PRESENTED BY SANPARKS BACKGROUND

ndividuals of species that live free-roaming herds in relative open spaces face all the stresses of ecological processes including intra-specific competition with other herd members for food, dominance and mates, inter-specific competition Iwith other species for resources such as food and water, exposure to environmental variation such as droughts and floods, exposure to pathogens and bacteria associated with many diseases old and emerging and surviving numerous occasions when predators attack herds. These processes form the basis of natural selection that leads to robust genetic integrity especially if populations are relatively large. Natural selection processes thus produce healthy and resilience individuals when they were part of free-roaming herds exposed to all the elements of nature and the whims of ecological processes. Such individuals are also the basis from which good examples of specimens of a species, for example a trophy animal, originates. Good trophy animals developing in natural systems do require large populations and large areas. This allows further exposure to a wider range of environmental pressures as well as competition, predation and exposure to diseases. SANParks are offering individuals that originate from free-roaming herds living in open spaces that created the conditions to produce healthy and robust individuals that can enhance wildlife economic objectives for a specific property.
