Unica (Ercck, North (Earolina class of2004 A grand total of degrees conferred during the 2003-2004 academic year is a record-breaking 3108. A total of 1411 stu dents (1003 undergraduate and 408 graduate and professional) are listed in this commencement program. The candidates for undeigraduates include 217 Associate in Arts. 34 Bachelor of Applied Science, 47 Bachelor of Health Science, 272 Bachelor of Business Administration. 296 Bachelor of Science, 134 Bachelor of Arts, and 3 Bachelor of Social Woric.
In addition to the 1411 students in the graduation program today, 1697 students have eamed bachelor s degrees through the University'"s program at Tunku Abdul Rahman College in Kuala Luinpur, Malaysia.
Of the graduate and professional candidates, there are 111 Master of Business Administration, 10 Master of Trust and hivestment Management, 44 Master of Education, 11 Master of School Administration, 3 Master of Arts, 7 Master of Arts in Christian Education, 31 Master of Divinity, 16 Master of Science, 77 Doctor of Pharmacy, and 98 Juris Doctors. Included with the 1411 in the program today are the 449 students who completed their degree in December 2003 and another 228 who finished in August 2003. The 734 candidates who completed their requirements this month complete the Class of 2004.
Today's ceremony maiks the 118th graduation exercises of Campbell University. Estabhshed in 1887 as an academy with a charter-class enrollment of sixteen students, Campbell Universitv' has developed into a major university that will enroll more than 9,000 students during the 2004 academic year. Students hail fi"om all one-hundred North Carolina counties, fifty states of the United States and fifty-three countries of the world.
Established as a liberal arts college which initially awarded the Associate and Bachelors degrees, the academic program of Campbell University was greatly expanded in 1976 when the trustees authorized the establishment of graduate programs in education and business and the awarding of the Master of Education and Master of Business Administration degrees.
Doctoral programs were authorized by the trustees in 1976 with the establishment of the Nomian Adrian Wiggins School of Law and the awarding of the Juris Doctor degree. The Doctor of Phamiacy degree w as approved in 1985 with the establishment of the Campbell University' School of Pharmacy.
The university s newest and sixth school. The Campbell Universitv Divinity School, yvas estabhshed on October 25,1995 and enrolled the charter class in August, 19%.
Because of the university 's strategic location, Campbell provides educational opportunities for servicemen and women at military installations located at Fort Bragg, Pope Air Force Base. Neyv River Air Base, and Camp Lejeune.
In keeping with the university 's commitment to global education, Campbell University- students regularly enroll in inter national programs in Malaysia. Great Britain, France, Italy, and South America. Currently, more than 3,000 students from Malaysia are enrolled in Campbell University at Tunku Abdul Rahman College in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Edwin Graves Wilson was bom in Leaksville (now Eden), North Carolina. In his early years, he evidenced the keen and inquisitive intellect that would mark his entire career Graduating summa cum laude from Wake Forest College in 1943, he then proceeded to Harvard University, where he eamed an A.M. in 1948 and aPh.D. in 1952.
As a faculty member at Wake Forest University since 1951, Dr. Wilson's reputation as a gifted teacher grew with every successive year. He soon came to be regarded as one of the finest professors on campus; one with whom every student should study, regardless of the student's academic major The way in which Dr. Wilson could bring to life the works of Keats, Shelley, Byron, Hunt, and others, quickly became legendary.
Dr Wilson has also been a man who shouldered well a mantle of leadership in behalf of Wake Forest. From Assistant, to Acting, to Dean of the College in 1960, a short seven years later he would be elevated to the posi tion of Provost and remain in that post until stepping away in 1990. Always a man of high energy, his involve ments since 1990 have evidenced the same dedication and loyalty to the worthy endeavors of Wake Forest University and the surrounding city of Winston-Salem.
Dr. Wilson is married to the former Emily Louise Herring of Columbus, Georgia. They are the parents of one son and two daughters.

^ony ^aker Cartlei^e (Doctor ofT^ivmity Dr. Cartledge began his tenure with the Biblical Recorder after serving 26 years as a pastor. His formal education came from the University of Georgia (Bachelor of Science in education). Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (Master of Divinity) and Duke University (Doctor of Philosophy). He currently serves the Biblical Recorder as Editor/President. His interest in writing is long-standing, for he has enjoyed telling stories as long as he has enjoyed reading them. He has contributed articles to many news papers and denominational magazines. Cartledge also is a superb academician, having published articles in various scholarly journals and authored two books, the most recent of which is a lengthy commentary on 1 and 2 Samuel.
(Doctor of Science Mr Small is Chief Pharmacy Officer at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston- Salem, North Carolina. Mr. Small eamed his degree in Pharmacy and an MBA from the University of North Carolina. Practicing in an integrated healthcare delivery system, he has a broad scope of phar maceutical-care experience in the managed-care environment that includes retail, long-term care, primary care, hospital and institutional practice. Mr. Small is an adjunct professor of Pharmacy Practice with the UNC and Campbell Schools of Pharmacy, and Lecturer in Hospital Administration at Wake Forest University. He is a member of several professional organizations including; APHA, ASHP, ASPEN, ACCP and other state and national organizations. He has contributed to the professional body of knowl edge on such topics as Quality Management, Antibiotic Utilization Management, Dmg Cost Reduction Strategies, CPOE and other technologies in the medication-use process and Pharmaceutical Care improvement strategies, including the concept of Continuity of Care.
'Edzi/in QrciVes Wilson (Doctor of ^Humane Letters Dr Wilson has been a stalwart member of the Wake Forest University faculty and administration since 195L During this time, he has served as Professor, Dean, Vice-President, Provost, and, since 2002, Provost Emeritus. Dr. Wilson earned a B.A. from Wake Forest College; and the A.M. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University. His community, professional, and other involvements are numerous, including service as President of the North Carolina Association of Colleges and Universities, President of the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Piedmont Opera Theatre, the Winston-Salem Arts Council, and the Winston-Salem Gallery of Contemporary Art. He has served on the Boards of several institutions. Other honors and activities include membership in Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa, Alpha Phi Omega, and Kappa Sigma.
4 !Algemon Sydney Sutdvan Sizvard For half a century, the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation has worked to perpetuate quahties reflected in the life of the nineteenth centur> New Yorker after whom the foundation was named.
Law} er. devout Christian, mediator, orator, pliilanthropist. and family man, Algemon Sydney Sullivaa in the words of a friend, "reached out both hands in constant helpfulness to men." And many were touched by him ~ from street beggars and Sunday School children to the most powerful businessmen and politicians of the city. With all of them, he commanded affection and respect.
In 1890. three years after his death, a memorial committee (including former President Grover Cleveland among its 77 mem bers) was established. Its members charged themselves with keeping alive the exemplary traits of Mr. Sullivan. When their ranks began to thin in the late 1920's. they passed along the task to the New York Southern Society , of which Sullivan had been the first president. Each year the society's Algemon Sydney Sullivan awards were giv en to deserv ing students and out standing citizens at colleges and universities in the South. Since 1934. the Algemon Sydney Sullivan Foundation has continued to help both students and worthy institutions. Mr. SulMvan's son, George, never married, and the Sullivans left no direct descendants. Nonetheless, there have been heirs - three generations of scholarsliip and award recipients across tlie South. Through tliem Algemon Sydney Sullivan and Iris wife. Mary Mildred, still live and still influence the lives of others.
CheryCLynne Storer Ms. Cheryl Lynne Storer of Cameron, North Carolina, is receiving the Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry. Her 3.97 GPA evidences her combination of academic talent and hard work. She has eamed membership in several honor societies at Campbell and has fulfilled admirably the expectations of the Presidential and Hartness Endowed Scholarships which she has held.
Cheryl is also a friendly individual with multiple interests and talents. She has been actively involved in a number of campus groups, including Campus Cmsade for Christ and the Baptist Student Union. She has also been active in the University's music program as a member of the Pep Band, the Wind Ensemble, and co-founder and co-director of the Campbell University Flute Choir.
Cheryl was a co-winner this year of the Faculty Award for Excellence in Biochemistry. She was accept ed into four Schools of Optometry and has chosen to attend the highly respected University of Alabama at Birmingham. ^arry Qoldston WomBk Mr. Womble of White Lake, North Carolina, has been selected to receive the 2004 Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award. Mr Womble is the president of Goldston's Beach, a popular White Lake resort. An active member of the community, Mr. Womble has served as a tmstee of Bladen County Hospital, as a member of the White Lake Town Council and on the local board of directors of North Carolina National Bank. He has also served as chief of the White Lake Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Womble is an active member of the Elizabethtown Baptist Church where he has served as a deacon and mem ber of the Finance Committee. In earlier years, he served as a member of the committee responsible for the relocation, planning and building of the Elizabethtown Baptist Church and pastor's home. An advocate of Christian higher education, Mr. Womble has established two Campbell University Divinity School scholarships. In addition, he is the recipient of the Presidential Medallion, one of Campbell's highest honors. Mr Womble currently serves as a tmstee on the Campbell University Board of Tmstees.

Tlie academic procession is led by the Commencement Marshal, carrying tlie otficial Mace of Campbell L'niversit>'. .Altliougli not as ornate as the tirst Mace presented by Queen Elizabetli I to Oxford University in 1589, the Campbell L'niversity Mace is steeped in tradition and purpose.
The Campbell University Mace, a gift to the university by the Board of Trustees, was designed by Jolui Satterfield of Greenville, North Carolina.
The design of the Mace incorporates features signifying the Christian purpose of Campbell L'niversity. Tlie Mace's boss is a Sphere topped by the Celtic Cross and sup ported bv six flanges. Tlie Celtic Cross represents the early and continuing faith of tlie Cliristians who settled tlie Cape Fear Region and who were instrumental in estab lishing Campbell I'niversity.
The Sphere represents the world which Campbell L'niversity is committed to serve, tlirougli sons and daughters of the alma mater, and the daily work of tlie faculty and staft of the university; Tlie flanges represent the support of friends, churches, foundations, institutions, alumni and tlie Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. Tlie seals within tlie tlanges represent the history of Campbell L'niversity since its inception in 1887 and are the autliority under which the L'niversity bestows degrees.
Originallv an instrument for battle, tlie Mace lias a fascinating histor> in academic ceremonies. In 1589. tlie first record of a Mace being awarded to a university occurred when Queen Elizabetli I visited Oxford L'niversity. .At a special convocation held in lier honor, tlie students, speaking in Latin, were lavish in tlieir praise and flattery of the Queen, pretending to love her. Tliey assumed she was unfamiliar with Latin. .As a gesture of her thanks. Queen Elizabetli I stood and gave an eloquent speech in flawless Latin and presented Oxford with lier royal Mace.
The second record of a Mace being presented to a university was ni 1629 when King Charles I presented his royal Mace to Cambridge. Tliereafter it became custom ary. in the British Isles and tlirougliout Europe, for tlie Mace to be used at all ceremonial academic occasions. In tlie L'nited States, tlie Mace came into use during tlie nineteenth century when academic ceremonies were modeled on European customs and became more elaborate.

Medieval instituticms of higher learning customarily were c^rated by mcMiastic orders where students, as well as their instructors, wore monk's habits. In 1321, the University of Coimbra (Portugal) required all bachelors, licentiates (masters), and doctors of theology to wear monastic gowns — the first such recorded injunction. It is still the custom of students and instructors at the ancient universities of the British Isles - Oxford. Edinburgh. Aberdeen, and St Andrews — to wear their gowns to lectures and in their daily afifairs. Originally, the hood was a head covering, the monk s tippet and was worn by holders of either a master's or a doctoral degree. When caps came into fashion during the fif teenth centurv'. the hoods were draped down tiie back and ornamented with rich silk or velvet linings and edgings. The cap was first conferred as a symbol of the master's degree and varied greatly in style frc«n institution to institution. Some were stiff, some soft, some square, and still others round. All were decorated with a tuft at the center, today's tassel is an elal^ration of that tuft. The mortarboard stvie, generally followed throughout the United States, was borrowed from Oxford Uni\'ersit\'. where the flat-topped cap is customarily worn by those holding the Master of Arts degree. In the United States, the practice of wearing academic dress dates from 1754, \^en King George II chartered King's College (now Columbia University) and transfenred the academic regulations from the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. Colonial colleges, however, rejected the scarlet robes of the English institutions in favor of black ones as preferred by Puritan clergy. During most of the nineteenth centur\; American colleges and universities had no standard style of academic dress. Only rarely did undergraduates wear gowns during c<*n- mencement exercises. Many faculty wore the garb of the English institutions where they received their degree, while others wore robes of their own, often eccentric, design. Few faculty wore hoods and mortarboards. These were assumed to be articles of ecclesiastical dress, mere appropriate for bishops than professors. In 1895. a cc«nmission of leading American educators, mostly from the Iv\' League colleges, was established to devise a standard for academic attire. As a result black was adopted as the standard for academic robes. Undergraduates were required to wear a simple, unadorned black robe with a mortarboard and black tassel. Candidates for the degree of Master of Axis were required to wear a simple robe with the sleeves cut through exposing the hands and lov/er arms. Holders of the doctorate were to wear full robes with full sleeves. Panels of velvet down the front and on chevrons appearing on the slee\'es gave them a more richly omamented appearance. The hoods of those receiving graduate degrees var\' in shape and size. The lai^er. more heavily decorated hood signifies the doctoral degree. The trimming around the edge of the hood varies in color and designates the particular discipline of the degree holder. The colors used in the satin linings are drawn, customarily, from the official colors of the granting institutic«i. The linings in hoods conferred by Campbell University are orange and black. The American Council on Education established official colors for academic fields and include: white for arts and letters; scarlet for theology or divinity; drab few business administration, commerce and accountancy; copper for economics; light blue for education; brown for fine arts; purple for law; lemon for library science; green fw medicine; silver gray for oratory; daik blue for philosophy; sage green for physic^ education; yellow-gold for science; citron for social science; and pink for music.
