THE AREA ADMINISTRATORS CORNER

Dear Members and Friends,

Some good news. My chest X ray was described as perfect so that makes me feel wonderful.

The Heritage Festival is over, and our display, in conjunction with that of the City Archivist, received favourable comments. Thanks to those who came to my assistance putting up the display, and those who helped by being part of the Group who were on duty at the Regal Shoppe.

I must have had a sudden rush of blood to the head as I decided it was about time I went through the Port Phillip Gazettes and made a note of events of interest to the district. It is turning out to be a bigger task than I thought, but I must say it is fascinating when you come across a record in 1844 when Annie Baxter's husband obtained a License to Depasture Stock. Lots of names are familiar. The poor old and young absconders did not stand much of a chance judging by the records telling of scars, moles, tattoos etc. Some were not at large for long.

Regards to all Marie Boyce Area Administrator

THE SECRETARY's CORNER

Dear Members,

The Warrnambool RSL has a coloured chart for naming Army Medals handed down in the family. I believe the chart also tells you why the medal was awarded.

Would all Country Members of AIGS Inc please address ALL correspondence going to the Library to Margaret Hookey. and request that it be passed to whatever section you require.

Margaret is our Country Liason Officer and to ensure we have the best possible service Margaret must know what comes in and out of the Melbourne Library.

Please encourage any letters that contain Warrnambool Branch AIGS Inc business to be addressed to PO Box 607, Warrnambool. Like Margaret I do not need any surprises as I need to have all correspondence in and out dealt with and listed prior to our monthly meetings.

Happy hunting, Irene Sheppard Secretary

BOOKS FOR SALE

Recently three new books on the history of the Warrnambool and districts have been published. Thelma Birrell has out a new book on the Bostock family titled 'Mariners -Merchants ... then Pioneers' a very impressive book on her ancestors and this part of Victoria. I believe a few copies of Thelma's previous publication 'People & Places, covering the period 1854-65 are still in stock. The second new book is 'A Special Survey, dealing with the Atkinson Special Survey of 1843. which included the township of Port Fairy.

The third book is 'Sliding Gunter' by our own Betty Beavis which is a collection of articles on life in early Warrnambool written under the nom-de-plume 'Sliding Gunter' by Thomas Osbourne and edited by Betty.

As well as these books we also have 'Death Notices From The Warrnambool Standard' on fiche and coming soon 'Death Notices From the Hamilton Spectator,.

Marie Boyce can provide further details such as price etc.
