A Caring VBS Community Guidelines for Schools, Youth Activities, and Synagogue Communal Events Regarding Kashrut and Off-site Birthday Celebrations April 2010 Dear VBS Families, Valley Beth Shalom is a dynamic community that reveres and follows Jewish tradition. For the VBS schools and synagogue programs, the values of Kashrut (awareness of food), Derech Eretz (how we treat one another) and Kehillah Kedoshah (being included in a sacred community) are of upmost importance. Our children learn about these values and experience them daily at VBS. We want to ensure that everyone is aware of these guidelines so that we are consistent and respectful in fulfilling these goals together. Kashrut: Bringing food into the VBS facility for group consumption (events, holiday celebrations, potlucks, etc.) When a group of the community organizes a potluck activity or meal at VBS, there are guidelines to maintain the quality and standard of Kashrut we hold for our synagogue and schools. • Packaged foods must have a Kashrut symbol (heksher) on the package. Common hekshers found on packaging are: Visit a website such as www.kosherquest.org for more information about kosher symbols. • Foods ordered must come from a certified Kosher restaurant, caterer, deli, or vendor. • All fresh, canned or frozen fruits and vegetables, juices, milk, or soft drinks are acceptable. • Many cheese and cheese products are kosher. Look at the packaging for a heksher. • Bakery products must come from approved bakeries, or have a heksher on the package. • See attached list of approved restaurants, markets, and bakeries. Prepared items brought from home: Valley Beth Shalom will allow certain foods prepared at home to be brought in to enhance participation in the community experience as long as the following Kashrut guidelines are followed carefully and completely. • Home-prepared foods brought into VBS must be dairy, fish (no shell fish) or vegetarian. • No meat or chicken may be brought into VBS. • Use only Kosher ingredients. Check for Kosher symbols. • Prepare and serve all foods in containers made of disposable plastic, glass, or metal. • Serve with metal or new plastic utensils. Disposable pans and utensils are preferred. • The synagogue ovens, refrigerators, or utensils may not be used to store, warm or serve foods prepared at home for VBS events. To learn more about Kashrut or if you have questions about the VBS Kosher policies call the VBS Kosher hotline at (818) 530-4009. Birthday Parties Off Campus Birthdays are a highlight for children and are a wonderful way to celebrate community. Off-site birthday celebrations planned for children in VBS schools are asked to keep in mind the inclusion of fellow students, respecting the sanctity of Shabbat and the food that is served. These guidelines will help in your birthday preparations to ensure that all the participants can celebrate with you on this special day. • Personal birthday parties outside of school that involve classmates should take place after school, after Shabbat (Friday Sundown to Saturday sundown) or on Sundays. Birthday parties should not take place during Shabbat. • Food served at these birthday parties should be dairy/pareve or kosher meat. • If more than 50% of the students in a class are invited to a party, please invite the entire class of boys or girls. Thank you for our cooperation and partnership in creating a caring VBS community. Rabbi Ed Feinstein Rabbi Harold M.
