3 FOREWORD

onceptualized for the empowerment of women, Providence Women’s College, the first higher educa- tion centre for women in Malabar, was established by the Apostolic Carmel congregation in 1952. It Cwas affiliated to the University of Calicut in 1968, recognized by the UGC in 1972 accredited by NAAC in 2004 with B++ and re-accredited by NAAC in 2011 with A grade(CGPA- 3.11). The college continues to espouse the initial vision of its founders to actualize the holistic development of the individual based on ethical, intellectual and academic excellence to form responsible citizens who can constructively participate in the transformation of the world. The curricular, extra-curricular and extension activities of the college have been designed in keeping with the vision of the college – the em- powerment and holistic development of women. The new members of students and faculty are given an orientation during which they are sensitized on all the social commitment of the college. Every year around 200 students submit application to become NSS volunteers and 100 students are selected. The two units of the college have a membership of more than 200 volunteers each year. The task undertaken by the volunteers in the campus and outside the campus are well appreciated and accepted. The unit has reached a long way and it is exploring in many of the social activities. The programme officer and the volunteers are in search of inventive ideas and implementing them at the earliest. Residential seven camps, nature camps, Seminars, leadership training programmmes, quiz competi- tion, medical camps, removal of plastic waste and creating an awareness on creating a plastic free zone to prevent environmental hazards, planting sapling, environmental protection and energy conservations initiatives are some of the regular activities. They observe special days of local, national and international importance with suitable programmes like public awareness rallies, mob flash, street play , cleanliness drive etc. They also undertook Soil Health restoration programme, Adoption of Kuthiravattom Mental health center for sparkling drive, anti drug kalajada, introduction of proper waste management system within the campus and in public places like Kuthiravattam, Collectorate and adopted village,. Organ donation- hair donation and social economic survey in Santhinagar colony Most of the members of the college union, association secretaries and class representatives are NSS volunteers. And they proved the richness of the training they had from NSS by organising a number of activities with a variety. The programme officer Dr.R.Sini is a authentic foundation of motivation. She has a passion for social service activities. She has been a driving force for students to be enthusiastic and creative as NSS volun- teers. Her valuable suggestions and guidance have brought laurels to the unit in the form of many awards and appreciations. The volunteers also got many opportunities even in state level and national level, un- der her leadership. Her previous experience as NSS volunteer is really a positive feature to her in these activities. Most of the activities of the unit are innovative in her own way. She presents all the activities in a very articulated way and it is always appreciated. I am very much glad to say that she is very passionate, well projected and active in all fields of activities in the college. I wish all the success to the programme officer and volunteers in their future activities.

5 SELF-APPRAISAL

he NSS unit No: of Providence Women’s College is one of the vibrant units under University of Cali- cut. The unit was piloted by a couple of dynamic programme officers. Being an ex-volunteer of NSS Tduring my college days, I voluntarily took the responsibility as a Programme Officer and I enjoy the role by all means.

Being a master degree holder in Physics I was searching for the areas where the manpower of the volunteers can be utilized in an effective manner. The message to conserve electricity was conveyed by the introduction of a project entitled “Energy Conservation” among students and bagged II prize in State level competition. The energy conservation projects through LED bulb- making immensely helped in the conservation of energy and its minimized usage.

I have provided many training programmes in ‘LED bulb making’ as a part of energy conservation programme in the college, higher secondary and high school level and have also taken up many aware- ness classes at various residence associations, NSS unit in different colleges, Calicut.

A proper waste system management was introduced in the college during my period of service with participation of student volunteers. Further activities under waste management were spread to the near- by residence associations, Kozhikode collectorate, Kuthiravattom MCH, Kozhikode etc., which enabled the volunteers in identifying the needs and problems of the community and finding a solution to the problems. The implementation of proper waste management system in the adopted community was a great success and this initiation motivated the volunteers to understand themselves in relation to their community.

The next question raised was with regard to the literacy status of patients who have been discharged from Kuthiravattom mental hospital. The answer from the volunteers was an emphatic YES: “We are here to train them.” In the adopted community at ‘Kuthiravattom’ the volunteers imparted literacy training programme and it was a situation where they were made to utilize their knowledge in finding practical solution to the individual problem of that community .

Then and there came many situations where the NSS volunteers showed their sense of responsibility and the capacity to meet emergencies by taking active roles in natural disasters at Pulluranpara land- slide , Uttarakhand and Kashmir flood through raising money, collecting clothes and other necessary materials.

To donate and save others’ life is one of the greatest endeavors in one’s life. When such an idea was put forward 56 of the volunteers and myself gave the consent for donating organs after death. Though there is no permanent solution to prevent cancer there could be many therapies to keep the patients happy and keep a smile on their face. This thought encouraged me and 20 of our volunteers to donate hair to make wigs for cancer patients.

I believe the willingness of the volunteers to do a survey in Santhinagar colony, which was an isolated area, is surely a leadership quality made possible through various training programmes. Socio-economic health survey conducted by our volunteers in Santhinagar colony helped our volunteers interact with the people having many life experience. This imparted a sense of apathy among the students towards the underprivileged people.

Home is a dream of all human being. But the skyrocketing prices of materials and their unavailability prevent common people from fulfilling their home. It is in this context that our unit came forward with a project “Home for Homeless” aiming to build home for homeless.

6 Malayalam is our mother tongue. But unfortunately we are ignoring its rich culture and heritage. The state government has declared 2013 as official language year to promote Malayalam. We also started a promotion activity by releasing Malayalam Manuscript magazine. This year, famous Malayalam poem ‘Kurathi’ was enacted by 45 NSS volunteers as part of Malayalam language day celebration.

Most of the students were unaware of the need for blood donation. We changed that through continu- ous awareness campaigns. More than 1100 units of blood have been supplied in the last two years.

In order to reduce the use of usage of vegetables with chemicals we introduced family farming system and also a vegetable garden in the campus. The idea of newspaper quiz and news bulletin in the campus was aimed at enriching students with information and knowledge.

Even after their days with the NSS, students continued to engage in many of social services. Some of the volunteers even switched their branch of studies to social science, gaining admission in TIS (Tata institute Social Science) for their higher studies. Such attitude change of students towards social service is the real award for a programme officer.

All these activities initiated by me were carried out under the guidance of unit advisory board. I be- lieve I had carried out all my duties and responsibilities as programme officer with utmost integrity and sincerity, inspiring volunteers in various areas. I am aware that a lot of improvements are to be made.

8 We say NO to PLASTIC

Appreciation form The Green Core Community

his was a year in which a lot of thoughts and discussions were done for the safe disposal of waste. Waste and its safe disposal is the major issue of Tthe contemporary society. So to understand how when and where domestic waste is disposed, NSS unit decided to conduct a survey. It was then we came to know that the Satan of all waste is the PLASTIC. Hence including teaching, non-teaching staffs and students, we initiated a plastic waste disposal plan. A schedule was charted out for the collection of plastic waste from the college (June 1st, August 15th, October 2nd, second week of December and March 30th). All the faculty and students of the college were asked to bring the plastic waste at home and nearby. They were collected and sent to recycling unit. In the first year itself we collected 5 quintal of plastic waste. Majority of the plas- tic waste were plastic covers. The amount got by selling the plastic was given to the truck. Hence we proudly say that the plastic waste disposal is a zero budget execution. This project is continuing for the last two years.

For initiating such a wonderful endeavor even before the government could think about it, the green core community appreciated our NSS unit. This project was further expanded to nearby residential areas. Recognizing our effort and success, various resident associations, other colleges and com- munities approached our college NSS unit for guidance and awareness classes

9 GUIDING THROUGH THE WORLD OF LETTERS AT KUTHIRAVATTOM MENTAL HOSPITAL

iteracy mission at Kuthiravattom Mental Hospital was productive and suc- cessful. It gave us pain after realizing the circumstances of those people Lwho lived with mental disability in this centre, where their living condition where very poor, with dirty atmosphere. It was terrifying to see their condi- tion when we reached there to extend our hands to help. We took the responsibility of not only cleaning the hospital premises and clearing all the plastic waste but also educating the mentally retarded inmates there. From the beginning of the academic year, every Saturday and Sunday, the students of our NSS unit spend their morning with the inmates, educating them, and also being educated in different means. We continued the literacy classes for one whole year and now we proudly say that 30 of the inmates is able to read, write and understand Malayalam and some English. We remember whole heated support of the literacy mission with gratitude. It is a proud moment for the life of NSS volunteers being able to lend a hand of support to the inmate. The presence of the volunteers created mental relief, stress and strain environment to the inmates. This attitude always enhances enthusiasm n volunteers to do more to these lovable inmates.

10 Sparkling drive AT KUTHIRAVATTOM

olluting environment is kind of a disease. Complete cure for this cannot be done alone by awareness. It’s not the patients that dump waste at KUTH- PIRAVATTOM MENTAL HOSPITAL. It is the workers, the authority and the bystanders that do such things. NSS found a cure for this. We made the place pollution free by implementing a proper waste management system in this centre. It was also seen that a proper monitoring committee was formed and the NSS volunteers took the charge to monitor the cleaning committees at the centre and also a keen observation was made to look into the waste disposal methods. A proper segregation system was maintained by the NSS volunteers in the hospital for disposing different types of wastes. The Adoption of kuthiravattam mental health centre for sparkling drive was focused to facililitate a proper waste management system was success full in every aspect and was well appreciated by Hospital management for this pioneer activity.

11 TRANSFORMATION TO A BETTER TODAY

ur aim was to transform a village area into a self reliable one and we accomplished our aim through Nirav residence association. Even before Onatural farming attained global attention Providence Women’s College set forth in this venture. A ten day camp was organized in the memory of Rachel Carson. The camp was further extended for the awareness of energy conserva- tion classes, complete health cleanliness survey, five hectare organic farming, plastic disposal project, etc in those residences. For all these initiatives the NSS units supported Nirav Residence Association. The NSS unit became a model to the society for many of the initiative programs connected safe en- vironment Nirav was able to bring out our results in many of their ventures like waste management in the airport, railway station, IIM etc. Through the promotion of Organic farming by NSS volunteers added to gain surplus veg- etables and this was sold out through the outlets of Nirav and thus producing extra income. It was a proud moment for the NSS unit of Providence Women’s College to watch the transformation of our village to a self dependent one.

12 COLLECTORATE CLEANING DRIVE

eeping our surroundings clean is a part of our culture. This is the precise reason by Kwhich Providence Women’s College NSS unit held hand in hand with the workers of the Civ- il Station, the Calicut district governing head office. This was not only to clean the area, but also to polish our culture. Providence girls be- haved as a catalyst in the cleaning drive. Un- der the supervision of the honorable collector, 200 volunteers and 1000 government officers together cleaned the whole collectorate on March 7. This was sent to the plastic recycling unit. Later waste baskets for dumping plastic were placed in each office. Also, 5 lakh rupees were passed by the panchayat for the dispos- al of organic waste by building ring compost. Till now, this process is continued under the supervision of collector himself. The moni- toring and implementation committee of the Collectorate clean drive include NSS program officers of Providence Women’s College and 20 volunteers. The introduction of proper waste management system was a forge event in the history of collectorate, Kozhikode.

REHABILITATION THROUGH DISTRESS RELIEF FUND

1. Pulluranpara landslide disaster was an unexpect- ed event which struck Calicut district in 2012. For the rehabilitation of the people there, our college through the NSS collected 50000 rupees. Volun- teers visited the area and donation was handed over. 2. Uttarakhand flood: Even though Uttarakhand is a faraway place from us, being Indian and responsible citizen we couldn’t blind ourselves from seeing the pain of the people suffering from this calamity. We collected 22000 rupees from the college and send to the Prime Ministers dis- tress relief fund, along with 8 large bags of cloth material and blankets. 3. Kashmir flood: signature of our students reached Kashmir, through clothes and other materials af- ter Kashmir was hit by the unexpected flood.

13 Donate organ… save life

onating your organ to save others life is one of the greatest deed one can do before leaving earth. When such an idea was put forward 56 of the vol- Dunteers along with the program officers with the consent from parents signed in for donating their organs after death. The organ donation campaign was flagged off from our college by the honorable collector. Volunteers decided to propagate the awareness of organ donation and for this a rally was conducted which ended up in a flash mob.

Yes, we care…

eadly cancer has always been a factor which destroyed the happiness of many people. One of them is the aftereffect of chemotherapy, loss of hair. DWhat if we could bring smile to those beautiful people who lost their hair in the course of fighting cancer. This thought encouraged us and 20 of our volun- teers and program officers donated their hair to make others smile. These hair donated was to make wigs according to the likes of cancer patients.

14 ENERGY CONSERVATION FOR FUTURE GENERATION

ne of the major threats the world which is facing today is Energy crisis. The wastage of Energy may be due to lack of awareness or ignorance. OConsidering the consequences on the wastage of energy, the NSS volunteers decided to take some measures to conserve energy for the sake of a substantial development for the coming generation. The step toward this was on seminar was conducted on November 8th 2012 on energy conservation. Then the sec- ond step towards the agenda was to give awareness in the campus and com- munity to replace all the incandescent lamps placed in the bathroom with LED. All incandescent lamps were replaced with LED in the college. For this LED prepared by our volunteers were distributed. LED making workshops are conducted every year. NSS volunteers are equipped with making LED. Huge of electrical energy can be conserved by simply using LED. For our project, we were awarded second place in Mathrubhumi SEED with a cash award of 50000 rupees. Students of St Michael’s School approached us and we taught the plus two students how LED bulbs are made and they implemented this project in their school as well.

15 NATURAL FARMING- TOUCHING LAND AND MIND

griculture is both affected by climate change but also contributes to it. As a sector, agriculture must therefore both adapt to changes and offers Aoptions for mitigation ie reducing greenhouse gas emissions and store carbon. Agricultural land use contributes to 12% of global greenhouse gas emissions. This figure is rising. As demand for food increases, farmers are clearing new land resulting in deforestation, tilling of pasture and soil degradation. This ac- tivity opens carbon sinks and so releases greenhouse gases. Agriculture must also adapt to changes in climate in order to provide food security. Rising tem- peratures and decreasing water availability are reducing yields particularly in developing countries where agriculture is vital for the food security of these populations. Extreme weather events such as droughts and floods are making cropping and animal production even more prone to failure. The objective of our project was to explore the mitigation and adaptation potential of natural farming. It examines natural farming’s performance on greenhouse gas emis- sions and carbon sequestration. With respect to adaptation, the study discuss- es how organic farming systems utilize traditional skills and knowledge, man- ages with weather extremes, and enhances productivity and resilience. Natural farming is one thing we do in our special camps as well as in col- lege from the beginning of the academic year. As a part of ‘Haritholsavam @ Kozhikode’ project, we started natural farming in 5 hectares of land of our adopted village. 2014 being the family farming year, seeds were distributed in college for students and teachers. Grow bags were also distributed among the teachers. For the healthy growth of plants, soil should provide a favorable condition. For this soil testing survey was conducted in the nearby areas. We provided them with the information in which soil quality can be improved and thereby encouraging natural farming in houses. We reaped vegetables from 10 cents of college garden grown by our volunteers, following Subhash Palleaker mode of farming. 16 KURATHI: EMERGENCE OF THE SO CALLED WEAKER SEX

pposing all atrocities against women, Providence Women’s College al- ways raises our voice. On one cold morning of December 2012, India Owoke up hearing the devastating news about the rape of Nirbhaya. With fire in our mind and eyes, we protested against this. We also performed a street play for liquor ban. The fire still hiss up in our volunteers. This year, with an aim of women empowerment, a poem ‘Kurathi’ was enacted by 45 NSS volunteers as part of Malayalam language day celebration. The urge to emerge out against all odds was instantly installed in all volunteers and students after watching the 20 minutes play. The play was performed in college and town hall. ‘Ku- rathi’ is a piece of work which held the breath of the viewers for the whole 20 minutes. All 200 volunteers were behind the victory of ‘Kurathi’. This day will be written in golden letters in the pages of college history.

17 RAISING VOICE AGAINST DRUGS

he SIGNATURE (Society for Integral Growth and Protection of Nature) has initiated an an- ti-Tobacco /drug campaign in association with Chest Hospital, near Calicut under the title TCARE-2014 which is proposed to be implemented among students, youth. etc., through educational institutions, youth and social welfare organization and other like- minded establishments. Our unit co-operated with the never ending battle against the dreadful tobacco and other life threatening drugs by providing a space in conducting a awareness class and training for anti tobacco/drug ac- tion under Advocate Shijo Joseph,Joint secretary, Bar association. The NSS volunteers of GGVHSS, Nadakkavu performed a street play in the open stage of Providence Women’s College. It was an anti drug awareness programme which was conducted together with the Excise department. The slogan of their programme was ‘clean campus, safe campuses. The play was very effective and it was well performed by the students. It could craft a picture in every one’s mind who witnessed the pro- gramme how disaster is the addiction of drug and the consequences of its effects. Higher secondary students of Nadakkavu Girls School, performed a Kala Jadha which created a true awareness among the audience. To initiate a programme at ‘Santhinagar colony’ by earlier information passed by mass media made us to rethink whether it possible to start a project with women participants. But reaching the colony and meeting the people totally changed our state of mind status and the concepts about san- thinagar. The result of the survey on the topic couldn’t bring out much outcome but a CONCERN for the people emerged in us. There were so many sufferings and ill treatment from the society to the people living there. They were not accepted or recognized by the society. As we interacted with them there were so many problems faced by the people due to lack of legal awareness and unknown subjects and information to the governments. So we thought in a very democratic way and thought why we don’t have a general survey on the social economic, health survey of this colony. And hence we selected Santhinagar as our survey site for our special camp. The presentations by the students on the survey were highly welcomed by Mr.A. Pradeep Kumar (MLA).He also enlightened to sub- mit the survey report to the government authorities for further measurements and implementation of some of the basic needs of the people in Santhinagar colony.

18 Touch of love and care…………………POOR HOME

he theme of the camp was “Yuvathathintae karunyasparsham jaivaparipalanathiludae manavamythriki’ was pertinent with the selection of the work site POOR HOME an old Taged home. The days during the camp helped the volunteers to interact with the people to share their feelings, touch of elderly affection love and care. The energy transmitted through the experienced hands made the two acre bare land into a fruitful, beautiful vegetable gar- den. The task in the poor home began early in the morning. At ‘Poor Home’ the task for the campers was to prepare the land for natural farming. The elderly aged grandparents were waiting for their visit and interactions. The experience grandparents guided and supervised the volunteers in the field of farming. Natural farming was a search for ecofriendly and farm- er friendly alternate systems of farming and a method of reverting to non-chemical agricul- ture to attain sustainability in production. It is a system to find the total changes occurring in the structure of dead soil. Only by knowing soil in all its complexity, while maintaining its functionality and quality through the action aimed at protecting its properties and acknowl- edging the importance it assumes in the quality of life worldwide, can we embark on the truly sustainable use of soil perceived as a resource and build a proper Man/Soil relationship to be left to future generations. The whole land was divided into different slots and the campers according to their group were instructed to start their work in the particular slot allotted to them. Initially it was a bare land with weeds and many thorny plants. After the preparation the land the volunteers started planting the saplings. The saplings were of vegetables, fruit bearing plants, tubers of banana were brought for planting. The volunteers with immense passion started to plant the saplings and by the end of the seventh day all the land were plant- ed by 400 different varieties of vegetable saplings, 50 fruit bearing plants and 100 banana shoots. The young saplings were handed over to the grandparents at Poor Home for their care. There were frequent visits to the Poor Home to observe the changes occurred to the saplings planted. Then after two months the fruitful result came out and the harvesting of the vegetables were done with great joy and fun. . The programme was inaugurated by District collector Mr. Prasanth, IAS on March 11 2015 19 DURABLE ASSETS CREATED BY THE UNIT

Subhash Palekar’s Zero Budget Natural Farmin After the Nature camp our plan was to conduct natural farming in the college campus for self sufficiency in vegetables and in restoring soil health by reverting to non-chemical agriculture has assumed great importance by attaining sustainability in production. In this search for eco friendly and farmer friendly alternate systems of farming, Subhash Palekar’s Zero Budget Natural Farming is increasingly becoming popular among the farming community. Subhash Palekar’s Zero Budget Natural Farming is a unique 61 method of farming which requires absolutely no monetary investment for purchase of key inputs like seeds, fertilizers and plant protection chemicals from the market. The farmer can grow hardy local va- rieties of crops without application of fertilizers and pesticides. Since it is a zero budget farming no in- stitutional credit would be required and dependence on hired labour is also reduced to bare minimum. All that the system requires is native breed of cattle which is any case forms an integral part of farming families in rural areas. It is claimed that one cow is sufficient to take up this method of farming on thirty acres of land. In this system of farming no monetary investment on the part of farmer is required for purchase of seeds, fertilizers and plant protection chemicals from the market. The farmer can produce his own seed or he may use seeds that are available with other farmers. More importantly, there is absolutely no place for fertilizers and plant protection chemicals in this scheme of farming. Dependence on hired la- bour is also reduced to the bare minimum as the system discourages intercultural operations. The whole philosophy behind this system is to make the farmer self-reliant so that he is freed from the clutches of money lenders and market dispensed high cost inputs. The present project was an attempt to make use of SUBASH PALEKAR ZERO BUDGET NATURAL FARMING system to find the total changes occurring in the structure of dead soil. This project is also aimed to create awareness among the students to protect the soil through Natural farming by creating a positive relationship between Man and Environment. The objectives of the project was to study the efficacy of ‘Beejamrutha’ in overcoming seed borne pests and providing adequate protection during the initial stage of germination and establishment, to study the efficacy of ‘Jeevamritham’ in promoting biological activity in the soil and providing adequate nutrients to crops for sustainable returns without recourse to fertilizers, to find out the effectiveness of mulching in reducing water and labour requirement. And also an involvement of students for sustainable develop- ment. Only by knowing soil in all its complexity, while maintaining its functionality and quality through actions aimed at protecting its properties, and acknowledging the importance it assumes in the quality of life worldwide, can we embark on a truly sustainable use of soil perceived as a resource and build a proper Man / Soil relationship to be left to future generations. The land area with 4 cent was also applied with jeevamritham and mulching was provided with fallen leaves twigs and green unwanted plants. The seed was also sown by dipping in beejamritham and watering was carried out regularly. The soil samples in this area were also tested in the soil analytical laboratory Thikkodi, Kozhikode .The growth of the plant was observed regularly. This project was also aimed in the preservation of indigenous varieties of seeds. The different varieties of seed sown was indigenous varieties like Arilapayar, nadan mathan, nayi kumbalam, cheera, anakom- ban venda, kuttipayar, nadan kaipa, nadan vazhudana, neela venda.
