THE 2008 FORD AQHYA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW was bigger and better than ever before with record entries and a new location. New and old faces graced the Oklahoma State Fair Park on August 1-9. The Ford Youth World moved to the Oklahoma City facility this year and saw an increase over the 2007 show by 38 percent to 2,748 entries. From exhibitors who came from a family of winners to those making their first trip to Ford Youth World, Tthere were many experiences during the nine-day run. Here are just a few of them. A Brand

Patti’s insurance rose by nearly 600 percent. Unable to show at all that year, Collins missed his chance to qualify for the 2005 Youth World with his accomplished 21-year-old gelding, Sir Class. “You can put anyone on him,” Collins said, “from a little kid AQHA Professional Horseman Jess Elrod with Collins Barnes, 16, and Sir Class. who is just starting to ride or you can put a world champion on him, and he can do awesome.” Sir Class is not unaccustomed to having a talented rider Head Above Water aboard. She gave me everything.” Melissa came into the eq over just planning to ride it “how it felt,” and it turned out how she’d hoped. 52 OCTOBER 2008 THE AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE JOURNAL Showmanship History

CHRISTINE HAMILTON CHRISTINE WITH 197 ENTRIES, SHOWMANSHIP WAS BY FAR THE LARGEST class at this year’s show. The prelims ran in two splits, and the judges pulled 15 from each split to perform the preliminary pattern a second time in a semifinals go. The resulting 15 was one of the best Wgroups of youth showmanship finalists assembled. And it became historic when the announcer called Katy Krshka and Rockin Zip of Yukon, Oklahoma, for third place, leaving two young men in the arena. For the first time ever, men won both the world champi- onship and the reserve world championship in showmanship at a Ford Youth World. Kody Zaagman, 19, and Invest In Hot Stock of Prophet- stown, Illinois, won reserve. And the world championship went to T.W. Grose, 18, and Leaguer Legend of Naples, Florida, the 2006 and 2007 Markel Insurance Youth All- Around Year-End High-Point award winners. The young men shook hands and the crowd cheered. According to T.W.’s winning run interview, it was the most memorable moment of a great show season. “It doesn’t get any better than this,” he said. From a field of 197, only two boys were left standing in the Ford Youth World showmanship finals: Kody Zaagman and T.W. The seventh-grader from Sarasota, Florida, got the idea to show “Carrie” in performance halter at last year’s AQHA World Championship Show, when Carrie’s full sister, Photons Classic CD, won the first amateur performance mares world championship with Bob Lines. “I knew that (Carrie) was gorgeous, so I just got her Regis- ter of Merit,” Morgan said. It was a good Ford Youth World for Morgan. She and Carrie also made the finals in the heading, and Morgan placed fifth in the finals on Smart Oak Lad. Her parents are AQHA Pro Horseman Jay and Rhonda Holmes of the Triple J Ranch. Morgan and Carrie were state qualifiers in performance halter mares. A national qualifier is someone who has shown and accumulated enough youth points in a specific event to qualify to show at the Ford Youth World. But each state or province can also send “state qualifiers,” up to four of its top youth in each class who didn’t accumulate enough points to qualify nationally. One of the changes for this year’s Ford Youth World was an increase in state qualifiers from two to four. Morgan has been riding Carrie for about two years now.
