Research Project(s) 2012: PI and T/L: - Field Geology Mapping Campaign in Mwingi-Nguni Area, Kitui County, Kenya. 2011: PI and T/L: - Field Geology Mapping Exercise of Katangi-Tiva Area, Machakos and Kitui Counties, Kenya. 2010: PI and T/L: - Field Geology Mapping exercise of Kithyoko Area, Machakos County, Kenya. 2007: PI Quantifying Groundwater Recharge in River Njoro Watershed, Kenya”. Quantification of groundwater recharge is a basic prerequisite for efficient groundwater management. While there are several approaches to estimating groundwater recharge rates, some of the approaches proposed cannot be applied in catchment-wide hydrogeological investigations due to a lack of data. Thus, some conventional recharge estimation techniques for which data are most often available have to be used in estimating groundwater recharge. In this study, water level fluctuation, the precipitation vs water level relation, and hydrological budget methods, are used to estimate recharge rates in the River Njoro Watershed in Kenya.

2006: Project Hydrologist- “Optimization of Turkwel River Water Resource for Improved Sustainable Livelihoods”. At the request of UNEP/UNOPS, Egerton - 10 - University constituted a multi- disciplinary team of researchers to conduct the proposed study, which forms part of the objectives of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) funded Indigenous Vegetation Project (IVP) of Kenya. The main task of the study was to determine the optimum downstream water flow regime of the Turkwel River, which would benefit all stakeholders and all land-usages. The outcome of the study was also meant be used in decision making by Turkwel dam management and other policy makers.

2002 to 2008: Co-Principle Investigator/ Hydrology Component of Sustainable Management of Watersheds-Collaborative Research Support Program (SUMAWA–CRSP): River Njoro Watershed Project. In collaboration with , Department of Fisheries, Kenya Wildlife Service, University of Wyoming, University of California-Davis and Utah State University. (GL- CRSP/USAID). SUMAWA Project is a multidisciplinary research effort focusing on biophysical and human-related factors governing watershed processes for the purpose of improving long-term sustainability of rural watersheds in Kenya and East Africa. The research area is a critical watershed in Southwest Kenya of the Mau Complex that has undergone recent and rapid land use change and population growth with associated negative impacts to water resources, human health, rural livelihoods, and the local economy. The core research focus is on the upland portion of the watershed where livestock and small-holder agriculture are significant components affecting the economic and ecologic health of the watershed system. Interventions and outreach will be developed through the integration of scientific research findings with stakeholder analyses to support local communities and decision-makers in effectively identifying and implementing local solutions to enhance both the biophysical and human-related components of the watershed.

Disaster Management

Has been a member of United Nations office of Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) where we have been involved in developing appropriate curriculum for use of Space Technology for Disaster Management particularly in Africa. This has

- 11 - been in line with the Vienna Declaration that recommended specific actions that should be taken to enable space technologies to contribute to the solution of global challenges of the new millennium. One of the recommendations put forward was the need "to implement an integrated, global system, especially through international cooperation, to manage natural disaster mitigation, relief and prevention efforts, especially of an international nature, through Earth observation, communications and other space-based services, making maximum use of existing capabilities and filling gaps in worldwide satellite coverage".
