DECEMBER 10, 2017 SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT DESERTS… PLACES OF LIFE OR DEATH?

The second Advent Reconciliation Service held at St. Susanna will be at 7:00pm on Tuesday, December 12th.

The Advent season is a time to get ready and prepare our hearts for the celebration of the birth of Christ. Doing an Advent study is a chance to build up in anticipation of the grand event, and to dive deeper into the Scriptures and the Christmas story all month long. 9 December 10, 2017 Second Sunday of Advent (B) Is 40:1–5, 9–11 2 Pt 3:8–14 Mk 1:1-8

Waiting Expectantly Yet waiting can also be an exciting and busy ost of us are not good at waiting. We want time, like a bride and groom preparing for their Mthings right away and would rather arrive just wedding. There is no time to waste, since the date is on time than stand around uselessly. Few things are as approaching and there is so much to do in order for annoying as waiting in a doctor’s office, a government everything to be prepared perfectly. Advent waiting office, or being stuck in traffic. should be more like this expectant waiting. John the Baptist was sent to point Piece: Virgin and Child Enthroned toward Christ and invite the people to their Between Sts. John the Baptist and St. Jerome, 1510 wedding with God. Thus John preached preparation, conversion, and setting aside everything that would distract people from getting the heart ready for Jesus. Loving, active planning was as necessary for those who listened to John the Baptist as it is for us. This means going up the mountain and into the desert. Set aside normal distractions and dedicate more time to think about Christ, preparing our hearts and minds for the big day of his arrival. Advent isn’t a nervous time of sitting around and hoping the line goes quickly. It is an active, engaged, and hopeful anticipation of one we eagerly await. —Fr. Mark Haydu, LC

For Reflection What distractions am I setting aside to make this Advent time like my little wedding preparation? The Church invites me to a special time of repentance, fasting, and almsgiving. How is it going?

The Lord...is patient with you, not wishing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. (2 Peter 3:9)
