Morning Announcements at Whitesville Central School

The regular morning announcements at WCS have undergone a major uplift this year. Mr. Koehler's 21st Century Tech class is now composing the announcements through live video production. These live video announcements are 100% produced and run by our students. While expanding their knowledge of digital video production, students are getting a hands on, real world opportunity to produce these live announcements each morning. They are learning about many elements of production such as picture and sound quality, green-screening, lighting, transitions, and public speaking. Interested in catching a live showing? Check out the school web page under Staff Links. There you will find a live link and a link for archived productions. Thanks for supporting our students in this new 21st century experience!

Welcome to WCS

Hello, my name is Mr. Alan Ackley. I am teaching Middle/High School Resource Room and a 15:1 Math class.

Prior to working at Whitesville Central School, I worked for Greater Southern Tier BOCES for three years at the Wildwood Campus in Hornell and Corning Painted Post High School. In 2008, I graduated from Wellsville High School. In 2013, I graduated from Fredonia State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education with a Math concentration. In 2017, I graduated from Nazareth College with a Master’s Degree in Inclusive Adolescence with a Math concentration.

I am excited to be working in a school district surrounded by great faculty, staff, and students.

Hello! My name is Ms. George and I am the new Physical Education Teacher here at Whitesville CSD. This is my first year as a teacher and I am very excited to spend it with all of the wonderful students here at Whitesville!

I started my college career at Monroe Community College where I majored in physical education and graduated with my Associates Degree in 2015. I was fortunate enough to play softball at the collegiate level during my time at MCC. After graduating from MCC I transferred to SUNY Cortland. I graduated in May 2017 earning my Bachelor’s degree in physical education.

I was born and raised in Portville, NY. My parents still reside there. I often go home and visit them on the weekends!

Hello! My name is Miss Whittaker and I am the new BOCES Speech-Language Pathologist here at Whitesville Central School District! This is my first year as an SLP, although I have experience working with individuals in schools, rehabilitation clinics and hospitals. I cannot be more excited to start my career with such a wonderful and caring community!

I attended the State University of New York at Fredonia, where I graduated in May 2017 with my Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology.

In my spare time, I enjoy spending time outdoors. I like to hike, camp, take walks with my dog, kayak, and read outside. I enjoy spending time and traveling with my family.

I can’t wait to share my love of language with my students and am so honored to be a part of this community!

A message from Superintendent Sanders…

A Great Loss

As I’m sure most of you are aware, our Whitesville community lost a wonderful, dedicated, funny and creative teacher at the start of the school year. Mr. Greg Cotton taught math to all of our 8th through 12th grade students, but most of all he taught all of us to laugh and see the joy in each day. Our students dedicated their spirit week to Mr. Cotton this year, knowing that he was the one who always created excitement with his special outfits and antics throughout the school year. The students also dedicated a Red Oak tree to Mr. Cotton in a memorial ceremony that took place on Wednesday, September 27th. We will miss Mr. Cotton greatly and will carry on his loving and caring spirit throughout the year and beyond.

Capital Project Vote

Thank you to all of our community members who came out to vote for our proposed capital improvement project on Tuesday, September 26th. The proposal passed with 63 yes and 17 no votes. Our work will now begin with the architects in planning the details of the project that will then go to the State Education Department for approval. That process could take from 8 months to a year to be completed. After that, the project will go out to bid to local contractors and the work will begin. We are looking for a few community members interested in sitting on the planning committee for the next step of the process.

After School Program

We have been fortunate to be able to sustain limited after school programming for the coming year. As you know, our ACCORD 21st Century After School grant was not continued with the last round of NYS grant funding. We are hoping that through ACCORD’s continued grant writing efforts, it will return next year. In the meantime K-4th graders have a great opportunity to participate in after school activities with Mrs. Tina Latterell and staff. They will continue a similar schedule of recreation, homework, crafts, STEAM, games, etc. We will also have several trips for roller skating and bowling throughout the year.

Lego Robotics

As part of our efforts to integrate more Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) within the curriculum and after school programming, we are part of the CABOCES Southern Tier Lego League. Ten middle school students are meeting two days per week to design, build and program Lego robots to solve multiple challenges on a 4x8 challenge mat. Each year, FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics introduces a challenge for students to solve. This year the challenge is Hydro Dynamics. Students must solve a real world problem in their community or beyond about the water that we use every day. They must research and present their research to a panel of judges at the Lego tournament taking place at Houghton College on November 18th. FIRST Robotics is considered “Sports for the Mind” and it is every bit as competitive as any sporting event that I’ve ever witnessed. I’m excited to see what our students will come up with.

Superintendent Sanders’ message continued…..

Parent Teacher Conferences

This year parent teacher conferences will take place on Monday, November 20th and we will offer times to meet with your child’s teacher through the afternoon and early evening. Conferences will be scheduled for all K-4 students and those failing any classes in 5th-12th grade. Any parent wishing to schedule a conference for any other students can call 607-356-3301 ext. 234 or 235. PRINCIPAL EMERY’S MESSAGE…………….

September was a tough month at WCS. Our beloved high school math teacher, Mr. Cotton, passed away suddenly leaving the Whitesville faculty, staff, and students shocked and heavy hearted with sadness. Mr, Cotton will forever be part of the WCS family and will not be forgotten. Our student council is dedicating this year’s Spirit Week in his honor. Check our Twitter account for pictures.

Fire Drills, Lock Down Drills, and Emergency Evacuation Drills oh my! Whitesville’s administration is dedicated to keeping everyone safe at WCS. We will continue to practice our fire drills, lock down drills and an evacuation drill for the 2017-18 school year. Safety of every student and employees is our #1 priority!

Character at WCS – Whitesville Elementary kicked off its Breakfast Club on September 13th. This year we are revealing our inner SUPERHERO. My SUPER POWER is KINDNESS. Everyone has a SUPERPOWER, what is yours? For September we broke down the “S” in SUPERHERO and it stands for SERVICE. Superheroes have a strong moral code and simply cannot help but serve; serve with a smile. What are ways you can serve in your home or community?

Congratulations to our soccer teams! You make us all very proud! Keep up the great work! Thank you fans for your positive cheering on the sidelines!

Take care and always live Happy, Healthy, Safe, and Strong! Mrs. Tammy Emery
