Archaeological Megalithic monument dating to the Neolithic c.3500-1800BC. interest Identification uncertain. Originally a circular mound that has been excavated twice, once in 1877 and more recently in 1970. Name & location of La Hougue Bie archaeological site La Route de la Hougue Bie Grouville No. 51 Date of assessment April 2007 Date of designation February 2008
Designation pSSI 100m radius from passage entrance AAP for surrounding fields G829, 830, 831, 833, 834, 835 & 436 (aka S1003) Archaeological Neolithic passage grave with 12th century chapel and WWII interest structures.
Earthen barrow enshrining a chambered stone tomb, or passage grave, c4000BC. The Neolithic passage grave of La Hougue Bie belongs to a group of large megalithic monuments which occur along the Atlantic façade of Europe from Iberia to the British Isles and southern Scandinavia. It has long been recognised as one of the largest and best preserved monuments of its type.
The cruciform passage grave was discovered and excavated in 1924 and is in an excellent state of preservation. The passage and chamber have a combined length of 18m making it one of the largest passage graves in western Europe, whilst the cairn, 12m in height and 55m in diameter, is more than twice the size of any other in the Channel Islands. The passage and chamber display many distinct local developments in terms of their construction features such as internal compartments and lateral chamber, orientation and the associated material culture. Features such as the ‘sanctuary’ at the western end of the chamber have no clear parallels anywhere in the Armorican region, making it unique in this context. The surrounding area is of prehistoric ritual significance.
The mound was Christianised by the building of an early medieval chapel on its summit - one of the most dramatic examples of this practice to be seen. This is a rare example of medieval chapels surviving in Jersey and contains important architectural details including round-headed arches and a crypt with ambulatory.
In 1750 the Neo-Gothic Prince’s Tower was built alongside the chapel. This was demolished in 1924. A hotel was built on the site in 1850. During the Second World War, various German Occupation structures were added to the site including a watchtower and Battalion headquarters bunker.
The site is of extraordinary importance, both in Jersey and internationally.

Archaeological Early Bronze Age habitation eroding from cliff at Le Petit Port; a interest mound, stones and Neolithic pottery found across the headland. It is likely that stratified deposits of some size and complexity lie sealed beneath the sand and that a large scale prehistoric settlement site exists undisturbed. Includes La Sergenté corbelled passage grave c3500BC.
