dB Math Marco Zennaro Ermanno Pietrosemoli Goals ‣ Electromagnetic waves carry power measured in milliwatts. ‣ Decibels (dB) use a relative logarithmic relationship to reduce multiplication to simple addition. ‣ You can simplify common radio calculations by using dBm instead of mW, and dB to represent variations of power. ‣ It is simpler to solve radio calculations in your head by using dB. 2 Power ‣ Any electromagnetic wave carries energy - we can feel that when we enjoy (or suffer from) the warmth of the sun. The amount of energy received in a certain amount of time is called power. ‣ The electric field is measured in V/m (volts per meter), the power contained within it is proportional to the square of the electric field: 2 P ~ E ‣ The unit of power is the watt (W). For wireless work, the milliwatt (mW) is usually a more convenient unit. 3 Gain and Loss ‣ If the amplitude of an electromagnetic wave increases, its power increases. This increase in power is called a gain. ‣ If the amplitude decreases, its power decreases. This decrease in power is called a loss. ‣ When designing communication links, you try to maximize the gains while minimizing any losses. 4 Intro to dB ‣ Decibels are a relative measurement unit unlike the absolute measurement of milliwatts. ‣ The decibel (dB) is 10 times the decimal logarithm of the ratio between two values of a variable. The calculation of decibels uses a logarithm to allow very large or very small relations to be represented with a conveniently small number. ‣ On the logarithmic scale, the reference cannot be zero because the log of zero does not exist! 5 Why do we use dB? ‣ Power does not fade in a linear manner, but inversely as the square of the distance. -

Ribet Five fundamental operations This talk is about counting, and it’s about solving equations. Counting is a very familiar activity in mathematics. Many universities teach sophomore-level courses on discrete mathematics that turn out to be mostly about counting. For example, we ask our students to find the number of different ways of constituting a bag of a dozen lollipops if there are 5 different flavors. (The answer is 1820, I think.) Kenneth A. Ribet Five fundamental operations Solving equations is even more of a flagship activity for mathematicians. At a mathematics conference at Sundance, Robert Redford told a group of my colleagues “I hope you solve all your equations”! The kind of equations that I like to solve are Diophantine equations. Diophantus of Alexandria (third century AD) was Robert Redford’s kind of mathematician. This “father of algebra” focused on the solution to algebraic equations, especially in contexts where the solutions are constrained to be whole numbers or fractions. Kenneth A. Ribet Five fundamental operations Here’s a typical example. Consider the equation y 2 = x3 + 1. In an algebra or high school class, we might graph this equation in the plane; there’s little challenge. But what if we ask for solutions in integers (i.e., whole numbers)? It is relatively easy to discover the solutions (0; ±1), (−1; 0) and (2; ±3), and Diophantus might have asked if there are any more. -

With the aid of two coset diagrams which are easy to remember, it is shown how pairs of generators may be obtained for each of the Mathieu groups M,,, MIz, Mz2, M,, and Mz4, and also how it is then possible to use these generators to construct blocks of the associated Steiner systems S(4,5,1 l), S(5,6,12), S(3,6,22), S(4,7,23) and S(5,8,24) respectively. 1. Introduction Suppose you land yourself in 24-dimensional space, and are faced with the problem of finding the best way to pack spheres in a box. As is well known, what you really need for this is the Leech Lattice, but alas: you forgot to bring along your Miracle Octad Generator. You need to construct the Leech Lattice from scratch. This may not be so easy! But all is not lost: if you can somehow remember how to define the Mathieu group Mz4, you might be able to produce the blocks of a Steiner system S(5,8,24), and the rest can follow. In this paper it is shown how two coset diagrams (which are easy to remember) can be used to obtain pairs of generators for all five of the Mathieu groups M,,, M12, M22> Mz3 and Mz4, and also how blocks may be constructed from these for each of the Steiner systems S(4,5,1 I), S(5,6,12), S(3,6,22), S(4,7,23) and S(5,8,24) respectively. -
Classification of Finite Abelian Groups
Math 317 C1 John Sullivan Spring 2003 Classification of Finite Abelian Groups (Notes based on an article by Navarro in the Amer. Math. Monthly, February 2003.) The fundamental theorem of finite abelian groups expresses any such group as a product of cyclic groups: Theorem. Suppose G is a finite abelian group. Then G is (in a unique way) a direct product of cyclic groups of order pk with p prime. Our first step will be a special case of Cauchy’s Theorem, which we will prove later for arbitrary groups: whenever p |G| then G has an element of order p. Theorem (Cauchy). If G is a finite group, and p |G| is a prime, then G has an element of order p (or, equivalently, a subgroup of order p). ∼ Proof when G is abelian. First note that if |G| is prime, then G = Zp and we are done. In general, we work by induction. If G has no nontrivial proper subgroups, it must be a prime cyclic group, the case we’ve already handled. So we can suppose there is a nontrivial subgroup H smaller than G. Either p |H| or p |G/H|. In the first case, by induction, H has an element of order p which is also order p in G so we’re done. In the second case, if ∼ g + H has order p in G/H then |g + H| |g|, so hgi = Zkp for some k, and then kg ∈ G has order p. Note that we write our abelian groups additively. Definition. Given a prime p, a p-group is a group in which every element has order pk for some k. -

Preface Due perhaps to a recognition of the wide applicability of their elementary concepts and techniques, both combinatorics and linear algebra have gained increased representation in college mathematics curricula in recent decades. The combinatorial nature of the determinant expansion (and the related difficulty in teaching it) may hint at the plausibility of some link between the two areas. A more profound connection, the use of determinants in combinatorial enumeration goes back at least to the work of Kirchhoff in the middle of the 19th century on counting spanning trees in an electrical network. It is much less known, however, that quite apart from the theory of determinants, the elements of the theory of linear spaces has found striking applications to the theory of families of finite sets. With a mere knowledge of the concept of linear independence, unexpected connections can be made between algebra and combinatorics, thus greatly enhancing the impact of each subject on the student's perception of beauty and sense of coherence in mathematics. If these adjectives seem inflated, the reader is kindly invited to open the first chapter of the book, read the first page to the point where the first result is stated (\No more than 32 clubs can be formed in Oddtown"), and try to prove it before reading on. (The effect would, of course, be magnified if the title of this volume did not give away where to look for clues.) What we have said so far may suggest that the best place to present this material is a mathematics enhancement program for motivated high school students. -

Then the general linear group GLn(F ) is the group of invert- ible n × n matrices with entries in F under matrix multiplication. It is easy to see that GLn(F ) is, in fact, a group: matrix multiplication is associative; the identity element is In, the n × n matrix with 1’s along the main diagonal and 0’s everywhere else; and the matrices are invertible by choice. It’s not immediately clear whether GLn(F ) has infinitely many elements when F does. However, such is the case. Let a ∈ F , a 6= 0. −1 Then a · In is an invertible n × n matrix with inverse a · In. In fact, the set of all such × matrices forms a subgroup of GLn(F ) that is isomorphic to F = F \{0}. It is clear that if F is a finite field, then GLn(F ) has only finitely many elements. There are many different kinds of groups, arising in a dizzying variety of contexts. Even on this worksheet, there are too many groups for any one of us to absorb. But, with different teams exploring different examples, we should { as a class { discover some justification for the study of groups in the abstract. The Integers Modulo n: With John Goulet, you explored the additive structure of Zn. Write down the addition table for Z5 and Z6. These groups are called cyclic groups: they are generated by a single element, the element 1, in this case. That means that every element can be found by adding 1 to itself an appropriate number of times. The Group of Units Modulo n: Now when we look at Zn using multiplication as our operation, we no longer have a group. (Why not?) The group U(n) = fa 2 Zn j gcd(a; n) = 1g ∗ is sometimes written Zn and is called the group of units modulo n. An element in a number system (or ring) is a \unit" if it has a multiplicative inverse. Write down the multiplication tables for U(6), U(7), U(8) and U(12). The Group of Rotations of a Regular n-Gon: Imagine a regular polygon with n sides centered at the origin O. Let e denote the identity transformation, which leaves the poly- gon entirely fixed and let a denote a rotation about O in the counterclockwise direction by exactly 360=n degrees (2π=n radians). -

For example, Di Martino and et al. [39] established a useful connection between generation of groups by conjugate elements and the existence of elements representable by almost cyclic matrices. Their motivation was to study irreducible projective representations of the sporadic simple groups. In view of applications, it is often important to exhibit generating pairs of some special kind, such as generators carrying a geometric meaning, generators of some prescribed order, generators that offer an economical presentation of the group. -

Its derived subgroup is the largest finite subgroup W (H4)/Z2 of SO(4) of order 7200. Moreover, up to conjugacy, it has five non-normal maximal subgroups of orders 144, two 240, 400 and 576. Two groups [W (H2) × W (H2)]×Z4 and W (H3)×Z2 possess noncrystallographic structures with orders 400 and 240 respectively. The groups of orders 144, 240 and 576 are the extensions of the Weyl groups of the root systems of SU(3)×SU(3), SU(5) and SO(8) respectively. We represent the maximal subgroups of W (H4) with sets of quaternion pairs acting on the quaternionic root systems. PACS numbers: 02.20.Bb INTRODUCTION The noncrystallographic Coxeter group W (H4) of order 14400 generates some interests [1] for its relevance to the quasicrystallographic structures in condensed matter physics [2, 3] as well as its unique relation with the E8 gauge symmetry associated with the heterotic superstring theory [4]. The Coxeter group W (H4) [5] is the maximal finite subgroup of O(4), the finite subgroups of which have been classified by du Val [6] and by Conway and Smith [7].
