Hanuman is the son of and Mata Anjana. At the time Mata Anjana was worshipping Lord to beget Him as her child, King was performing the yagna elsewhere to have children. As a result, King Dasharatha received sacred pudding to be shared by his three wives, leading to the births of Ram, Lakshman, Bharat and . By divine ordinance, a kite snatched a fragment of that pudding and dropped it while flying over the forest where Anjana was engaged in worship. , the Hindu deity of the wind, delivered the falling pudding to the outstretched hands of Anjana, who consumed it. Hanuman was born to her as a result.

Hanuman met Ram during Ram’s 14 year exile in the forest. Thereafter, His life is interwoven with that of Ram. Hanuman helped Ram defeat Ravan and to reunite with . During the war against Ravan, Lakshman was severely wounded. Hanuman was sent to fetch the Sanjivani herb from Dunagiri Mountain in the Himalayas. Unable to identify the precious herb, Hanuman lifted the entire mountain and delivered it to the battlefield in thus saving Lakshman’s life. Ram embraced Hanuman, declaring him as dear to Him as His own .

After Ram returned to , he was crowned Emperor. He rewarded all his well-wishers. Ram declared that he could never adequately honor or repay Hanuman for the help and services he received from Hanuman. Sita Maa, however, insisted on giving Hanuman a necklace that adorned her own neck. When Hanuman received it, he immediately started to take it apart and peer into each stone. Taken aback, many of those present demanded to know why he was destroying the precious gift. Hanuman answered that he was looking into the stones to make sure that and Sita were in them, because if they were not, the necklace was of no value to him. At this, a few mocked Hanuman, saying his reverence and love for Rama and Sita could not possibly be as deep as he implied. In response, Hanuman tore his chest open, and everyone was stunned to see Rama and Sita literally in his heart.
