OKAY- I'll submit a photo... Life for me was simpler back in the late 40's as you can see back then everything was in black and white. And, yes, I did really fish in those days! This is a picture of my little brother, Scott. And if I think back then- it was his turn to hold the fish for a picture my dad took. We had 31 pearch on that stringer all caught on the Grand Haven pier in Lake Michigan with cane poles an' bobbers My brother and I fished with 2 of the greatest fisherman in the world during those early years of (B&W) baggy jeans, turned up cuffs and tennis shoes. Yup...my dad and grandfather were the greatest fishermen in our world back then. Bob McKeon Desert Fly Casters

Additional information catch me, Joe Miller at: [email protected] Arizona Game and Fish Department Aquatics Chief Chris Cantrell gave a great presentation on the Departments Plans for Coldwater Fishing throughout the state, with a full rundown on the various categories under which trout management and stockings are conducted. Those categories range from Intensive managed with frequent stockings to support put and take fishing, all the way up to Quality Waters like Canyon creek and to Blue Ribbon Waters like Lees Ferry and Becker Lake. All are managed with particular care to the needs of angling on that water. All of the plans will appear on-line on the Department’s Web- Site in early August with a request for Public comments and feedback. Chris also gave a brief summary of proposed Regulation changes, and highlighted those for the Lees Ferry Rainbow Trout to reduce the harvest and extend the lower walk in boundary and for the Frye Reservoir Gila Trout Fishery to minimize harvest of those fish. The DFC Board has voted to support those changes and will send a letter expressing that support to the Arizona Game and Fish Commission before they consider the proposal. The 4 FRI Rim Country EIS Scoping Comments Period is underway (See DFC July Newsletter for detailed Report). This EIS covers some 1.24 Million Acres across the Mogollon Rim, with many of our favorite streams slated for Stream Habitat Restoration to support their resident fish and aquatic species. The DFC Board has voted to submit comments during this scoping period, and those supportive comments urging the US Forest Service to help improve our fisheries and the valuable waters we have in the Rim Country are now being drafted and will be reported to the DFC members. Comments on this Proposed Action should be submitted by August 11. CARP IN THE PARK...

by Vince Deadmond Let’s go Carp'n. If you are looking for a fly fishing carp adventure close to home Vince Deadmond, "The Fly Fishing you probably have a canal in your neighborhood. The very thing that allowed Hardware Guy", is co-owner of Best Phoenix to flourish, is controlled water. Diverted and controlled water in canals Hardware in Apache Junction, AZ. was first practiced by the Hohokam Indians, later by the pioneers, and more He is an enthusiastic, caffeniated, recently by business and government. When you look at a map of the greater fly fisher in search of a really good cookie. His fly fishing stories are Phoenix area you will be amazed at the many miles of canals in every part of published on the web, in local the valley. I would like to share with you one centrally located carp destina- newspapers and magazines. His tion. Kiwanis Park in Tempe, AZ off of Mill and Baseline has been a good steady stories tangle family, friends, and place to find carp. If you have a closer canal in your neighborhood, do yourself fly lines. a favor and walk or ride the banks with a bike and try to locate fish. Once you determine where the fish are you are ready to return with your fly fishing gear and let the fun begin. Can I fish here? Most of the canals are enter at your own risk and are posted as such. Some canals are posted NO walking, swimming, fishing, etc and you will be ask to leave if you try to fish there. What kind of fish can I find in the canal? You can find almost every kind of fish in our canals, but I am interested in finding Grass Carp (White Amur), the Common Carp, the colorful Koi, Mirror Carp, and even Goldfish will take a well presented fly. Your success can be influenced by a number of outside factors. Some days you have fast water rushing down the canal, and that usually means the fish are sulking and hanging out near the bottom where you can’t see them. Sometimes you can walk up or down stream to the next dam and get more fish- able water. This is a visual sport where you need to see the fish you are casting to, and lighting is very important. I usually fish more mid day. Fishing early and late in the day produces glare and shadows that don’t give you a good look at the fish. Carp are not shy about getting in the buffet line for food. That green band of algae on the canal bank will hold fish, and carp will eat it with great gusto, slurping, sucking, and moaning affectionately at their food, it’s almost obscene. The structure of a shopping cart discarded in a canal will hold fish. If vegetation falls in the water with enough regularity to form a seam, carp will eat it. Watch for flowers, seeds, berries, carp will feed just like trout eating insects. I have had better luck with casting to fish on the far bank or mid stream. Getting a good drift to a fish that is on the same side of the canal as you is difficult. Gear needs are simple: Rod - 9 foot 5 weight rod will work fine on the canals, your basic reel with a weight forward floating line will work well, and I use a 4 foot piece of 20 pound fluorocarbon to start and a 6 pound 4 foot long section of fluorocarbon as my tippet. I usually carry two boxes of carp flies, but will generally use a green rubber legged beetle as my go to carp fly in the canals. The canals are hard to remove hooked fish unless you have a long handle fish net. I also find that a stripping basket is helpful to keep me from standing on my fly line. Polarized sun glasses are a necessity for spotting fish. For those of you who are not ready to announce that you plan to go carp fishing, you may want to tell friends and family that you are going for a walk in the park. Little Green Guy... A favorite of DFC Trout Bum, Joe Staller Hook: size 14 nymph hook, Tiemco 3761 or Daiichi D 1560 Bead: 7/64 Gold Thread: 6/0 white or chartreuse Body: Chartreuse micro-chenille. I also tie some with olive. Tail/legs: small white round rubber legs, or orange barred legs like Spirit Rivers “Taran- tu-Leggs” Tying notes: The only thing even remotely challenging about tying this fly is the legs/ tail. To make these, I double over a single length of leg material (about 3” long) and lash it to the top of the hook, with the closed end of the loop facing back, and the open end facing the eye of the hook. Leave some room behind the bead when wrapping forward, so that you can take one or two wraps of chenille between the legs and the bead head. It is this wrap of chenille that forces the legs out to the side. Once the fly is tied, you can then cut open the back loop of rubber to form the split tail. You want the tails and legs to be a bit long—this drives the bluegills crazy. Backstory and fishing notes: I have used flies like this many years for bluegills. Over the years, the length of the tails and legs has increased a little bit, because the big bluegills have voted with their mouths! I usually fish two of these flies (an olive and a chartreuse), using a floating line, a 9’ 5X leader, and a very slow retrieve. Give the flies plenty of sink time before starting your retrieve. For whatever reason, the chartreuse version almost always out fishes any other color. Additional information, details & questions, catch me, Joe Staller at: [email protected] -or- 602-568-9431

I do fish. I think there is a connection between thinking and fishing mostly because you spend a lot of time up to your waist in water without a whole lot to keep your mind busy. Anthony Doerr Desert Fly Casters PO Box 6404 Chandler, AZ 85246
