STARSTRUCK Co 2019

Last year, Kirsten Dickason was appointed to Hunter River High School as the Dance Teacher. Dance is taught as an Elective from Year 8 through to Year 12. Kirsten has brought with her a wealth of experience, including holding positions within the HSC Callback Committee and School Spectacular, both based in Sydney.

Kirsten is to be congratulated on her current position as Creative Director of Star Struck 2019. This year's theme is "No Limits" and Kirsten is working with a group of hand-picked students to perform in the show, held at Newcastle Entertainment Centre from the 14- 15 June.

Star Struck provides performance and learning opportunities for students and fosters an appreciation of the performing arts. The program brings together stu- dents from very small primary schools to large comprehensive high schools. Our students, at Hunter River High School, have the opportunity to participate as part of both a mass dance ensemble and in smaller items. We are very fortunate to have Kirsten at our school and wish her all the best in preparing for the upcoming show.

STEAM Co QUEST Youth Express - Karuah STEAM Quest Eight students spent the day at Karuah Public School, Tuesday March 12. An initiative of Youth Express-STEAM Shack, students attending participated in workshops covering robotics and coding, mini drones and virtual reality art.

Kiesha Baira of Year 8 commented “It was fun. I have never flown a drone before. It was cool to fly a drone”. The drone session certainly proved a hit with our students. “In general it was heaps fun. It was fun to use team work. I liked the drones and the virtual reality” said Jacob Avery of Year 7. Fellow Year 7 student Kye Jenkins was an enthusiastic participant throughout the Karuah STEAM Quest - “It was good. It was fun in a group and coop- erating. I liked the drones, the virtual reality - I liked all of it”.

Angel Hodson of Year 8 engaged with the virtual reality to create Aboriginal Cultural art and symbols during the opportunity she was provided. “It was challenging to try and create Aboriginal stories and symbols” said Angel. “It was a bit weird to create art when you didn’t know where you were in the room. It was a really good day”.

The value of the Karuah STEAM Quest is reflected in some graphs of student responses following the 2019 event. In the words of Xanthiah Roach of Year 7 - “It was good to interact with technology and get a better education using technology. I reckon I would like to be a coding teacher in Tech Mandatory in the future”. Russell Blatchford (Cultural Room Coordinator)
