(2011) ID COMMENTS: A medium-sized, red, brown, and gray Noctuid. The ground color of the forewings is reddish brown; the transverse lines, orbicular, and reniform are all grayish to whitish, with the spots somewhat darker inside. A strong basal black dash and a black median dash in the fold between the antemedian and postmedian lines are distinctive, together with the broad, pale gray subterminal band; the outer edge of this band is bounded by a white line with a well-defined w-mark between veins M3 and Cu1. Lacanobia subjuncta has similar basal and median dashes but lacks the pale subterminal band; Spirameter lutra has a similar subterminal band but lacks the median dash (McCabe, 1980) DISTRIBUTION: North Carolina records come from the northern mountains FLIGHT COMMENT: Univoltine, with adults flying in June and July in North Carolina HABITAT: According to McCabe (1980), grandis is "a species of the Transitional and Canadian Life Zones". All of our records come from sites above 4,500 ft in elevation, one from a high elevation forest and one from a mountain bog. FOOD: Polyphagous on many families of woody plants, including alder, blueberry, chery, dogwood, poplar, and willow (Wagner et al., 2011). Also recorded on Burdock. OBSERVATION_METHODS: Comes to lights NATURAL HERITAGE PROGRAM RANKS: GNR S1S2 STATE PROTECTION: Has no legal protection, although permits are required to collect it on state parks and other public lands. COMMENTS: This species is common in the North (Wagner et al., 2011), but it appears to be strongly disjunct in our area and possibly confined to high elevation summits; we have records from only two sites in this state. Although apparently not a host- plant specialist, the range of plants used in North Carolina is unknown. If confined to cool, moist, high elevation habitats in North Carolina, it is likely to be vulnerable to the effects of global warming. Although more needs to be learned about its distribution within the state, we recommend that it be listed as Significantly Rare in North Carolina. Entomol. 98(6): 2100Ð2106 (2005) ABSTRACT The phenology of Lacanobia subjuncta (Grote & Robinson) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) was investigated in 30 apple orchards in central Washington state and northeastern Oregon from 1998 to 2001 (57 total orchard-yr). Adult captures in pheromone-baited traps were Þt to a Weibull distribution to model emergence of the Þrst and second generations. Initial capture of Þrst generation adults was observed at 216.2 Ϯ 2.6 degree-days (DD) (mean Ϯ SEM) from 1 March by using a base temperature of 6.7ЊC. The model predicted that ßight was 5 and 95% complete by 240 and 700 degree-days (DD), respectively. Monitoring of oviposition and hatch was used to establish a protandry plus preoviposition degree-day requirement of 160.0 Ϯ 7.7 DD, as well as to provide data to describe the entire hatch period. Egg hatch was 5 and 95% complete by 395 and 630 DD, respectively. The start of the second ßight was observed at 1217.1 Ϯ 8.3 DD by using an upper threshold for development of 32ЊC and a horizontal cutoff. The model indicated that the second ßight was 5 and 95% complete by 1220 and 1690 DD, respectively. Second generation hatch was 5 and 95% complete by 1440 and 1740 DD, respectively. A discussion of the potential uses of these detailed phenology data in optimizing management strategies is presented.

(E.) roseonitens roseonitens (Oberthür, 1887). A new subspecies of Xylena exsoleta (Linneaus, 1758), Xylena exsoleta maltensis ssp. n., is established. The literature on Maltese Noctuoidea is reviewed and erronuousely reported species are indicated.

Larvae have been recorded on Douglas-fir, fir, juniper, larch, pine (lodgepole pine, Scots pine), and spruce. Early instar larvae feed inside the needles of new growth and later instars feed on older foliage. Outbreaks of P. flammea in pine plantations in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe have caused damage to thousands of acres and resulted in significant tree mortality. In the UK, adults are present from March through May. Twenty to eighty year old pine monocultures are especially at risk, and lodgepole pine, common in the western U.S., has been attacked when planted in Scotland (see Bradshaw et al. 1983; Sukovata et al. 2003). Panolis flammea is a member of the Noctuidae (tribe Hadenini), the family of moths (Lepidoptera) with the largest number of total species and also the most pest species.

INTRODUCTION The fauna of noctuoid moths (the families Erebidae and Noctuidae) of Kazakhstan is still poorly studied. Only the fauna of West Kazakhstan has been studied satisfactorily (Gorbunov 2011). On the faunas of other parts of the country, only fragmentary data are published (Lederer, 1853; 1855; Aibasov & Zhdanko 1982; Hacker & Peks 1990; Lehmann et al. 1998; Benedek & Bálint 2009; 2013; Korb 2013). In contrast to the West Kazakhstan, the fauna of noctuid moths of East Kazakhstan was studied inadequately.

    WISCONSIN ENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETY SPECIAL PUBLICATION No. 6 JUNE 2018 CHECKLIST OF WISCONSIN MOTHS (Superfamilies Mimallonoidea, Drepanoidea, Lasiocampoidea, Bombycoidea, Geometroidea, and Noctuoidea) Leslie A. Johnson3 ABSTRACT A total of 1284 species representing the thirteen families comprising the present checklist have been documented in Wisconsin, including 293 species of Geometridae, 252 species of Erebidae and 584 species of Noctuidae. Distributions are summarized using the six major natural divisions of Wisconsin; adult flight periods and statuses within the state are also reported. Examples of Wisconsin’s diverse native habitat types in each of the natural divisions have been systematically inventoried, and species associated with specialized habitats such as peatland, prairie, barrens and dunes are listed. INTRODUCTION This list is an updated version of the Wisconsin moth checklist by Ferge & Balogh (2000). A considerable amount of new information from has been accumulated in the 18 years since that initial publication. Over sixty species have been added, bringing the total to 1284 in the thirteen families comprising this checklist. These families are estimated to comprise approximately one-half of the state’s total moth fauna. Historical records of Wisconsin moths are relatively meager. Checklists including Wisconsin moths were compiled by Hoy (1883), Rauterberg (1900), Fernekes (1906) and Muttkowski (1907). Hoy's list was restricted to Racine County, the others to Milwaukee County. Records from these publications are of historical interest, but unfortunately few verifiable voucher specimens exist. Unverifiable identifications and minimal label data associated with older museum specimens limit the usefulness of this information. Covell (1970) compiled records of 222 Geometridae species, based on his examination of specimens representing at least 30 counties.

    Notes on the Scottish Macro-moth List, 2015 This list aims to include every species of macro-moth reliably recorded in Scotland, with an assessment of its Scottish status, as guidance for observers contributing to the National Moth Recording Scheme (NMRS). It updates and amends the previous lists of 2009, 2011, 2012 & 2014. The requirement for inclusion on this checklist is a minimum of one record that is beyond reasonable doubt. Plausible but unproven species are relegated to an appendix, awaiting confirmation or further records. Unlikely species and known errors are omitted altogether, even if published records exist. Note that inclusion in the Scottish Invertebrate Records Index (SIRI) does not imply credibility. At one time or another, virtually every macro-moth on the British list has been reported from Scotland. Many of these claims are almost certainly misidentifications or other errors, including name confusion. However, because the County Moth Recorder (CMR) has the final say, dubious Scottish records for some unlikely species appear in the NMRS dataset. A modern complication involves the unwitting transportation of moths inside the traps of visiting lepidopterists. Then on the first night of their stay they record a species never seen before or afterwards by the local observers. Various such instances are known or suspected, including three for my own vice-county of Banffshire. Surprising species found in visitors’ traps the first time they are used here should always be regarded with caution. Clerical slips – the wrong scientific name scribbled in a notebook – have long caused confusion. An even greater modern problem involves errors when computerising the data.

Dennis Profantl ABSTRACT A survey of Lepidoptera was conducted in 1987 and 1988 on Beaver Island, Lake Michigan. When combined with a 1930 survey of the Beaver Island Archipelago, 757 species from 41 families have now been recorded from these islands. Only one study has been published on the Lepidoptera of Beaver Island and the surrounding islands of Garden, High, Hog, Whiskey, Squaw, Trout, Gull, and Hat (Moore 1930). The present study has produced a more complete inventory of lepi­ dopteran species on Beaver Island. Collecting was done in a variety of habitats using several different light sources.
