Park at the designated lot provided by the conservation area (pay & display), as the upper trails are curated, including a wide trail from the parking lot, which is accessible. At the top end of the trail, visit the large lookout perched at the edge of the cliff, and spend some taking in the vista views. Devil’s Punch Bowl Falls is a stunning 37-metre ribbon waterfall, with an overhang feature. Spring is the best season for the rush of water from Stoney Creek (Creek), as it tumbles over the rock. All other seasons, it is a mere trickle, however the view of the gorge tells the story of the geology composition. The bowl itself is about 34-metres deep and 60-metres across. The gorge was caused from erosion of the recession of the glaciers from Lake Ontario basin about 10,000 to 12,000 years ago. Today, the erosion has exposed a magnificent sequence of geological strata from the lower shale beds to the resistant Lockport dolostone cap rock. Opposite Devil’s Punch Bowl CA, on Ridge Road, is Devil’s Punch Bowl Market and Bakery. It’s a lovely nostalgic store with a delicious bakery. Try the amazing home-made squares, and take home a pie to share. This 150-year-old red barn attraction is a step-back-in-time treasure.

Along the swamp section, several highly significant species of plants grow here. The Vinemount Swamp is a headwaters swamp and serves an important purpose in regulating the stream flow in Forty Mile Creek and Stoney Creek. Boardwalks meander through this area, providing an interesting journey that is scenic and tranquil.

Nestled under the escarpment, the 32-acre park is home to Battlefield House Museum & Park, National Historic Site. Visit the museum, which is an early 19th century homestead, once home to the Gage family. The Gages worked the land with their then children and became a strong voice in the hamlet of Stoney Creek. During the War of 1812, the family retreated to their cellar as the Battle of Stoney Creek raged outside. The 100-foot high Battlefield Monument stands as a symbol of peace and commemorates those soldiers who died on June 6, 1813. To return to Devil’s Punch Bowl CA, retrace your route along the trail. Remember, there is a climb back up the trail steps to the upper escarpment.

Historical Notable On June 5, 1813, an invading army of about 3,000 men, commanded by Brigadier-General John Chandler, camped in this vicinity. That evening some 700 British regulars of the 8th and 49th Regiments, under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel John Harvey, left their encampment on Burlington Heights to attack the enemy. The assault was launched early the following morning under cover of darkness. In the fierce and confused fighting which followed, heavy losses were suffered on both sides, but the Americans were defeated and withdrew after their two senior offers, Brigadier-Generals Chandler and Winder, were captured. This victory is credited with preventing from being overrun in 1813. Archaeological and Historic Sites Board of Ontario
