Demille was a seminal founder of Hollywood whose films were frequently denigrated by critics for lacking historical verisimilitude. For example, Pauline Kael claimed that DeMille had ”falsified history more than anybody else” (Reed 1971: 367). Others argued that he never let ”historical fact stand in the way of a good yarn” (Hogg 1998: 39) and that ”historical authenticity usually took second place to delirious spectacle” (Andrew 1989: 74). Indeed, most ”film historians regard De Mille with disdain” (Bowers 1982: 689)and tended to turn away in embarrassment because ”De Mille had pretensions of being a historian” (Thomas 1975: 266). Even Cecil’s niece Agnes de Mille (1990: 185) diplomatically referred to his approach as ”liberal.” Dates, sequences, geography, and character bent to his needs.” Likewise, James Card (1994: 215) claimed that: ”DeMille was famous for using historical fact only when it suited his purposes. His mother kept the family together by establishing a 2 theater company. Cecil joined the company as an actor. He continued working in his mother's theater company as an actor and a manager until nineteen thirteen. That year, he joined Jesse L. Lasky and Samuel Goldfish to form the Jesse L. Lasky Feature Play Company. Goldfish later changed his name to Samuel Goldwyn. I had already been struck by Novello’s astonishingly luminous close-ups in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Lodger (1926), and knew of his enduring association with the war anthem ‘Keep the Home Fires Burning’, which he co-wrote in 1914, but this advertisement for a 1923 fantasy film directed by Adrian Brunel, seemed to resonate with these aspects, and suggest so much more. The main text of the advertisement simply read: ‘‘Readers of Picture Show! Do you admire IVOR NOVELLO (ENGLAND’S APOLLO) Ask the manager of your local cinema when he is showing him in “The Man Without Desire!”’.i The bracketed reference was a little tongue-in-cheek (fitting the tone of some of Brunel’s productions) in suggesting that if its readers didn’t recognise the star’s name, they might be more familiar with this mythically grandiose alter-ego, as if removing the mask of a superhero.

The Thirties, according to Willard Van Dyke, Director of the Department of Film, will consist of 39 pictures, representing some of the richest creative talent in American cinema at a time that has been called "the dear, dead days not beyond recall." Two years ago the Museum presented The Thirties, U.S.A., Part I, covering the first half of the decade. The films being shown now as Part II were made from 1935 ^^ 193 '• Among the pictures to be shown are: Frank Capra's "Lost Horizon"; Paul Muni in "The Life of Emile Zola," the Story of a Northern Jew's lynching in the South; the great thriller "Night Must Fall," an adaptation of the Emlyn Williams play starring Robert Montgomery; and "The Good Earth," a spectacle film in black and white, from Pearl Buck's popular novel, for which Luise Rainer won her second Academy Award, with Paul Muni in the starring role. The latter part of the thirties was characterized by further achievements in the musical film, largely due to the talents of Fred Astaire, who with Ginger Rogers starred in "Top Hat," and "Shall We Dance," both of which are in the retrospective. The most important contributions to the annals of films made in the thirties was the series of "snowball" comedies Hollywood turned out at a time of grim, economic hardships.
