Thomas J. Bryant, S.J., was born in Chicago on November 11, 1904. After studies at Quigley Preparatory Seminary and St. Mary's of the Lake in Mundelein, Illinois, he entered the Society of Jesus at Florissant, Missouri in January of 1928. Father Bryant received a B.A. from Xavier University in Cincinnati in 1930 and an M.A. from St. Louis University in 1932. Following these studies, Father Bryant was ordained a priest on June 23, 1938. He then completed Theology, and received an S.T.L. from St. Louis University in 1939. After completing his studies, Father Bryant made his tertianship at Parma, Ohio. He then taught at St. Xavier High School from 1940-1943 and was a Chaplain in the army from 1943-1946, later promoted to Captain. He began teaching theology at Loyola University of Chicago in 1946. He retired from active teaching in 1975. An accomplished amateur photographer, Father Bryant was the advisor for the Loyolan (the student yearbook) for several years. He was also an avid traveller, who, as an associate member of the Catholic Biblical Society of America, made three trips to the Middle East for on-site inspections of archeological finds.
