They were carried 50 yards from the sea wall. Written by Margaret Perry. 1880 237 Photo showing the road from Lariggan to Tolcarne which was washed away on Thursday October 7, 1880. The boat builder was a Mr Warren, of Newlyn. On the left at the back is Bodilly's Mill, where the Western National Garage was built later. Also centre rear is the serpentine works which ceased in 1912 (Cornishman 15/3/1962). The storm burst over Mount’s Bay in the early morning. Directly after Alexandra Terrace the road was completely washed away, only enough remaining to allow people to pass in single file. At intervals along the road towards Newlyn, there were rents in the sea wall and large pieces of the road had been carried away. Just before Tolcarne Terrace, there were great fissures in the road, which was rendered almost impassable by great coping stones from the sea wall that had been deposited there by the storm.
