Highlights of the April 14, 2015, Board of Trustees Meeting

Moment of Silence A moment of silence was held in memory of Mena Abdo.

Mena Abdo was hired on August 5, 2014, as a teacher for the District. Mr. Abdo was a current staff member and taught engineering, math, and physics at Buena Park High School. Mr. Abdo passed away unexpectedly on March 11, 2015, at 34 years of age. A Celebration of Life service was held on Saturday, March 14, 2015, at the Church of Saint Verena and the Three Holy Youth in Orange, and grave side services were held at Forest Lawn in Cypress.

Sympathy and support were offered to the family and friends of Mena Abdo.

Commendations and Executive Director of Administrative Services Jennifer Williams introduced Recognitions Buena Park High School Principal and Freeway League President Jim Coombs. Mr. Coombs introduced Troy High School (TRHS) girls’ basketball coaches, Roger Anderson and Caryn Ito. The TRHS girls’ basketball team advanced to the Division 1A CIF Southern Section playoffs at Azusa Pacific University. Coach Anderson introduced the following TRHS students for recognition:Danielle Aiu, Jennifer Aquino, Tianna de la Paz, Samantha Huang, Kellyann Huey, Naomi Hunt, Lauren Ichiba, Kara Ito, Hope Kakihara, Rebecca Lazuka, Rebecca Lee, Allison Lorenzo, Cori Okada, Alyssa Reyes, Tala Reynoso, Brooke Sinek, Barbara Sitanggan.

Each of the honorees received a certificate of recognition from President Kilponen on behalf of the Board of Trustees.

Timely Information from Board President Barbara Kilponen shared information about an article in the the Board/Superintendent naming Student Board Member and student, Amanat Singh, as one of the Top 10 Artist from Orange County schools in Visual Arts and Film.

Public Hearing on Initial The District currently has a two-year contract with the School Proposal From California Employees Association (CSEA), which is in effect until June 30, 2015. Under School Employees the Rodda Act and the existing agreement, the negotiation process for a Association for Successor successor agreement begins with the employee organization submitting an Agreement initial collective bargaining proposal prior to the end of the agreement. The Rodda Act also requires that a public hearing take place to provide for public comment on the initial proposal from the employee organization.

CSEA President Frank Ramirez presented the proposal to the Board of Trustees.

President Kilponen declared a public hearing on the Initial Proposal from CSEA for Successor Agreement with the Fullerton Joint Union High School District. Hearing no comments, the public hearing was closed.

Declaration of Need for The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing requires public school Fully Qualified Educators districts to present annually to the governing board at a regularly-scheduled to Authorize the public meeting a “Declaration of Need for Fully Qualified Educators” in order Employment of Teachers to employ teachers who require an emergency permit. holding Emergency Permits/Credentials for the It was moved, seconded, and carried by unanimous vote (5-0) to adopt the 2015/16 School Year Declaration of Need for Fully Qualified Educators to authorize the employment of teachers holding emergency permits for the 2015/16 school year.

Superintendent Search Update Interim Superintendent Ken Stichter presented an update on the status of the superintendent search. The closing date for accepting applications was April 16, 2015. Following the screening process, Board Members will conduct interviews during May.

Mr. and Mrs. John Kang donated $100 in support of the Tennis Program at Fullerton Union High School.

Wells Fargo Foundation donated $240 in matching funds in support of the education of students at Fullerton Union High School.

Acceptance of Gifts Silicon Valley Community Foundation donated $1,000 in matching funds in (continued) support of the education of students at Sonora High School.

Mr. Randall Alexander donated $300 in support of the education of students at Sunny Hills High School.

Servants Catering donated $150 in support of the education of students at Fullerton Union High School.

Mr. David Poll donated $1,500 in support of the Dave Wittry Memorial Programming Contest at Troy High School.

Mr. and Mrs. Donald Hsu donated $200 in support of the Dave Wittry Memorial Programming contest at Troy High School.

Mr. Sudip Rithik Datta donated $100 in support of the Dave Wittry Memorial Programming contest at Troy High School.

Mr. Daniel Wittry donated $250 in support of the Dave Wittry Memorial Programming Contest at Troy High School.

Fullerton Union High School PTSA donated $8,000 for the purchase of graphing calculators in support of the education of students at Fullerton Union High School.

Zurich North America donated computer monitors and cables in support of the education of students at Fullerton Union High School.

The Hull Family Trust donated $500 in support of the Mary L. Blanton Memorial Scholarship foundation at .

The Boeing Company Political Action Gift Match Program donated $154 in matching funds in support of the education of students at Fullerton Union High School.

Southern Wine and Spirits donated bottles of water in support of the education of students at Fullerton Union High School.

Masterlink Sausage & Meats Company donated 200 sausages in support of the education of students at Fullerton Union High School.

Mr. and Mrs. Olivarria donated 2000 hot dog buns in support of the education of students at Fullerton Union High School.

WE’RE PROUD THAT…

… the BPHS Girls’ Varsity Tennis Team was selected as a CIF-Southern Section Academic Award winner for the 2014/2015 school year . Congratulations to the tennis team and coaching staff.

… FUHS seniors Harrison Duran and Ryan O’Sullivan participated in the 2015 Sustainability Showcase held at California State University, Fullerton. Ryan spoke on his research on bio-fouling and placed 1st in the high school presentations. Harrison spoke on sustaining biodiversity. This is the second year in a row that a FUHS student placed 1st among high school presenters.

… LHHS Heritage students placed 1st in the Orange County History Day contest and qualified to advance to the State competition at William Jessup University in Rocklin, California on May 8 - 9, 2015.

… the LSHS Adult Transition Program held their 2nd annual “Beach” Prom on campus on Wednesday, April 22, 2015. Students enjoyed participating in dancing, eating great food, picture-taking, and socializing.

… LVHS student Alexis Salzer was recognized by the Fullerton Sunrise Rotary as Student of the Month.

… SOHS IB Coordinator Robin Oliver helped write and implement the Equity Grant for the IB Program for the 2014/15 school year.

… SHHS physical education instructor Julian Smilowitz and the Physical Education Department, along with 180 students have partnered with California State University, Fullerton to assist at the Special Needs Games on Friday, May 1, 2015.

… TRHS Computer Programming students competed at the Code Quest programming contest at Lockheed Martin on April 18, 2015. The Advanced Team and Novice Team both placed 1st in their category. Congratulations to the advisor Don Allen and all of the students.
