Let Go and Let God: The Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time By Laura Scanlan As we all work to become Missionary Disciples as the Sons and Daughters of God, today’s readings are not necessarily encouraging. Jeremiah was called to be God’s Prophet, even before he was born. We are called to be God’s prophet (spreading the Good News) by right of our Bapsm. God informs Jeremiah that the task will not be easy, but that God is there with him – making him strong no maer what happens. God also promises us that he will be with us always.

St. Paul’s leer to the Corinthians does give us some encouragement. With love we can do anything. In everything we do, we must do it with love. We may have many spiritual gi s given to us by God but if we do not have love these gi s will mean nothing. This love is totally unfailing and self-giving. Without it we are nothing.

The Gospel tells us about Jesus’ first experience of spreading the Good News. At first the people thought how great Jesus was and were amazed of the words “that came out of His mouth.” Then reality set in and because He was the carpenter’s son their thoughts turned to ridicule. At the me of Jesus, it was the son’s responsibility to follow in his father’s footsteps. It was the expectaon of society at that me to go no further. His father was a carpenter, so he was to be a carpenter and his son was to be a carpenter, etc. No one at that me was expected to do anything more. It is not like today where parents hope that their children will do beer than they did. So, the people could not accept Jesus and his teachings because that was not his expected life’s work. Jesus was just a carpenter and who was he to say to the people, “Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.” Jesus responds to them by telling them that “no prophet is accepted in his own nave place.” Jesus connues to tell them that individuals (Genles) in the past were saved before the Jews. Their fury pushed them to want to throw Jesus off a cliff. Although they were following tradion, it certainly was not love.

So, what do we do? Should we give up because we may be rejected or ridiculed? No, we need to connue to spread the Good News and to do it with love because God is always with us and we are Sons and Daughters of God. Let Go and let God! Page 8 St. John XXIII—Redford February 3, 2019

Simple and Effecve Ways To Share Your Catholic Faith With Others ü If someone has a misguided belief as to what the Church teaches, clear it up for him/her. ü Tithe. It helps you set good spiritual and material priories and makes you more grateful to God. ü Care for your aged relaves as best you can…and for other aged people. ü Visit themichigancatholic.org. It keeps you linked to the local church. ü Read other Catholic literature regularly. Bring it up in conversaon. ü Be part of the Evangelizaon Team in our parish. Contact any team member listed on page 8. ü Dress appropriately, and with dignity. As a Chrisan, you represent Christ, not the culture. ü Walk with people in their sufferings. ü Use a window/bumper scker to promote the faith. ü Call evil by name. “Be not afraid” is menoned 153 mes in the Bible in one expression or another. It is the most menoned phrase in the Bible.

Why Do We Do that—Catholic Life Explained Queson: My neighbor is just beginning to explore the Catholic faith but was raised agnosc. I grew up believing in God, praying, and aending Mass. How does one start from scratch as an adult to develop a relaonship with God?

Answer: Start on a personal level! How did you and your neighbor become friends? How did you begin to discuss such a personal topic as faith? Communicaon, spending me together, and geng to know each other are essenal to forming the bonds of a relaonship. Personal prayer is essenal to our relaonship with God. We can't be close to someone we don't know! Invite your friend to explore the stories of Jesus in the Bible. Introduce them to the lives of the saints, especially ones you think they might be interested in. Your neighbor might also have quesons about the Catholic faith that you don't know how to answer. If your friend hasn't yet enrolled in RCIA classes, invite them to Mass at our parish. Introduce your friend to Laura Scanlan our pastoral associate to make a connecon. Personal support can be helpful as well, especially if few of your neighbor's current friends are praccing their faith. Connect your neighbor to other people in our parish living their faith well. The good examples of other faithful people could help your neighbor to feel welcomed and supported. Our Church is vibrant and alive! Page 10 St. John XXIII—Redford February 3, 2019

Stewardship Reflecon How do I know if the Time, Talent and Treasure I offer God in grateful return is “enough?” What is the measure? St. Paul tells us in the Second Reading today — the “measure” is the love that we put into each of these aspects of our lives. “If I have all faith so as to move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away everything I own and hand my body over so that I may boast but do not have love, I gain nothing.” God is not a er a parcular number. What He wants us to give over to Him is our very selves. Real love is not a senment. Real love is manifested in living a virtuous life. We read later in St. Paul’s leer that real love takes strength: it is paent, kind, humble, other-centered, truth-seeking and long-suffering. Love is the heroic giving of oneself even when it is uncomfortable; especially then. Love looks like Jesus. It lives like Jesus. Somemes, living like Jesus is difficult. We see this in the Gospel Reading today where we find Jesus in acon, preaching in the synagogue in His hometown. He speaks truth to the people He loves, the ones He grew up with and shared His early days with. How do they respond? They are filled with fury and run Him out of town, intent on throwing Him from a cliff! Yet Jesus is undeterred. He passes right through them and presses forward with the mission His Father has entrusted to Him. We are called to live with this same strength and determinaon, fueled by the power of love and by gratude for all God has given us.
