Indiana Extracts from Periodicals

Roger Lawton and Natalie Burriss

To widen its knowledge of genealogical information for Indiana, the Indiana Historical Society takes part in an exchange with genealogical and historical societies across the country. The IHS sends out The Hoosier Genealogist: Connections in return for receiving the publications of other organizations. A volunteer with the IHS reads through the incoming publications to find listings of people with Indiana connections. The following genealogical data comes from the publications of three separate organizations in Oklahoma: the Oklahoma Genealogical Society in , the Garfield County Genealogists in Enid, and the Southwest Oklahoma Genealogical Society in Lawton. The names and issues of the periodicals are listed with the data, along with names of articles, authors where specified, and the year of publication. All data is transcribed exactly as it appears in the publications. Where information is needed for clarity, the authors have inserted it in brackets. All periodical issues listed below are available for further research in the Serials Section at the Indiana State Library in Indianapolis.

JOHN W. BREMER is director of music in the Southwest State Normal School, Weatherford, Oklahoma. To one who is in any way conversant with the training and experience of Professor Bremer in his profession, the above statement tells much of the completeness and efficiency of the music department of that institution for Professor Bremer came to his duties here splendidly equipped, both in talent and in training, for the duties of his office. Professor Bremer was born in Essen, Germany, in the Rhine Province, on November 25, 1874, and he is the son of William and Gertrude (Ferlmann) Bremer, both German born. The father was a native of the Rhine Province, born in 1837, and he died in Essen, Germany, in 1896. The mother was born in Westphalia, Germany, in 1841, and her death occurred at the family home in Essen in 1892. William Bremer was for years the superintendent of a force of several hundred men in one of the large smelting mill” in his province, and was a man of prominence in his field of activities. He was liberal in polities, and he served in the wars of 1864, 1866 and in the War of 1870–71, receiving the Iron Cross in recognition of bravery in action during the latter war. He was the father of two children, Joseph H., who died in 1901, in LaGrange, Indiana, at the age of thirty-three years, and who had come to America in 1891; and John W. of this review. John W. Bremer received excellent educational advantages in Germany. When he had completed a course at the Pedagogical Seminary, Odenkirchen, he entered the Music Conservatory of Cologne and studied there until 1895. He had decided ere that time that his profession should be music, and after his graduation from Cologne he engaged in private work in his profession at Duisburg, Germany, until 1897. In that year he came to LaGrange, Indiana, to which place his brother had preceded him, and he was [a] teacher of music there for six years, meeting with an appreciable degree of success in the work. In 1903 Professor Bremer went to Goshen, Indiana, continuing there in his chosen work until February, 1908, when he was called to Weatherford to fill his present position as director of music of the Southwestern State Normal School. Professor Bremer is a democrat. His fraternal affiliations are confined to the Goshen Lodge Ancient Free and Accepted Masons. He was married in Elkhart, Indiana, in 1905, to Miss Alma Oberholtzer, daughter of Jacob Oberholtzer, now deceased. Three children have been born to them, John Victor, born July 31, 1906; Joseph Jacob, born February 14, 1909, and Gertrude Clara, born March 8, 1911.

[The paragraph below appears in the middle of the article listed above. Much of the article consists of reminiscences of the childhood of Turressa Wilson.]

September 19, 1952 I Turressa Belle (Bolt) Wilson was born Jan 2, 1869 near Pittsburrow, a small Town 15 miles N.W. of Indianapolis, In. My father’s name was Thomas Jefferson Bolt. I don’t know about his nationality but his Mother was born and raised in England. He, my father was a Union Solider [sic] in the Civil (so called) war. My mother’s name was Lucretia Saloma (Sallee) BOLT. Her people claim some French connection. Their name (they said) was originally, Sal La, but later was Sallee. They were married during the Civil War (so called). Four children were born to them; two during the war, my brother, James Lloyd was born Jan 27, 1867, lacking 25 Days being 2 years my senior. Two little sisters our senior were born during the War, the older died while my folks were moving around to avoid the fighting, the other at birth.

Volume 39, No. 4 (June 2015–August 2015) “Frederick Army Air Field, Frederick, Tillman Co., OK” pages 154–56

Frederick Army Airfield was opened 23 Sep 1942, during the first year of World War II, with four hard-surfaced runways. It was an advanced twin-engine pilot training field. During the years it was active, many military pilots were trained there. The airfield was inactivated 31 Oct 1945. It was declared surplus and turned over to the Army Corps of Engineers on 21 Sep 1946. It was eventually discharged to the War Assets Administration and became a civil airport. It was then known as Frederick Municipal Airport, and now known as Frederick Regional Airport. Aviation Cadet Class 43-K was the sixth class to complete training at Frederick Army Air Field, win their wings, and be commissioned as pilots in the Army Air Forces. They were the first class to have a book, like a school annual, published. The book contains photos of all the commanding personnel and members of the class, along with other photos of activities on the base. At the back is a list of all of the class members with their home addresses. This book was given to us by the family of Opal Kirkpatrick, deceased. It can be found in the Family History Room of the Lawton Public Library in the World War II section.
