An agreement by fire departments in six local municipalities to develop a plan for automatic mutual aid is an important development in efforts to provide more efficient and effective government services in the region, according to the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce (LRCC). Municipalities that have signed on to the plan to implement automatic mutual aid are the cities of Lansing and East Lansing and Delhi, Delta, Lansing and Meridian Townships. “The leaders of the six municipalities and their fire departments should be commended for their hard work in reaching this milestone,” said Tim Daman, LRCC president & CEO. “The citizens of the region will be the winners when the automatic mutual aid plan is fully implemented, as it will result in the nearest fire equipment and personnel being quickly dispatched regardless of the jurisdiction in which they are located.” LRCC officials have been meeting for more than a year with Michigan State University president Lou Anna Simon, Leap, Inc. and several local business leaders in an effort to begin the process of determining how the region compares to others around the country when it comes to the cost, efficiency and quality of local government. As part of that ongoing process, Plante Moran recently completed the Shared Public Services Initiative, exploring various collaboration options for fire services among six units of local government. The study recommends a multi-phased approach to increase regional cooperation of the fire departments, which would include; increased collaboration to establish automatic mutual aid (phases 1 and 2), and eventually weighing the merits of combining departments (phases 3 and 4). All six municipalities have Finish approved participating in phases 1 and 2. to Suit
