CN Locomotives Retired since last issue:

CN GP9 slug 215 on May 9th

WC SD45 7525 on June 1st (The last WC SD45 to operate on CN).

BCOL RS18CAT 621 on June 1st

SAR B30-7 1012 on June 4th

SAR B23-7 1010 on June 6th

DMIR 209, retired March 26th and DMIR SD40-3 418 retired on April 10th, had been reported on the internet as un-retired on April 17th, but this did not occur.

CN SD38-2 1651 was moved to Woodcrest for repairs. This marks the first time a former NORTHERN RAILWAYS unit has entered the United States. DMIR SD38-2 209 (mentioned above), was on the same train into Woodcrest, IL. It is suspected that the crankshaft from WC 209 will go into CN 1651. CN SD38-2 1651 is former NAR 401. CN’s Woodcrest Shop has prepared former WISCONSIN CENTRAL SD45’s 6588, 7519, and 7524 for their move to CYCLE SYSTEMS Inc. They have the reporting marks CSIX, and are likely going for scrap.

In June, Wisconsin Central SD45 7495, has been donated to the LAKESHORE RAILWAY MUSEUM in Duluth, MN. This is a non-operational unit.

Unfortunately, CRO has learned the two historical units, CN GMD1 1063 and SD40 5000, were not removed, and were apparently sold in the CN auction last month. They are now not available for donation to any CN historical group or museums. Further news on their dispositions will follow in the next issue.

In May CN sold CN GP9RM’s 4006, 4021, 4033, and 4035, to an unknown buyer. In June these “geeps” were moving to the BURLINGTON JUNCTION Railway, for painting. Further updates will follow.

As reported in last months issue, CN is now using Distributed Power units on its longer freights east of . Photo: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=188746

CN train 363 derailed 23 of its 130 cars in Cobourg, , near mileage 266 on the Kingston Subdivision on April 28th. This is CN’s mainline between Toronto, Ontario and , . A fire had to be extinguished after the derailed train struck a piece of Herzog ballast equipment. The derailment blocked both mainline tracks and passengers had to be bused around the derailment site, until the line was eventually re-opened. ’s parallel Belleville Subdivision was also shut down for a short time due to the derailment.

The next day on April 29th, CN train 308 derailed several cars on the Pelletier Subdivision three miles west of Edmundston, New Brunswick. However, all the derailed cars remained upright this time. The incident affected VIA Rail operations between , New Brunswick and .

On May 10th, CN train 308 derailed 54 of its 137 cars on the Napadogan Subdivision, near Saint-André, New Brunswick. Train 308 operates between Toronto, Ontario and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. The derailment affected CN operations between Moncton, New Brunswick and Quebec City. There were no injuries reported, but 100 residents from New Brunswick and nearby Maine were evacuated from their homes as a precaution. They were allowed to return later that night after officials determined that the cars were not leaking any hazardous chemicals. The railway and the Transportation Safety Board were investigating the cause of the incident.

CN C44-9W 2538 was wrecked on train 114-06 at Rockyford, AB. The train hit a washout and the three units and 13 cars were derailed. Photo of CN 2538: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=189604

On May 1st, CN train 391 arrived at Brantford, Ontario on the Dundas Subdivision powered by SD60F 5526, SD40-2(W) 5260, Dash 8-40CM 2421, which was dead on arrival, and CEFX SD40-2 2789. While the conductor went inside the office to obtain paperwork, the engineer attempted to re-start 2421. He was able to do so, however, shortly after a fire broke-out on the roof of the unit. The engineer quickly discovered the situation and shut 2421 down. The fire department was called, but the flames went out before they arrived on the scene. The unit was then set-off in the yard at Brantford for evaluation prior to being moved again.

In May, Walter Pfefferle caught CN 399 Westbound at Mile 54 Dundas st Beachville, ON when he was out riding his bike, with CN C44-9W 2624 leading IC SD40-2R 6013 Operation Lifesaver paint, CN SD50F 5440 and CN/DMIR SD40-3 406. Ex-DMIR 406 was freshly painted and had the full CN noodle treatment. http://railfan.thegrebs.com/CN/cn2624a http://railfan.thegrebs.com/CN/ic6013a http://railfan.thegrebs.com/CN/cn5440a http://railfan.thegrebs.com/CN/cn406a

On May 18th, 2007 CN announced plans to sell its Montreal Complex in Montreal, and to lease back its corporate headquarters building and the railway passenger facilities of the station, two key components of the CSC. The CSC houses CN's headquarters building, the passenger rail activities of VIA Rail Inc., AMT (Agence Metropolitaine de Transport) and , and extensive retail operations. This transaction will not affect the location of CN's corporate headquarters in Montreal or the rail passenger facilities of Central Station, both of which CN plans to lease back on a long-term basis. CN will take the necessary measures to ensure the heritage features of the station are maintained and protected for the future in the proposed real estate transaction. CN, through its advisor for the transaction, Brookfield Financial Real Estate Group, will invite proposals from qualified parties to bid on the CSC complex, and anticipates reaching a definitive agreement on the sale, as well as the leaseback of its headquarters and the station's rail facilities, by the fall of 2007.

CP Locomotives Retired since last issue:

CP GP9u’s 1592 and 1637, were both retired on May 11th.

RAILPOWER GG20B 1701, (Ex-CP 1701), is now been forwarded to Erie, Pennsylvania. At press time, the switcher was on SOO LINE rails near Chicago.

In early June, CP ES44AC’s 8858 and 8859 were sent from the GE plant in Erie, PA., painted in CP red but with no CP lettering. They will be lettered at the Ogden Shop in Calgary in a new promotional paint scheme, commemorating the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. Locomotive Guru Bill Miller wrote: “There are many differences between 8700- 8759 and 8760-8839-series, maybe more with 8840-8859-series, but I haven't looked that hard at these new ones yet. The most obvious differences are their trucks (steerables vs Hi-ads a/k/a "rollerblades"), exhaust stack area, and the dynamic brake grid arrangement.”

On May 25th, 2007, GE introduced 11 new “ecomagination” products, including the world’s first energy efficient hybrid locomotive. This new locomotive is expected to demonstrate on CP later this summer, and is panted green and yellow.

CP retired SD40-2 5577 has been sold to the NEW HOPE & IVYLAND, in Pennsylvania. On May 30th, the locomotive was moved on CP freight 254 from Buffalo, NY.

CP is receiving their 21 SD40-2’s back from lease to FERROMEX in Mexico: 5604, 5609, 5611, 5643, 5675, 5683, 5684, 5688, 5692, 5701, 5709, 5716, 5717, 5720, 5723, 5725, 5728, 5729, 5805, and 5830. 11 of these units will be moving to UP to repay H-P-H: 5609, 5611, 5683, 5692, 5709, 5716, 5717, 5720, 5723, 5729, and 5805. Four of this group are going to BNSF to repay H-P-H: 5604, 5643, 5701, and 5630. Two units are still off-line; 5675, and 5748 and four units have been returned to CP, and are at Moose Jaw for repairs: 5684, 5688, 5725, and 5728.

CP has sold retired SD40-2’s 5699, and 5752 to the NORTHERN PLAINS Railroad, in North Dakota. There will be an additional SD40-2 to follow.

Most of the American units (UP, BNSF, NS, etc.), that had been repaying H-P-H, and adding a rainbow of colour to CP freights since April 2007, are now off the property. Brian Switzer provided this example with a photo of CP train 255 north in Fenwick, Ontario April 8th, 2007, with NS C44-9W 9405 leading. http://railphotos.herkamur.ca/xwiki/bin/view/Photos/NS9405-20070408-04

Rouses Point,NY May 20 at 19:52pm As first reported last month, CP is now finally moving their unit train of 28 former NJ TRANSIT commuter coaches from Binghamton to Buffalo, north to Hamilton, London and Windsor, where they will be handed off to NS in Detroit for furtherance, to UP in Chicago. The commuter cars are destined for Colorado to get rebuilt for their new owners, the UTAH TRANSIT AUTHOURITY.

On May 16, CPR maintenance workers across Canada walked off the job, seeking a 13 per cent wage increase over the next three years. A strike deadline had passed early that day with the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference unable to reach an agreement with the railway. The walkout affected around 3,200 employees, including 1,200 track inspectors. CPR officials said they would send about 1,300 trained management employees to cover the jobs of the striking workers. The railway had predicted the strike would have a minimal impact on their operations. Teamsters union leader William Brehl said the key issue was over wages and reportedly the railway had repeatedly rejected the union’s request for a 13 per cent raise over the next three years.

In early June, CP operated a track evaluation inspection train near Montreal, with the following consist: CP GP9u 8218, CP 424994 (Tool car, supply & services), CP 65 (Accomodation Car, Budd ex-AMTK 6025). CP 64 (Track Evaluation & observation Car, PS ex-AMTK 5476) http://www.myrailfan.com/News/1002/index.htm

In May, CPR announced that it had finished negotiations with Transport Canada on a new operating agreement for the 6,300 federally owned covered hopper cars that are in service on the railway. The agreement is still subject to federal government approvals, but was agreed upon as a result of the Canadian government’s announcement from May 4, where they said it would keep ownership of the cars and would negotiate a new operating agreement and rail car remanufacturing program with CPR and CN. This was to ensure the cars were kept in a safe and efficient operating condition. Under the agreement with Transport Canada, CPR will over the next five years, begin a large-scale hopper car inspection and refurbishment program, as well as continue regular car maintenance procedures. The Canadian Government had bought 13,000 hopper cars during the 1970’s and 1980’s for the transportation of western Canadian grain to export markets.

Unfortunately no one wanted to purchase the QNS&L SD40-2`s, and SD40-3`s that were up for sale through J&L Consulting. Ex-QNS&L SD40-3 303 is being carefully dismantled at Jabco Industrial Services n Chicago Heights, Il, May 16, 2007. http://csxchicago.gotdns.com:6003/CN_Trains/SmallRoll62/0032313-R3-058-27A.jpg TSHIUETIN Rail Transportation (Transport Ferroviaire Tshiuetin Inc), which owns and operates former QNS&L trackage in a very remote area of Quebec, increased its rolling stock in May 2007, by receiving 5 side air dump cars, purchased from Andrew Merrilees in Montreal. The cars had been stored in Thetford Mines, QC, until they could be loaded on trucks and delivered to Sept-Iles, in the QNSL yard, for furtherance to Schefferville, QC. In early-June TSHIUETIN is also receiving two more Heritage coaches, ex-Amtrak, nos. 7001 & 7614, from Orlando, FL via CSX-CN to Matane. TSHIUETIN will renumber them TFT 1003 & 1004, and name them "Uashat" and "Mani-Utenam". They will also get two ex- WC box cars (12049 & 12066) that are currently sitting in Matane awaiting ferry- boat to Sept-Iles. The railroad will receive two F40PH locomotives, (Ex-M&E, nee- AMTRAK 265 & 291) and will be numbered TFT 600 & 601. At press time they were Morristown-NJ, but should be in Quebec by the time you read this. Once arrived, they will be repainted into the TFT's livery.

In May CANDO CONTRACTING announced they would stay on as the operator of the former CP Owen Sound Subdivision that runs between Streetsville and Orangeville, Ontario. Cando’s ORANGEVILLE-BRAMPTON Railway (OBRY) operates freight and tourist train service on the scenic line.

On April 24, an open house was held in the former Waterloo-St. Jacobs Railway station in the city of Waterloo, Ontario for the general public to view information regarding a new proposed tourist train. The St. Thomas, Ontario-based Southern Ontario Locomotive Restoration Society (SOLRS) was aiming to re-establish a tourist train service that would operate on Thursdays and weekends from June until December between Waterloo and the village of St. Jacobs on the Waterloo Spur. The operation would be named the . The former Waterloo-St. Jacobs Railway operated on the spur from 1997 to 1999 before it was shut down due to declining business. The line was eventually sold to the Region of Waterloo, who then contracted CN to maintain the spur. Currently, the GODERICH-EXETER Railway operates on the spur, servicing two large chemical companies in Elmira as well as industries in Waterloo and St. Jacobs. The “Waterloo Central Railway” train might consist of several open and closed passenger cars and SOLRS GE 70-tonner #10 powering the train. Former 0-6-0 #9 might also be utilized, but only on special occasions. The Region of Waterloo is in favor of the proposed train and Waterloo city council was slated to vote on the use of the Waterloo station by SOLRS in late May. If the society does find a new home in Waterloo, the equipment would likely be stored on the siding beside the downtown Waterloo station.

Marc Chouinard provided these photo’s from last winter taken outside the former Dominion Bridge site of the tied up NdeM E60C’s. They are nice looking locomotives! http://tinyurl.com/22jm78

COMMUTER LINES AND VIA RAIL

AMT (Agence Metropolitaine de Transport) June locomotive report AMT F59PHI’s 1321-1330 are all in service except for 1320 with a crank case failure. AMT GP9RM’s 1310, 1311, and 1313, are all in service. AMT GP9RM 1312 has a dead generator, but has been operating anyway as a "cab- control" unit, running with (on again/off again) AMT F40PH 400, which is being used only as secondary power due to an RRC defect. F40PH 243 was repaired in late May and has returned to service with AMT F40PH’s 287, 319, 372 and 411 on the St-Hilaire line (which is the CN mainline southeast out of Central Station). On June 6th,VIA F40PH 6401 (still sporting the Spiderman II decal) arrived at AMT/CP Sortin yard, and is now leased by AMT to increase their active locomotive roster. The first job for VIA 6401 was pushing train #23 out of Lucien L'Allier (Formerly Windsor Station) at 5h00pm on June 7th. Toronto area readers may recognize the former GO TRANSIT coaches on both trains. http://www.myrailfan.com/collection/VIA/VIA_6401/img.aspx?ID=VIA_6401_MONTREAL_1.jpg At press time (June 17th), another leased VIA F40PH no. 6408, and also wearing the Spiderman decal, was seen operating on the AMT’s St-Hilaire – Central Station line south over the Victoria Bridge. All photos by Marc Chouinard. http://www.myrailfan.com/News/1001/index.htm

Three of Tom Payne's ex-AMT /nee-CP commuter coaches are now on route to their new home on the TIERRA MADRE RR. Three others were sold two years ago to Tom Payne as well. His steam engine ex-READING T-1 4-8-4 #2100 and a diesel are going up for auction on account of bankruptcy of the Golden Pacific Railroad. He does not own the ex-Chicago double deck commuters cars and another diesel that were used last year. http://www.tmrx.net/index.html

WALLED LAKE SCENIC RR in Michigan is also now out-of-business and it seems everything is up for sale including former AMT/STCUM/CP FP7A’s 1304 and 1306, GTW SW1200 1512 and an old Alco yard engine as well. FP7A 1306 was painted in the AMT’s short-lived “Riverain” paint scheme, and had been stored at Expo Rail, in Delson, QC when AMT retired their covered wagons.

GO TRANSIT:

New GO TRANSIT MP40PH-3C 601 arrived in Canada from Boise under MTEX reporting marks, and was moved “dead in tow” over CP from Vancouver to Winnipeg. It then moved to Toronto on 222-25, behind three freights cars and led by CP 5940-5648-5736. Apparently the unit had come to Toronto for the APTA convention on the weekend of June 2nd and 3rd. It is expected to return to Boisie, ID, soon after that. Back on May 21st, GO TRANSIT MP40PH-3C 601 was spotted at Calgary’s Alyth Yard still enroute to Toronto. Here are more photo’s of GO TRANSIT “Swoosh” MP40PH-3C. http://www.gotransit.com/PUBLIC/news/media/NewGOlocomotives.htm

On June 8th, GO TRANSIT unveiled it's new expansion plans, which include a two year timeline to construct a new third track, from Oakville to Port Credit, Ontario.

VIA Rail Canada:

VIA Rail Canada’s new Toronto-Niagara Bike Train is launching in summer 2007, between Toronto and Niagara Falls, and will introduce bike racks onboard select VIA Rail Canada departures. The bike car is VIA HEP-equipped 8612, originally VIA/CP 612, rebuilt at AMF (Pointe St-Charles) 1990-1992 and built as CP 3012 12-54 as a baggage-crew-sleeping car, to VIA 1-1973. On May 20th, 2007, UP ran UP FEF 4-8-4 Northern #844 and ex-SP G5 4-8-4 #4449 on a double header in the Seattle, WA area. The locomotives took turns leading in each dierection. In case some of you did not see this video link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXUSUAYMwWQ It shows a collision on June 14, 2007 on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe line just north of Madera, where the train, with seven locomotives and 55 cars, braked hard at the last minute and struck a northbound train with four locomotives and 30 cars while pulling on to the opened passing siding. At impact, the southbound train was traveling at 22 mph, and the northbound train at 38 mph. They struck almost head-on. Five crew members on the two trains were injured, and 24 locomotives and cars derailed, resulting in more than $5 million in damage.

Letters:

G'day Will,

I noticed your site on the International Rail News site at work. (I am a rail industry consultant). Some newsletter! I have put up a dozen pictures made by G.H.Soule before the War. These came to Australia in a photo-swap between Mr Soule (an Englishman) and John Buckland, and Aussie who was building what became a huge collection. John allowed me to have copy negs made about 30 years ago. The pictures are rippers - I'm sure they would be appreciated in Canada, but not many have discovered the site. See what you think:- http://thirties-cpr.fotopic.net/
