Veiledere: Ole Jacob Madsen (hovedveileder), Peder Kjøs (ekstern biveileder) Problemstilling/forskningsspørsmål: Hva kan bronies fortelle oss om å være ung mann i dagens samfunn, sett i lys av en diskurs om at menn er i en kollektiv krise? Bakgrunn: Bronies er unge voksne menn som digger animasjonsserien My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic [MLP:FiM]. Bronyfenomenet har blitt møtt med både fascinasjon og sterk skepsis. Noen har tolket bronies som nok et tegn på maskulinitetens undergang (Gilbert, 2015). Ideen om en ”maskulinitetskrise” er ikke ny, og kan bestrides gitt menns fremskutte posisjon i samfunnet. Diskursen rundt krisen vil uansett påvirke hvordan vi tenker om menn og maskulinitet (Whitehead, 2002). Det synes derfor spennende og interessant å ta utgangspunkt i denne diskursen for å sette bronies inn i en større sammenheng. Mye inspirasjon er hentet fra boken Man dis(connected): How technology has sabotaged what it means to be male, av Zimbardo og Coulombe (2015). De tenker seg at unge menn i dag er akterutseilt fordi de ikke klarer å leve opp til endrede forventninger til mannen, og flykter inn i en virtuell verden som konsekvens. Studiens formål er å undersøke hva bronies kan tilføre diskursen rundt maskulinitetskrisen, særlig med tanke på å belyse hvilke forventninger som stilles til unge menn i dag. Metode: Det ble benyttet semistrukturerte, kvalitative forskningsintervjuer for å intervjue fem mannlige fans av MLP:FiM (16-25 år). Intervjuene ble analysert ved bruk av tematisk analyse. Resultater: Det ble konstruert tre hovedtemaer på grunnlag av den tematiske analysen: a) Bronienes beskrivelser av hvorfor de begynte og fortsatte å se på serien, b) Beskrivelser av mulighetene som ligger i å se på serien og være med i fandomet, c) Hvordan det er å være synlig som brony, opplevelse av stigma, og opprør mot kjønnsbaserte forventninger. Konklusjon: Studien belyser hvordan MLP:FiM og bronyfandomet ser ut til å spille en viktig funksjon i flere av bronienes liv. Samtidig opplever de at de ikke kan være åpne om interessen sin til alle, i frykt for sanksjoner. Slike sanksjoner vitner om strenge regler for hvordan unge menn skal være, og gir inntrykk av at hegemonisk maskulinitet fremdeles fremmer en avvisning av det feminine. Å like små rosa, ponnier, slik broniene gjør, utgjør tilsynelatende et så grundig forventningsbrudd, at de risikerer å bli fullstendig avvist som en V konsekvens. Broniene mister dermed mulighet for å påvirke samfunnets forståelse av menn og maskulinitet. Verdiene om aksept og toleranse som i stor grad preger bronyfandomet, ser ikke ut til å prege samfunnet utenfor. Veien kan synes lang til en verden der unge menn kan like pastellfargede ponnier uten frykt for sanksjoner.     Machiavelli’s Little Pony: The Prince and Princess Celestia’s Reign By Wilbur Turuvuski Glossary of terms, concepts and important aspects of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic: Warning: The following essay contains spoilers for the first four seasons of Friendship is Magic Fridge Logic: o A phrase referring to the act of drawing conclusions based on actions or events in a show/film/book/what have you. It is important to note that this can lead to alternate interpretations of characters and events, and that it can never be considered fully accurate or representational of the character or event, as the audience may be missing information or context. Additionally, there can be considered two subsets of fridge logic: fridge brilliance and fridge horror. Fridge brilliance is essentially fridge logic that seems to add to the intelligence of an action/character or the world of the story. Fridge horror is a kind of fridge logic where the conclusion seems to indicate horrific things about the world/characters/actions of the show/film/book/what have you. o Examples: . In the episode ―It‘s About Time‖ we learn that a three-headed dog named Cerberus keeps ancient, evil, creatures imprisoned in a place called Tartarus. She expresses concern over his presence in Ponyville instead of Tartarus, stating that the ancient evils could escape in his absence before her friend Fluttershy is able to soothe the creature. Based on the information we are given above, one could use fridge logic to infer that Fluttershy could, if she so wished, conceivably release the ancient evils by soothing Cerberus while the evils escaped.

    1 “Little girls and the things that they love”: My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, Audience, Identity, and the Privilege of Contemporary Fan Culture Ewan Kirkland Abstract: The recent generation of My Little Pony has received popular and academic attention due to its visible following of young male enthusiasts. This article explores the so- called Brony phenomenon in terms of gender and age, cult spectator practices, fandom, masculinities, and the kinds of participatory culture with which the new series is associated. Despite the apparent transgression of men enjoying a television show clearly coded as being for young girls, the article argues that Brony practices reproduce many male-centered aspects of fan media consumption in a manner that recuperates the femininity of the brand according to masculine values and cultures. The femininity of the thirty-year-old series is placed in historical and theoretical context, illustrating parallels between current and earlier incarnations of the franchise and its continuities with other women-centered popular media. Particularly significant here is the program’s emphasis on female friendship. Yet such “gynocentric” qualities and the series’ affinity with young viewers might have been eroded in recent episodes. This is partly through the incorporation of more masculine genres, but also in the increasing address of the show to its online fandom, an audience employing channels of expression from which young people are effectively excluded. These developments function to marginalize the series’ core audience—“little girls”—in a process of appropriation and redefinition that ultimately serves the interests of a more visible and powerful demographic. Abstract When Hermann Gunkel first put forward the idea of Chaoskampf he concentrated on how a struggle between a god and chaos results in creation. Subsequent scholars, such as Rebecca Watson, too have viewed the motif’s theme as being about creation. This study uses texts from the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, Babylon, Mari, and Ugarit to show that kingship is a major theme in Chaoskampf texts. This study dismantles the current approach to Chaoskampf showing that it is an evolving, and changing motif used throughout the Ancient Near East to validate kingship.
