2 | St. Philip’s School and Community Center Message from the Executive Director/Headmaster

St. Philip’s is an example of what is achievable when we refuse to limit life and pursuits to the possible. We are an unlikely success story—a house and community built on the foundation of Hope. Our accomplishments have come by way of our courage to surrender to our Higher Power. We have manifested the boldness to press on in challenging circumstances, conditions and obstructions. We have been able to advance this—God’s ministry—through our servant faculty and staff, devoted volunteers, sacrifi cial parents and faithful supporters.

This annual report gives a glimpse of the many blessings of how St. Philip’s has been able to touch the lives of others. We have defi ed the odds—looking beyond limited resources, naysayers and by relentless commitment to advance our mission. We have been fueled by our confi dence in God’s will for the works of St. Philip’s to continue blessing many lives. We have found a resting place in being held, imprisoned by our faith. We will not let go!

Our sincere gratitude is extended to all who labor and sacrifi ce to join us in our refusal to operate within the confi nes of what seems possible as we aspire to accomplish what most deem impossible.

Peace,

Dr. Terry J. Flowers

4 | St. Philip’s School and Community Center Message from the Board Chair

Friends,

Thank you for your support of St. Philip’s School and Community Center. Through your support, we were able to accomplish some amazing things in the 2012-13 school year. We were thrilled with the successful fundraising results of the Fall Event: A Roast of Mayor Rawlings and the Destiny Awards featuring keynote speaker, Jeb Bush. These two record-breaking fundraising events made it possible for St. Philip’s to continue to provide superior educational opportunities and countless services to our community. Additionally, our Community Center continues to make great strides in programming to benefi t those in our neighborhood. During the 2012-13 year, we began a partnership with Children’s Medical Center of to become the location for the fi rst MyChildren’s Clinic on a school campus. Because of this relationship, countless children in the South Dallas community are able to receive quality health care they need and deserve.

As I conclude two years of service to St. Philip’s as Chair of the Board of Trustees, I am constantly reminded of how HOPE, faith, and diligence has the ability to change a child’s circumstances, a neighborhood, and a community overall. I am proud to have been a small part of the solution that is St. Philip’s School and Community Center. We change lives through our educational and community outreach. We sincerely thank you for your partnership and support during the 2012-13 school year.

Sincerely,

Sherrelle Evans

2012-2013 Annual Report | 5 2012-2013 Highlights

• A team of St. Philip’s 4th and 5th grade boys took First Place in the 3rd Annual African American Male Academic Bowl sponsored by Dallas County Community College District, Project Still I Rise, and the University of North Texas at Dallas

• 4th Grade student, Semaj Musco, competed at the County Spelling Bee.

• St. Philip’s Principal, Gwendolyn Barjon, and 2nd Grade teacher, Sheila Pate, spent two weeks at an orphanage in Kenya teaching math and science with New Beginnings Orphanages International

• Over 80% of St. Philip’s students achieved A or A/B Honor Roll status

• St. Philip’s fundraising events—Schooling the Mayor: A Roast of Mayor Mike Rawlings and the 13th Annual Destiny Award Luncheon, featuring Governor Jeb Bush—were record breaking for the organization; raising over $1 million!

• Another eye sore to the Forest Heights neighborhood St. Philip’s calls home has been demolished. Three years ago, the Colonial House Motel, located at the corner of Colonial and Pennsylvania Avenues, was forced to shut down due to pressure from the city, neighborhood residents and a group of organized St. Philip’s parents. Since closing, the motel sat vacant, like so many other properties in the area, and became prone to vandals and break-ins. Last fall, the motel was demolished, making the neighborhood safer. We count this as another victory for South Dallas.

• St. Philip’s is excited to have day care back on campus, as the genesis of the school is with a day care established in the early 1970’s. Angels of Jacobs Ladder Day Care Center opened on site in October 2012 in one of the portable buildings on the campus. The day care center cares for six week olds to two year olds. It serves area families and even St. Philip’s faculty and staff in need of infant care.

• St. Philip’s formed its fi rst Robotics team and competed in the annual First Lego League Competition this year. Our students placed 2nd in the Team Cheer Award category.

• In Athletics, St. Philip’s Jr. Midget Dance and Midget Cheer teams won First Place regionally and advanced to compete nationally in Orlando, Florida.

• St. Philip’s became the sight of a Children’s Medical Center of Dallas MyChildren’s Clinic, offering pediatric care to neighborhood children and youth. Ours is the fi rst such clinic to be located on a school campus.

“HOPE is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul – and sings the tunes without the words – and never stops at all.” - Emily Dickinson

TUTORING ELI When 8-year-old Eli started to fall behind the rest of his class at Martin Luther King, Jr. Learning Center, his family knew there was one place they could turn to get Eli the extra help he needed: St. Philip’s School and Community Center. Facing the prospect of their son being held back a year, Eli’s parents enrolled him in St. Philip’s Extended After School Program.

Now, with the help of SMU student and St. Philip’s tutor Martha Poole, Eli is consistently getting A’s and B’s and is excited to start 2nd grade next year. “Keeping students excited and on track is key for high school graduation,” says St. Philip’s Principal Gwendolyn Barjon. “We want all of the neighborhood students, not just those attending St. Philip’s, to graduate from high school. High school graduation allows for so many opportunities for jobs, college, and a future free from poverty.”

“It’s fun coming up here,” Eli said. “Ms. Martha helps me and I know a lot more now.”

2012-2013 Annual Report | 7 Hope Filled Stories of Impact

FROM THE CLASSROOM TO THE COURTROOM From 1988-1991, George B. Lewis, II spent his days as a student at St. Philip’s. Back then, the School only went to third grade. Today, George spends his days in the Dallas County DA’s offi ce as a prosecutor and St. Philip’s is never too far from his heart.

“My at St. Philip’s is the backbone for who I am today,”

says George, who is now 30 years old.

After graduating St. Philip’s, he attended St. Mark’s School of Texas for 4th through 12th grade. Lewis received his B.A. in English, with a minor in Political Science, from Howard University and completed his Juris Doctorate from SMU Law School in 2007.

“St. Philip’s instilled a lot of self-pride and the motivation to strive to be the best that I can be,” he explains. “Dr. Flowers was very infl uential in my life at an early age. The person I am today is attributed to him and St. Philip’s School.”

BELONGING Three years ago, Linda Mathis moved to South Dallas with her two sons, Dennis and Deondrae, after the loss of their father from cancer. They are now active participants in St. Philip’s Community Center.

“I never thought that I would fi nd a home away from home for my boys,” explains Mathis. “Ms. Walker, the Community Center Coordinator, and the St. Philip’s family embraced my children. They gave them happiness and a sense of belonging in an area of Dallas that we knew nothing about. My kids were at a place in their lives where they needed something that I could not give them: a safe place to grow, play, learn and experience sites in Dallas that I could never afford to take them to.”

Since settling in the South Dallas/Fair Park community, Dennis and Deondrae have benefi ted from numerous programs offered through the Community Center, including athletics, Discover Dallas, Boys’ Night Out, and College Bound. Several of these programs have provided them with male role models and mentorship since the loss of their father. As teenagers, it is critical that they have positive, male infl uences in their lives.

“Ms. Walker always makes sure that my boys are involved in all of St. Philip’s events and outings,” says Ms. Mathis. “It keeps them busy, in a good way.”

2012-2013 Annual Report | 9 St. Philip’s Foundation Report

The St. Philip’s Foundation was established as a non-profi t 501(c)3 corporation in March 1997 to assist St. Philip’s School and Community Center by soliciting, receiving, investing, and managing gifts, grants, contributions and bequests to the School and Community Center. The mission of the Foundation is to support the long-term goals, purposes and objectives of St. Philip’s School and Community Center.

Since that time, through many generous contributions and with proper investments, the Foundation’s assets have grown to approximately $9 million at June 31, 2013. Over the last 12 months, the Foundation has contributed $370,500 to St. Philip’s annual operating budget.

Put another way, the purpose of the Foundation is to provide lasting HOPE and resources to the St. Philip’s ministry. We are very grateful for the love and support of all those who have assisted the Foundation with its mission.

As always, keep St. Philip’s in your thoughts and prayers.

18 | St. Philip’s School and Community Center Donor Spotlight: Rozene and Charley Pride

Rozene and Charley Pride have proudly been loyal friends of St. Philip’s School and Community Center for nearly three decades. They both share a passion for education, baseball, music, and children.

Born to sharecroppers in Mississippi, baseball was Charley’s chance to get out of the cotton fi eld, especially given that he only fi nished the 11th grade. He played in the Negro League for a while before making a name for himself in country music. In September, Mr. Pride visited St. Philip’s campus and spoke to students; sharing his incredible story.

“I’m just a country boy in the business of selling music, lyrics and emotions,” he told the captivated audience of students. He sang a couple of songs from his new album during his visit, allowing St. Philip’s students to hear the music fi rst. He also talked about his pride of being part owner of the winning Texas Rangers, even showing off the championship ring he was wearing.

Rozene has accomplished a unique feat through their ongoing support of St. Philip’s – she is the only donor to attend and support every Fall Event the organization has held. This year’s 25th Anniversary Fall Event was a milestone for both St. Philip’s and Mrs. Pride!

“My wife and I are glad to be a part of St. Philip’s School and Community Center,” said Mr. Pride, beaming. “You children will always have my support and money.”

24 | St. Philip’s School and Community Center In Memoriam

Our death is not an end if we can live on in our children and the younger generation. For they are us, our bodies are only wilted leaves on the tree of life. - Albert Einstein

GEORGE AUSTIN “TOM” SHUTT St. Philip’s lost a dear friend and supporter this year with the passing of George “Tom” Shutt who died of natural causes in his home on January 19th at the age of 81. Tom, a partner with Dallas developer Trammell Crow, devoted tremendous energy and resources to St. Philip’s along with other charitable causes in Dallas. “He loved Dallas and believed in all of its good, prominent institutions,” his wife, Nancy, told The Dallas Morning News. “He was interested in both education and history.” His memory is a blessing.

“The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.”

NANCY PENSON The Dallas community and the St. Philip’s family lost a highly respected and committed citizen and friend in the passing of Nancy Penson. For decades, Nancy and her husband, John, have been faithful friends to St. Philip’s School and Community Center. We were blessed God called her to be a compassionate ambassador and supporter of the St. Philip’s ministry. Her memory will live on in our hearts and minds forever.

“My fl esh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”

CHARLES WESLEY GOYER, JR. C.W. Goyer, Jr. adored his family and had a great passion for several area nonprofi ts, including St. Philip’s School and Community Center. We were saddened to learn of his passing but consider ourselves enriched by his compassionate support over two decades. St. Philip’s has been blessed not only by his involvement, but that of Wes and Anne Goyer, his son and daughter-in-law, and other family members. The Goyers are among St. Philip’s Legacy Families; those families of which two or more generations have been loyal friends of the organization. Wesley Goyer will remain in our hearts forever.

2012-2013 Annual Report | 27 2013 Graduates

The feeling of a comfortable and loving environment that I felt here really changed me. Before, I walked with my head down and rarely made eye contact. St. Philips changed my demeanor. It allowed me to excel. St. Philips motivated me to do extremely well.

During my two years here, I have made many friends, hopefully lifelong friends. Also, I have had the opportunity to excel academically. At St. Philips, I was involved in Math and Science Team, Robotics Team, First Lego League, Fencing, Oratorical Contests, Chess, The Heritage play for two years, Saints Basketball, and I learned how to play the piano. With all of this involvement, many times I may have been tired but good things always came out of my practices, diligence and hard work. - Excerpt from Mariah Burdette’s Valedictorian Speech

The 2012-2013 graduating 6th graders are attending the following schools:

Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy Bishop Dunne Catholic School Duncanville ISD Episcopal School of Dallas Garland ISD Good Shepherd Episcopal School St. Anthony School St. John’s Episcopal School Shelton School Winston School
