Jessica Mendoza Position(S) Name: Jessica Mendoza Position(s): Outfield College/University played for? Stanford University Current Club/Pro Tea: NPF Florida Pride and USA Softball Employment: President, Women's Sports Foundation; Lead Colour Analyst, ESPN What’s your favourite TV show? Dexter What’s your favourite food? Sushi What ‘s your favourite food after a tough game? Sushi What’s your favourite website? www.jmendoza.com of course! And then www.WomensSportsFoundation.org I see on your website ( www.jmendoza.com/ ) New Zealand is your favourite holiday vacation, why is that? I spent three weeks of my honeymoon there and we both did not want to come home. Out of all of the places I have travelled, it is the closest to epitomizing nature at its absolute best. The people we met were like family overnight, and the food was great too!! May be a kiwi sooner that you think ☺ Greatest and most unforgettable moment in Softball? Hitting the game-winning homerun at the World Championships in 2006 in Beijing, China, and hitting a home run my very first at bat back (two weeks ago) after having a baby 4 months before. Why is Softball special to Jessica? It is the place where I first learned I could really be myself, loving every moment and mostly importantly, giving me the confidence to be the person I am today, to choose a better path than many of those peers around me. Softball has taken me from just playing a game to now being an ambassador for young girls everywhere Do you have any pregame rituals and if so what? I like to take a 15 minute nap right before we leave! Who is the one person that has influenced your Softball career the most and why? My parents. My father instilled into me to be humble, knowing that there is always a way to get better, as an athlete, as a student and most importantly, as a person. What is your vision for world Softball in 2020? I want to see the IOC see this sport as something that embodies the Olympics: a sport that brings people together, countries together, and provides a place where those of any shape, colour and size can play. What’s the best piece of advice anyone has given you in regards to playing Softball? "Practice like you are the worst player on the field, Play like you are the best" .

  • About Jessica Mendoza on June 16, 2015, Jessica Made History When She Became the First Female to Sit in the Booth As Part of ESPN’S College World Series Coverage
About Jessica Mendoza On June 16, 2015, Jessica made history when she became the first female to sit in the booth as part of ESPN’s College World Series coverage. On August 24th, she became the first woman to work as an Analyst for ESPN’s MLB coverage on the net’s Cardinals- Diamondbacks broadcast. That same week, Jessica was in the booth when Jake Arrieta of the Cubs pitched a no-hitter against the Dodgers during her Sunday Night Baseball debut. Everything culminated on October 6th when Jessica was in the booth for the 2015 American League Wild Card Game, becoming the first female Analyst in MLB postseason history. Before she was making history covering baseball, Jessica was having a similar impact on the softball diamond. Jessica’s softball accomplishments are almost too vast to comprehend: After an incredible career at Stanford where she was a four-time First-Team All-American Outfielder and led the Cardinal to their first ever Women’s College World Series Appearance (she still holds 5 Stanford school records, including batting average & career home runs), Jessica became a member of the U.S. Women’s National Team. From 2001-10, she won both a Gold (Athens, 2004) and Silver (Beijing, 2008) Medal, in addition to being a three-time World Champion (2002, 2006, 2010) and World Cup Champion (2006, 2007, 2010). In 2006, she was named the USA Softball Athlete of the Year and was also recognized in 2008 with the prestigious honor of being named Women’s Sports Foundation Sportswoman of the Year.

  • 1 Darren Zaslau Independent Major Honors Project
Darren Zaslau Independent Major Honors Project Race, Ethnicity and the Legacy of Baseball in the Americas ADVISORS: Daphne John and Jay Ashby Baseball is America’s Pastime. When looKing at its history in our modern day, it is difficult to imagine the racism and hate, which will always remain implanted in the roots of the game. From the Negro Leagues of 1920, to the racism surrounding Roberto Clemente, Hispanic players, and other racial minorities, the struggles of the past will never be forgotten. Although its history was filled with periods of adversity, the current inclusive state that baseball currently presents is truly remarKable. Analyzing these positive trends toward racial inclusion overtime will be the main focus of this independent major honors research project. In addition, understanding where the sport has come from, its current state, and attempting to predict the future will be extremely important aspects for deeper analysis. Individual baseball icons that opened the door for the current racial minority participants such as JacKie Robinson, Roberto Clemente, and Masanori MuraKami will all be discussed in order to understand baseball’s true pastime. Current events including the World Baseball Classic, the Little League World Series dominance of Asian teams, and the 2016 Tampa Bay Rays trip to Cuba are other areas of investigation to show how the culture has changed in the 20th century. Finally, this project will predict the future of baseball to fully process the impacts that these athletes and Key events have had on the sport. As a result of the increased racial inclusion over time, will racism in baseball decrease? Will coaching staffs be primarily composed of racial minorities so they that they will be able to relate and communicate with their players? Will Major League Baseball (MLB) expand to other 1 countries other than the United States and Canada? With the way the sport is progressing in our modern day society, the possibilities are endless.
