Eckels Accession Numbers: 2004.027, 2006.007, 2008.002 Citation: [Identification of Item], Robert A. Eckels Audio-Visual Collection, Harris County Archives, Houston, Texas. Creator History: Born March 14, 1957, in Houston, Texas, to Robert Young and Carolyn Bickley Eckels, Robert Allen Eckels came of age in a political environment. His father, Bob, served on the Houston Independent School District Board and later was elected as a Republican to Commissioner of Precinct 3 in Harris County. After graduating from the University of Houston, Eckels ran for election to the newly created District 133 in the Texas House of Representatives. He served six terms with distinction on the Environmental Affairs, County Affairs, Government Organization, State Affairs, and House Calendars committees. While serving in the legislature, he also attended law school at the South Texas School of Law and graduated with his Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1993. In 1994 Eckels defeated Democrat Vince Ryan in the race for Harris County Judge, replacing retiring Jon Lindsay. While in office he instituted organizational changes to the county government. He demonstrated his interest in the youth of Harris County with the establishment of the Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Program, the funding of after school programs with the Harris County Department of Education and the Texas Workforce Commission, and opening the Children’s Assessment Center. The role of the Houston Sports Authority in the replacement of the Astrodome with NRG Stadium and building Minute Maid Park and the Toyota Center were important issues during his tenure as county judge. Eckels’s interest in Emergency Management culminated with all emergency agencies housed under one roof at Transtar. He also founded the Harris County Citizens Corps which trained volunteers to assist in disaster situations. In August 2005 when Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, Judge Eckels led the county in turning the Harris County Astrodome and Reliant Center into the largest shelter operation in United States Page 1 of 19 ROBERT A. ECKELS AUDIO VISUAL COLLECTIONS – MC024 history as over 250,000 Louisiana residents fled to the Houston area. He received numerous awards and accolades for his Katrina work. • Railway Employee Records for Colorado Volume Iii
RAILWAY EMPLOYEE RECORDS FOR COLORADO VOLUME III By Gerald E. Sherard (2005) When Denver’s Union Station opened in 1881, it saw 88 trains a day during its gold-rush peak. When passenger trains were a popular way to travel, Union Station regularly saw sixty to eighty daily arrivals and departures and as many as a million passengers a year. Many freight trains also passed through the area. In the early 1900s, there were 2.25 million railroad workers in America. After World War II the popularity and frequency of train travel began to wane. The first railroad line to be completed in Colorado was in 1871 and was the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad line between Denver and Colorado Springs. A question we often hear is: “My father used to work for the railroad. How can I get information on Him?” Most railroad historical societies have no records on employees. Most employment records are owned today by the surviving railroad companies and the Railroad Retirement Board. For example, most such records for the Union Pacific Railroad are in storage in Hutchinson, Kansas salt mines, off limits to all but the lawyers. The Union Pacific currently declines to help with former employee genealogy requests. However, if you are looking for railroad employee records for early Colorado railroads, you may have some success. The Colorado Railroad Museum Library currently has 11,368 employee personnel records. These Colorado employee records are primarily for the following railroads which are not longer operating. Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad (AT&SF) Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad employee records of employment are recorded in a bound ledger book (record number 736) and box numbers 766 and 1287 for the years 1883 through 1939 for the joint line from Denver to Pueblo.

  • Incorporating Mep Architectural Engineering
INCORPORATING MECHANICAL, ELECTRICAL AND PLUMBING SYSTEMS INTO HISTORIC PRESERVATION PROJECTS – THREE CASE STUDIES by JASON TERRY B.S., Kansas State University, 2008 A REPORT Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree MASTER OF SCIENCE Department of Architectural Engineering and Construction Science College of Engineering KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY Manhattan, Kansas 2008 Approved by: Major Professor Sutton Stephens, Ph.D., P.E., S.E. ABSTRACT Architectural engineers face many challenges in the design and implementation of mechanical, electrical, lighting, plumbing, and fire protection systems in buildings. Space and aesthetic coordination must be managed between the architects, engineers, contractors, and building owners. Further design issues are involved when renovating or preserving historic properties. Historic buildings often contain additional design limitations and character defining features that must be preserved. A building’s character defining features often represent past history, culture, and architecture. To better understand the design coordination and other issues faced in historic renovation, three case studies located in Kansas City, Missouri, are presented to investigate the application of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) system design into historic buildings. The three case studies include: the Stowers Institute for Medical Research, as a mechanical design; the Union Station, as an electrical and lighting design; and the Webster House, as a plumbing and fire protection design. The renovation projects’ architects, engineers, and contractors were personally interviewed to obtain the most accurate information and account of the design and construction process. Additional information was gathered, and a tour of each building allowed for the pictorial documentation of each site. Preserving the historic character of buildings during renovations has many advantages and disadvantages for both the owners and the designers.
