Quest is a dramatic work for younger players. It is intended to portray a noble, mystical pursuit of some great conquest or accomplishment. It is full of driving percussion, resolving tone clusters, dramatic brass writing and spectacular tutti musical statements, all of which are within the range and capabilities of younger or less experienced bands.

The slower, softer middle portion of the work features easy passages for solo oboe, solo bassoon and solo piccolo (all of which are safely cued in other instruments.) This portion of the work affords a moment of mysterious repose before the faster, highly dramatic music returns. The work ends with a last-minute modulation from d minor to C major.

This work is a great choice for excellent middle school bands or smaller high school bands. Piccolo, second oboe, second bassoon, contra-alto clarinet and third trombone and double bass are all optional, so the work can be played with bands with limited instrumentation.
