Shawn Gilbert has served as Midland University’s head women’s basketball coach since 2013. In seven seasons, Gilbert has produced a 89-122 record while playing in the always competitive Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC). In 2018-19, the Warriors posted a 15-14 overall record, the first winning season under Gilbert and the program’s first since the 2003-04 season (16-13). The Warriors enjoyed a Top-25 national ranking for much of the season as they defeated three ranked opponents along the way. At Midland, Gilbert has coached 21 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Scholar Athletes, including Maddie Egr, who became the first player in program history to earn College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American honors in 2019. All six of Gilbert’s teams have earned NAIA All-Academic team honors. Gilbert came to Midland after serving four seasons (2009-13) as an Administrative Assistant and Video Coordinator at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on Connie Yori’s staff. COACHING HISTORY He also served as the Connie Yori Summer Camp Director. With Gilbert’s help, the Cornhuskers 1996-2000 North Platte Community College enjoyed their best season in program history in 2009-10 when they went 32-2 overall and 16-2 2000-2007 Mount Mercy University in conference play, earning them their first Big 12 regular season title. 2009-2012 University of Nebraska - Assistant RECORD BEFORE MIDLAND 82-113 Prior to his time at UNL, Gilbert was the head coach at Mount Mercy College (Iowa) from 2000-2007. Under Gilbert’s guidance, the Mustangs advanced to the Midwest-Classic 2013-14 Midland University 8-6-6 Conference Tournament championship game in 2005 and 2007. In 2007, the Mustangs enjoyed 2014-15 Midland University 13-5-1 their best season in program history to that point as they went 21-9 and finished the reason 2015-16 Midland University 9-7-2 2016-17 Midland University 15-5-0 ranked in the Top-25. 2017-18 Midland University 14-2-3 Gilbert coached three NAIA All-Americans and 11 Academic All-Americans while at MMC. 2018-19 Midland University 14-3-4 He also produced 15-All-Conference selections and 45 Academic All-Conference players. 2019-20 Midland University 17-2-2 Before going to MMC, Gilbert was the head coach at Mid Plains Community College in OVERALL - 17 SEASONS 171-235 MIDLAND - 7 SEASONS 89-122 North Platte, Nebraska from 1996-2000. Gilbert was named the Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference (NCCAC) Coach of the Year in 2000. Gilbert earned his Bachelor’s degree in Physical and Health Education from the University of Nebraska-Kearney in 1991. He and his wife, Carrie, reside in Omaha and have three children. Oliver Drake has served as Midland University’s head men’s basketball coach since August of 2015. In five seasons at Midland, Drake has coached to a 73-74 overall record and a 42-54 mark in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC). In 2016-17, Drake guided the Warriors to a second-place finish in the GPAC regular season standings and earned an at-large bid to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Division II National Championship Tournament, the fifth appearance in program history. Prior to coming to Midland, Drake served as the head basketball coach at Ashford University (Iowa) for five seasons (2010-15). While at Ashford, Drake guided the Saints to a 108- 55 overall record as they won one Midwest Collegiate Conference (MCC) title and made three appearances in the NAIA Division II National Championship Tournament. Drake was named the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Coach of the Year following the 2013-14 season when Ashford advanced to the Sweet 16. Beyond the court, Drake has a strong commitment to success in the classroom. In his nine COACHING HISTORY years as a head coach, Drake has had 12 athletes earn NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors, including 2010-11 Ashford University 23-11 seven at Midland. 2011-12 Ashford University 20-11 Drake is an active member of several coaching organizations. He served on the NAIA 2012-13 Ashford University 20-11 2013-14 Ashford University 23-10 Championship Committee from 2013-15 and has been a member of the NABC-NAIA National 2014-15 Ashford University 22-12 Committee since 2014, where he is currently serving as president. 2015-16 Midland University 16-14 In the summer of 2018, Drake was selected to be a member of the coaching staff for USA 2016-17 Midland University 21-10 Basketball’s U18 National team. He served as a court coach for training camp in Colorado 2017-18 Midland University 16-14 2018-19 Midland University 10-19 Springs, Colorado along with other court coaches, including Mike Brey (University of Notre 2019-20 Midland University 10-17 Dame), Joe Dooley (East Carolina University), and Chuck Moore (Richard Bland College). Head OVERALL - 10 SEASONS 181-129 coach of the U18 team was University of Kansas’s Bill Self. Also on staff were Danny Manning MIDLAND - 5 SEASONS 73-74 (Wake Forest University) and Anthony Grant (University of Dayton). A native of Neillsville, Wisconsin, Drake attended the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education/Adaptive Physical Education in 2002. He also earned a Master’s Degree in Education from in 2008. Drake’s wife, Kristen, is the Alumni Coordinator and Events Specialist in the Alumni Department at Midland. The Drake’s live in Fremont with their two children, Sebastian and Stella.
