the dumps

and the remaining virgin land systematically.

b) Soil: Conservation of soil and sub-soil is being done by capping it on the waste

dumps directly for raising plantation. It is also being stored separately for subsequent use.

c) Ambient Air environment : since water is being extensively used in sizing Kotah

Stone layers, there is almost no pollution of air. However, drilling and use of HEMM

do degrade the ambient environment. For this, wet drilling and sprinkling of water on

haulage road is being practiced .

d) Noise Environment : PPE’s have been provided to the mine workers employed near

Jhiri machines and DG sets.

e) Surface water : there will be no change in water quality as rainwater gets filled in the

pits & quarries is being utilized for all purposes during the whole year.

f) Ground water : there is no extraction or utilization of ground water. In fact the water

in pits and quarries help in recharging the ground water table of the area.

g) Vibration levels : Company is using a very safe technique of non-ELEC explosives

which controls ground vibrations and almost no flying.

h) Plantations: it is planned that 2000 saplings will be nurtured on waste dumps and

waste land during rainy season every year for next five years.

7 Facilities to mine workers i) Sufficient wages : company has categorized workers and has wage structure as per their

working as above ground and below ground. Besides this, company workers also enjoy the

benefits of bonus, provident fund, gratuity and female workers maternity and other benefits.

Majority of workers are local residents. Because of high wage structure and benefits,

company maintains a very peaceful, harmonious and industrial relations and no unpleasant

incidents like strike is reported since 1989. ii) Canteen: canteen is being run for the benefit of workers. Tea & snacks are served at

concessional prices. iii) Rest shelters, toilets, and crèches : company has provided these facilities separately for

male and females. iv) Medical facilities: company runs dispensaries fro first aid at mine site for employees and

local habitants. Four Ambulances for speedy transportation of sick or injured persons are
