INTRODUCTION

Central Railway Line is part of the exiting Railways Corporation network with total length of 2,707 Km; Central Line comprises of the following segments; DSM – - (840km), Tabora – (411km ) and Tabora – – (379km); kaliua – Mpanda (km 210)

Phase I of the construction of Central line starts from Dar es Salaam to Mwanza.  The first phase of Central line construction has 1,219Km, It will be executed in five lots as follows:- Lot 1: Dar es salaam- Morogoro This segment has length of 205 main line route Kilometers, crossing loops and station sidings of 95Km, Which makes a total of 300 track Kilometers.

Lot 2: Morogoro- makutupora This segment has length of 336 main line route Kilometers, crossing loops and station sidings of 86Km Which makes a total of 422 track Kilometers.

Lot 3: Makutupora-Tabora This segment has length a total of 376.5 track Kilometers (Main line route Kilometers are 294 Crossing/ siding loops of length 73.5 Km) Lot 4: Tabora- Total track Kilometers are 165.5 (Main line route Kilometers are 133 crossing/siding loops of 32.5 Kilometers)

Lot 5: Isaka – Mwanza The last lot in phase I has total of 311.25 track kilometers (main line route 249Km and crossing/siding Loops length of 62.25Km) PROJECT PROGRESS Lot 1: Dar es salaam - Morogoro.

The actual construction started in May, 2017 with contract duration of 30 months (02.05.17 to 01.11.2019).

Upto this May, 2018 total time lapse is 12 months and overall progress is (11%). INAENDELEA

Lot 2: Morogoro-Makutupora, The Contract for this lot was signed on 29th September, 2017 and the work started on 26th February, 2018. The project was officiated by H.E Dr. John Joseph Pombe Joseph Magufuli, the President of the United Republic of Tanzania on 14.03.2018 at Ihumwa, to mark start of its implementation that will span 36 months intil 25.02. 2021. FEATURES OF THE NEW RAILWAY The railway line is constructed standard adopting AREMA standards  Gauge is 1,435mm  Axle load 35T  Train length 2,000  Annual line capacity 17 million Tons  Passenger train speed 160 Kph  Freight train speed 120 Kph  Longest viaduct length 2.50 Km within Dar es salaam INAENDELEA

 Construction of three major stations Dar es salaam, Morogoro, Dodoma and two marshalling yards at Kwala (Pwani) and Ihumwa (Dodoma).

 Construction of 11 intermediate stations (Pugu, Soga, Ruvu, Ngerengere, Mkata, Kilosa, Kidete, Gulwe, Igandu, Bahi and makutupora)

 Electric train with ERTMS Level 2 na GSM-R signalling system  Fenced railway line with under/over passes and grade separated with major roads

 Concrete sleepers each weighing 280Kg

 Rail section of 120 LB/yd (UIC 60 = 60Kg/m) AVAILABLE OPPORTUNITIES

Employment in the ratio 80:20 Local:Foreign Direct 2,865 local employments recorded in number out of 3,167 in total equivalent to 90% Industries:- During the production of concrete sleepers, steel and cement industries will benefit etc Sub-contractors:- Construction and supply subcontractors have been availed opportunities to supply and hire equipments, earthworks and human necessities. CONT.,

 New 150 permanent employments are estimated for the first lot alone during commissioning in 2019.  New areas where the railway line will traverse will open up human development activities and settlements  Road maintenance efforts will decrease as heavy, bulky and long distance cargo will shift to the reliable and faster railway.  Prices of commodities in destination market will lower as 40% currently is due to transport.  The new railway will be even more environmental friendly as it will predominantly use electricity and conserve forex for importation of diesel. CONT.,

 Reduction in overall travel journeys example it takes 10 hrs between Dar es Salaam and Dodoma that will be reduced to 3 hrs. Has greatly contributed to direct and non- direct employments. 0

• Single track SGR line of 336 km , 86 km sidings • Eight stations ( Mkata, Kilosa, Kidete, Gulwe, Igandu, Dodoma, Bahi, Makutupora) • Control rooms • Workshop and Depot (At Km. 423+500, Ihumwa) including Equipments • Bridges, overpass and underpasses • Tunnels • Culverts • Signaling and Telecommunication • Centralized Traffic Control (CTC) Centre • Electrification and Overhead Catenary System

34 Morogoro – Dodoma – Makutupora SGR Line (Phase 2 | 336 km) Status

• The Contract for Phase 2 was signed on 29 September 2017 • Groundbreaking ceremony took place at Ihumwa/Dodoma on 14 March 2018 • Design works are ongoing • Mobilization to the Mobile Camps at Km. 211+000 and Km. 229+000 and the Main Camp at Km. 265+600 (Kilosa) has commenced. The Contractor will be bases in 2 Main Camps at Km. 265+600 (Kilosa) and Km.423+500 (Ihumwa) and will establish 8 Mobile Camps in total in various locations of the alignment • Access Roads works are ongoing • Topographical LIDAR Survey and Geotechnical Investigations works are ongoing
