The Provisional Population Totals - Paper I of 1981 and Supplement of Lakshadweep was published after announcing the provisional population on 23rd March, 1981. The Final Population Figures of this Union Territory were released in October, 1982 through Paper 2 of 19'31. This paper consists of the Union Territory population and Scheduled Tribe population by persons~ males and females And also the rlisablad pODulation. The booklet - Paper 1 of 1982, is the third in the series. The Final results of 1981 Census uhich are ready nOIJ and have not been r91eased so far ere brought out through this paper.
The Paper 1 of 1982 presents the Primary Census Abstract of total population as well as the Special Primary Census Abstract f8r SC/ST population. \Jhlle presentinq this paper efforts ha\Je been made to prize together the principal results of the earlier censuses. The data of the islands have been presented disregardinu the rural/urban status. However, much analysis of data have not been marle in this paper. The detailed report - Part II A & 8 General Population Tab19s and Primary Lensus Abstract relating to these data will be published shortly.

INTRODUCTORY NOTE ....,._....._ ...... -,~ The Paper - 1 of 1982 presents the Primary Census Abstract of total population and Special Primary Census Abstract for SC/ST Population. The Primary Census Abstract of the entire population provides data on area, number of occupied residential houses, number of households, total popu lation,Scheduled ~astB/Scheduled Tribe population, literate and educated persons, main worke~s by broad industrial categories viz. cul~ivator, agricultural labourer. household industry and other workers, margin~l workers and non-work~rs. The special Primary Census Abstract for ~cheduled caste and scheduled tribe population also gives all the details relating to Se/sT population as provided for the total popu lation excepting the data on area and residential houses. No caste has been scheduled in relation to the Union Territory of Lakshadweep. There~ore, the presentation of special Primary Census Abstract for SC/ST is limited to the 5T population only.

2.2 • .?ch_~c;I_u~l_e_ct _C_a_s_~e___ a_n_d_ ~~_c_h_e~~tu~Le_d __T_rJP,B. According to the schedulad castes and scheduled tribes list (Modification order 1956) the inhabitants of Lakshadweep who and b6th of whose parents were born in those islands are treated as scheduled tribes. There is only one tribe in this territory which has no specific name. No cast~ has besn scheduled in relation to the Union Territ~ry of Lakshadweep.
2.3. fu_e.f}_ The total area figure of the U.T/district is the geographical area furnished by the Surveyor General of India, whereas the area figures of the i~lands and that of urban ar~a of the U.T/district are based on the data given by the Lakshadweep administration which is the land use area. Ths total rural area of the U.T/district is derived by deducting urban area from the geographical area. Hence, the total/rural areas of the tahsils uill not add up to the U.T/distrirt are3S. The uninhabited islands have not been shoun in the table. Hou8ver, the areas of these islands have been included in the rural areas of attached tahsils. -:3:-

A ilcensus housell is a building or part of a building having a separate main entrance from the roae or com~on court-yord or staircase etc. used or recognised as a separat8 unit. A 'Household' is a group of persons who commonly live together and would take their meals from a common kitchen. An 'occupied residential house' may be used wholly as a dwelling or it ~ay
~ be put to other uses also besides beinq used as a dwelling.
2. 5. Li_t_el'_a_t_E!. A person who can both read and I.,Jrite IJith understanding in anyone -language is to be treated as literate. A perS0n who can merely read but cannot urite is not literate. It is not necessary that a person who is literate should hDve received formal education and should have passed any minimum educational standard. Children up to the age of 4 years have been treated as illiterate irrespective of their attending school or not.

2.7. n.aj._~;Lo_r.Js..El!. A person who has prima'rily I.Jorked for the major p~:riod of a year is a main lJorker. By major period of the year, it is intenr!ed to (:J,lsure that the parson has worked for 183 days or mora or in other words worked for six months or more, the reference period being one year preceding the date of enuMeration. 2. B. t!..§_r_q.i_n_a_l __W_9_r_k_~: A person who has worked for less than six months or 183 days but worked occasionally during the year before enumeration is considered as marginal lJorker.
2. 9. ~N~D_-:-JJ_0--E_~ A person who has not worked at all during preceding one year from the date of enumeration is a non-worker.

3.1 ••Cul_Vy_a_t_0-.F_ A person is a cultivator if he or she is angaged either as -:5:-- employer, single worker or family worker in cultivation of land own9d or held from govern!~ent or held from privats psrsons or institutions for payment in money, kind or share. Cultivation includes sup3I'vision or direction of cultivation.
3.2. _A...9.FJ._c_LJ~l_t.u..r_a_J.:.. J;.a_b_o_~~ A person wno works in any person's la~d for wages in money, kind or share is regarded as agricultural labourer. He or she has no risk in cultivation but he or she merely works in another person's land for wages. An agricultural labourer has no ri~ht to lease or contract on land on which he/she works.
3.3. !1_o~'-:l_s_e..r_o_l_d_J.!'_d_~t_r_y_ It is an industry which relates to production or processing or
servicing or repairinq conducted by the head of hou~ehold himself or herself or' by the members of the household at home or \,Iithin the village in rural areas and only within the premises of the house where the house hold lives in the urban areas. A large proportion of the workers in a household industry sh~ulrl consist of members of the household inclu dinD hoad. The industry should nut be run on a scale of registered factory which would qualify or has to be registered under the Indian ... :6:-
Factories Act.
3 .. 4. 'p_Sl!..§LJ~_0.F.l<_e.l'~ All workers i.e., those who have be8n engaged in economic activities during the last one year~ who are not cultivators or agricultural labourers or in household industry are tother workers'. The type of the lJork that comes under this category includes factory
workers, plantation workers, those in trade and commerce 9 business, transport~ mining, constructions, all government servants, muni~ipal employees etc. In fact, all those who worked in the fiold of economic activity other than cultivator, agricultural labour or household industry are 'other workers'. Of these 10 islands are inhabited and 17 are uninhabited. Because of the geographical isolation and for administrative convenience the· islands have been grouped into four and each group forms 8 Tahsil. Thus, there are four tahsils viz.
