1. Now it’s time to organize the logistics sector & to defend Universal Service in East Asia . UNI-Apro East Asian Postal Unions forum reviewed future policy and UNI P&L strategy

7th UNI-Apro East Asian Postal Unions Forum, which held on 20-21 May in , Japan, reviewed and discussed how to organize logistics sector and to defend universal service in postal services in the East Asia.

All the participants in the forum were devoted to listen and interested in the presentations on the endangered Universal Postal Service by Brother Yoneda, JPGU and development of logistics business in Asia and the Pacific region by Prof. Ishihara, Tokai University.

Brother Yamaguchi, President of JPGU and Chairperson of UNI-Apro Post & Logistics Sector Committee, thanked colleagues in East Asian Postal Unions for their support extended to postal union members in Japan during the merger process to the JPGU after the privatization of in last October. He spoke out that we need to expand scale of our organization with organizing logistics industry as a starter.

Each union representative from JPGU, KPWU, CPWU and UPOE made their own country reports. A special report on the postal privatization was presented by Mr. Chiba, CE of .

Brother Ito, Director of UNI-Apro P&L, introduced the development of Post and Logistics Sector and trade union organizing in the Asia-Pacific region. He encouraged postal unions at the forum to initiate organizing in logistics industry as well as post offices.

After the forum, overseas participants visited postal facilities in Tokyo such as New Tokyo and Yoyogi Post Office and had a chance to meet with managers of Japan Post.

Prior to the main forum, management committee members gathered and reviewed the UNI Post and Logistics strategic plan for 2008-2011.

UNI-Apro Post & Logistics / APPC Joint Seminar held in Bangkok on 3-4 June 8, 2008

UNI-Apro Post & Logistics/APPC Joint Seminar had hold in Bangkok on 3-4 June, where participated 14 colleagues(10 male, 4 female) from Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam.

Brother Roh Joon-hwan, Coordinator for Post & Logistics, UNI-Apro, mentioned that this seminar will give union leaders an opportunity to study current postal issues and to understand importance of labor-management cooperation at the opening.

Mr. Somchai Reopanichkul, Director of APPU(Asia Pacific Postal Union), welcomed all the participants and introduced UPU and APPU as well as International dimension of Post at his session.

During two day course, Mr. Chandra, lecturer, explained Business Excellence-Business Dimension of Post and , Parcel & Logistics Management, Mr. Sinha, lecturer, touched upon Operational Excellence-Operational Dimension of Post. Also Mr. Cho, Consultant, introduced Reforms of including brief RFID technology on the postal services and Mr. Washim, lecturer, explained Human Resource Management.

Most of participants had an active interaction and discussed various issues like how to make post profitable at the seminar. They learned on skills and issues in postal services in particular and thanked all the lecturers of APPC on their contribution.

This joint seminar has initiated in 1999 sponsored by the UNI-Japan Post and around 120 trade unionists took the courses.

UNI-Apro Post & Logistics/SEWU-THP Joint Seminar took place in Pattaya in 5-6 June

Followed above seminar, UNI-Apro Post & Logistics/SEWU-THP Joint Seminar held in Pattaya where joined all the overseas participants for APPC seminar and around 30 Thailand Postal Union and UNI-TLC colleagues under the theme of Globalization and Post & Logistics Services.

Brother Thanaracht, Executive Vice President, SEWU-THP and Brother Chaisith, President of UNI-TLC, welcomed all the participants and expected to get involved for bring successful result at the opening.

After the opening, Brother Roh Joon-hwan, Coordinator for Post & Logistics Sector, UNI-Apro, has presented Globalization and P & L Services in Asia and the Pacific focusing on the current situation of Korea Post.

Ms. Thientip, Executive Vice President, , introduced postal services in Thailand including overview of Thailand Postal Services, Globalization & Impact on Postal Services and Logistics Business in Thailand Post.

All the participants had a group discussion on the impact of globalization on the postal services and each sub regional groups of South Asia, East Asia, ASEAN and SEWU- THP made a presentation on this theme.

UNI-Apro P & L /ASEAN & SAARC Leaders Meeting held in Bangkok on 7th June 12, 2008

In conjunction with two joint seminars, UNI-Apro P & L /ASEAN & SAARC Leaders Meeting held in the meeting room of SEWU-THP on 7th June.

Brother Ito Eiichi, Director of UNI-Apro Post and Logistics, stressed the importance of organizing in logistics sector in future as UNI Postal Global Union Conference decided priority of organizing in Athens in April 2007 and explained overview of UNI-Apro P & L and Organising CEPL(, Express, Parcel and Logistics) cases in Asia and Pacific at his session.

Brother Boonsruang, Vice President of SEWU-THP and Sister Sirima Buena, UNI-TLC Coordinator made a presentation on the ASEAN overview and integration process. Each representative from ASEAN(Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam) and SAARC(India, Nepal and Sri Lanka) trade unions, had reported union’s current situation and strategy for 2008-2010.

Finally ASEAN and SAARC trade union leaders divided into two groups and discussed on the developing a strategic plan for UNI Post & Logistics for 2008-2011.
