St. Andrew’s On-the-Sound Episcopal Church December 2018 Soundings

The Rectors Reckonings

MERRY CHRISTMAS… Oops, we’re not supposed to say that yet. It’s not that there’s a war on Christmas, but we, in the church, are engaged in a struggle to keep Christmas for Christmas. Somewhere along the line we’ve lost a sense of times and seasons. There used to be a time when we would look forward to the arrival of summer and the first ripe tomatoes. Now we can find tomatoes, or dim imitations of them, in the grocery year-round. In fact, the pale imitations of tomatoes we find in the grocery in January are the sort which are sold in July. In losing the wait for the first tomato of Summer, we’ve lost the experience of tomatoes in general. So it is with Christmas. Catalogs, carols and decorations begin to appear before Halloween and become so dominant that by the time the Holy Day arrives we’re ready to scream if we hear “Pa-rum-pa-pum-pum” one more time. By Christmas Day we’re ready for it all to be over. This is the heart of the church’s struggle. Christmas, though it is the shortest of our seasons, begins with Christmas Day and extends (it should be no surprise) for twelve days. As with the arrival of any baby, it should be a time of celebration and wonder. There are also stories to remember, from shepherds to wise men; stories which reveal to us the surprising and unexpected love of God. This is and will remain a struggle for us all, if it’s not lost in the Christmas rush. Try to hold a little place in your heart, a space in which to remember that what is coming is not something which ends in four weeks, but the coming of a joy which extends forever. Here’s a prayer for the current season, shared with us by Beth High: In this Advent of expectation In this Advent of expectation draw us together in unity, draw us together in mission, that our praise and worship that the hope within might echo in these walls might be the song we sing and also through our lives. and the melody of our lives.

In this Advent of expectation draw us together in service, that the path we follow might lead us from a stable to a glimpse of eternity. Amen.

Episcopal Youth Community

On November 2-4, two of our high school youths- Mairead Benson and Abby Dell and myself-Stephanie Rieman along with other high school youths and adults from our diocese were in Fayetteville, NC for The Episcopal Diocese of East Carolina’s first Sr. High Fall Break partnering with the United Methodist Disaster Recovery team there. Our theme for the weekend was “Do Justice, Love Mercy, Walk Humbly: Micah 6:8”. We moved 2.5 tons water, helped load school furniture and supplies for a school who lost everything, learned about Designing Station and all they do for families in need, and helped at a home where it was being gutted from Hurricane Florence. This home and many other homes were impacted by Hurricane Matthew and Hurricane Florence which were a 100 weeks a part.

On November 16-18, ten of our middle and high school youth attended Fall Conference at Trinity Center. This year’s theme was “Shine your LIGHT”! Serving on Team this year for this event were Mairead Benson, Abby Dell, Allie Earnhart, and Tracy Hanson (adult team/transporting youth). St. Andrew’s Preschool News “God our Father, we thank you for our many blessings. Amen” (one of our preschool prayers)

In the month of November, we ask the children to decorate a turkey feather to be used for our preschool Thanksgiving window in the church benefitting Good Shepherd Center. On that feather we ask them to fill in the following blank, “I am thankful for ______.” Their answers are precious. Our students are thankful for waffles, cake, sparkly things, cars, soap, tigers, and snakes, but they are also thankful for their families, pets, food, and God.

So I thought it was my turn to fill in the blank. I am thankful for…..wonderful teachers, the sweetest students ever and their amazing families, and YOU, this dedicated church community which supports the preschool ministry so wholeheartedly. Our preschool’s blessings are many. THANK YOU!

From the Music Room

Hi St. Andrew's On-the-Sound Congregation, I'm the newest kid on the block and now serving in the Music Department as organist and directors of the Adult, Children and Bell Choirs. I'm excited about all the musical possibilities here at the church and my first step is trying to meet as many people as I can! So, if I haven't met you yet, I thought I might share a couple of things. Background I grew up in Pittsburgh, PA in a family that loved music. One of my most favorite Christmas gifts I received when I was 4 years old was an upright toy piano. I spent hours in the basement pounding on it, and I think it basically launched my musical journey of lessons throughout my elementary and high school years. Along the way, I became infatuated with pipe organs and got to practice on one of the oldest organ in the city on which folksong writer Stephen Foster regularly played. When I started college, I decided to take organs lesson, and after a few weeks, decided to make it and Church Ministry my major focus. Since then I have served in various churches in Michigan, Ohio and most recently, Minnesota. I was privileged to grow up in a strong Christian home and can’t remember a day that didn’t begin with family devotions around the breakfast table. Although I have been involved in a variety of different types of churches, my faith tradition is Lutheran. I am married to my wife Jeannie and am the father of five adult children who are spread all over the place, from Washington, D.C all the way to Seattle, WA. I recently celebrated the weddings of two of my daughters and the birth of my first grandchild, Theo! It now has been a year since I retired from full-time ministry, moved from the bitter cold of Minnesota to start a new life in Wilmington! Unsure about my next step of ministry, I’ve spent this past year prayerfully discerning what God was calling me to do. Then, Richard, a rector from a local Episcopal church called me to sub on the organ, and here we are! Looking down the road As I stated above, I am excited about the worship and music ministries at St. Andrew’s! There is such a rich foundation upon which to build and I’m thankful to follow such gifted musicians who have served so faithfully in these last years. I sense also there are a considerable number of musically-gifted people who want to share their gifts of singing and playing instruments and bells to enhance our worship life. It will be in the next couple of months where I will try to connect and encourage them to take a chance and join others in “making a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth!” (Psalm98:4)

Upcoming musical opportunities ADULTS Christmas Eve Choir – this is a wonderful “first-step” for those who might want to have a short-term, 5 weeks choir experience. We rehearse at 6:00 p.m. on Thursdays as we learn some beautiful Christmas carols and anthems to be sung at our evening Christmas services. Adult Choir (including high school youth) – this is an opportunity for those who want to commit to a weekly rehearsal (Thursday evenings) to learn anthems, psalms and special liturgical setting to deepen the worship primarily at the 11:15 service. And just as important, the Adult Choir is a place to make connections and build a strong caring network of friends! (We’re also going to explore how we might expand choir opportunities for those who attend the 9:00 service.) Prior choir experience is not necessary! Anyone with a willing heart and a desire to sing can join us! Bell Choir – this is a special opportunity to learn how to play handbells and provide wonderful music experience for worshippers at the 9:00 and 11:15 worship services. We hoping to start the Bell Choir rehearsals after the first of year on Wednesday evenings. Special Music – this is an opportunity to share your musical talent with a solo, duet, or small ensemble. I will be especially on the lookout for those who can’t commit to a regular weekly rehearsal and yet, still want to sing or play in worship. CHILDREN Children’s Choir – right now, we are offering an hour-long Children’s Music Time on Wednesday evenings at 5:00 p.m. It is a time for kids to play games, learn some simple Christmas carols, dance, have snacks and a short devotional. (Parents are encouraged to join in as well!) We’re using these weeks as a time to assess and discern how to build the program in the new year. Will we have one choir to include all ages or will we break it down into a young preschool & kindergarten choir as well as an older elementary one? If so, when would be the best time to rehearse on Wednesday evening? (If you have any thoughts about it, please don’t hesitate to write or call me!) In the meantime, if you have any thoughts or concerns about how we can build the music ministries at St. Andrews, please don’t hesitate to stop me in the hallways of the church or come up to the organ after services or give me a call! And please, pray for all of us as we build and grow our choirs and music ministries! In Him, Mark Hellmann

MARK YOUR CALENDAR... GIFTS FOR LIFE

As we prepare for a season of gift-giving, consider alternative gift giving through Episcopal Relief and Development’s Gifts for Life program, a powerful way to make an impact by helping to fight poverty, hunger and disease worldwide. The person in whose honor you are giving will receive either an e-card or a mailed card with information about your donation and the program. Another fun idea is to have the cards mailed to your address and give them with a small token for your friends and loved ones. Consider gifting: -A goat to a family and goat cheese and crackers to someone who takes special care of your “kids” -A flock of chickens to a community and a wine glass to the “chicks” in your life who listen to you whine and help you do life -A share of a community garden and a rosemary plant to someone who’s helped you to grow this year

Catalogs are available online at episcopalrelief.org/gifts.

During Advent, we anticipate the coming of Christ, anWo event that awakens our deepest desires and longings. The Society of St. John the Evangelist invites us to respond to a daily meditation with images and prayers that speak to our hearts and be part of a global Advent Calendar that brings us together in communion. The result is a crowd-sourced global advent calendar that creates a sense of worldwide communion and wonder. Follow St. Andrew’s on Facebook and be sure to add your own pictures and comments to our posts each day of Advent as we journey towards Christmas together. We lost dreams, loved ones, jobs or hope. Join us as we gather to acknowledge grief and to encounter Christ’s promised presence. Friday, December 21st, 6:30 pm
