October 12, 2015, Issue 469 Motor Mouths: Country In Detroit “Detroit: Cars and Rock ‘n’ Roll. Not a bad combo.” Nice, Kid Rock. But what are either without radio? Motor City call letters including WCSX, WRIF, WOMC, WKQI, WJR, WWWW and WYCD have become famous over the years with help from Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Steve Kostan and Arthur Penhallow, National Radio Hall of Famers Dick Purtan, J.P. McCarthy, Steve Dahl and Howard Stern, and Country Radio Hall of Famer Dr. Don Carpenter, to name a few. Not a bad pedigree. PPM market No. 12 is changing, though, especially with respect to Country. For starters, CBS Radio’s WYCD got its first direct challenger in four years when Cumulus Adult Hits WDRQ adopted the company’s Nash brand in late 2013 (Breaking News 12/13/13). And just a few weeks ago Carpenter ended his 10- year WYCD morning run, which led to other on-air changes at the station (CAT 8/5). Country Aircheck details some of those and checks WDRQ’s progress here. • Any Golden Ears Still Exist?
BRETT ELDREDGE Drunk On Your Love Atlantic (WMN) CONTENTS Any Golden Ears Still Exist? — Charts Dear Readers; In an article in RadioInfo, the following important question was raised...the article was written by Duane Doobie. Here is an excerpt…. You know what’s really missing in today’s contemporary music radio scene? It was an element of the industry that played a key role in radio claiming “ownership” of popular music culture (one of my favorite obsessions) during the many decades that the medium actually occupied that lofty position within the kingdom of the cool. The answer: Broadcasters with a well-earned reputation for having “golden ears.” When this business was clicking on all cylinders, every format of music radio was populated by a healthy smattering of well-known and widely- respected programmers (PDs, MDs, jocks) who were considered by their colleagues in both the radio and record ends of the scene to have “golden ears.” For the uninitiated, that means they were able to spot a hit at first-listening a mile away. Obviously they were not always right – but for the most part they were close to the mark, at least PAGE 2-4 collectively. They were invaluable “bell cows” giving the industry direction. They didn’t NEED “research.” They WERE research. — Chart Breakouts These magical people were the front-line of radio’s penetration into the bubbling, churning, seminal brew of the unfiltered energy field that constitutes the base-level from which all definition, categorization and the hierarchy of PAGE 5-6 “hits” rises in what we consider to be the popular music/cultural scene.

OBJECT OF YOUR REJECTION: THE SYMBOLIC ANNIHILATION AND RECUPERATION OF QUEER IDENTITIES IN COUNTRY MUSIC A Thesis Presented for the Master of Arts Southern Studies The University of Mississippi Lauren Veline May 2017 Copyright © 2017 by Lauren Veline All rights reserved ABSTRACT This thesis addresses the double-marginalization of white queers living in Bible Belt communities by examining the symbolic annihilation of queer identities in country music. Bible Belt queers face unique obstacles and have different needs than queer communities elsewhere due to the cultural context of their communities. The urban-centric (“metronormative”) standards of queer identity and visibility presented in the media do not translate to their lived experiences. Moreover, while white, non-urban southerners possess a source of popular-media expression through country music, queer identities are noticeably absent. The invisibility of Bible Belt queers in the media perpetuates a cycle of hostility and sexual stigma that negatively affects queer individuals, most notably those living in the American South.

  • Straight...No Chaser
BRETT ELDREDGE Drunk On Your Love Atlantic (WMN) CONTENTS Straight...No Chaser — Charts Dear Readers; Here it is, straight to the point. The CDX business is supported by the distribution of music to every country radio station in the U.S. Our “Mother-Ship” business is distributing songs to decision-makers and we do that in every way YOU (radio) have indicated you like to preview and play new music. HOWEVER, the CDX TRACtion monitoring system doesn’t know if we distributed the single or not when it calculates detections and ranks them into our chart. The chart’s greatest strength is its impartiality. We created it as a resource for everyone. You have access to a wealth of clear and constant data, and the best part of it all is it allows you to make the best decisions for your stations.
