On Saturday, Jan. 19, James Rashad Moss, 37, of Modesto, is arrested on a warrant citing him as a fugitive from justice. He was held on $100,000 bail. Just 20 minutes earlier, William Harry Thorpe, 65, of Norwalk, was arrested for being a NEWPORT sex offender transient. 0 Fair Game By TOM JOHNSON Restaurant Week offers plenty of eats for week two Week two of Restaurant Week is underway. Fourteen days of dining at some 60+ restaurants around town. The restaurants set up fixed price, multi-course menus ranging from $10 - $25 for lunch and $20 - $50 for dinner. In its 11th year, Restaurant Week was created by the Newport Beach Restaurant Association under the auspices of Newport Beach & Co. Last week they battled weather, but things look better for week two. “Despite some rain last week, many of the dining establishments have reported strong Restaurant Week-related business during the event’s first week. With a record number of restaurants participating this year, we have the broadest array of dining options ever offered and people are apparently not letting a little wet weather stand in their way of a tasty good deal,” said Gary Sherwin, Newport Beach & Co. president and CEO. You can find a list of participating restaurants here. Get out there and have some fun. • • • Speaking of rain, we finally got some. Halleluiah! Did you know that Newport Beach has Municipal Codes relating to permanent restrictions on water, even with the rainfall? For example, you can’t water outside during 48 hours after a rainfall; any automated water station at your home cannot be on for more than 15 minutes; runoff from over-watering is a no-no; you can’t wash down hard surfaces, like sidewalks and driveways; obviously you have to repair leaks quickly; fountains and other decorative features have to use recirculated water; and, if you’re washing your car in the driveway, you need a hose with a positive shut-off valve. Is there a water police monitoring this? Well, no. It’s really on the good neighbor policy. • • • The Newport Beach Public Library will present Kathi Koll discussing her memoir that was inspired by caring for her late husband, developer Donald Koll, next Tuesday evening, January 29. The book is titled Kick-Ass Kinda Girl: A Memoir of Life, Love and Caregiving. The memoir looks at her life following her husband’s debilitating stroke that dramatically changed their lives. “With an unflinching look at the difficult times and an ability to laugh at herself, while never losing hope for tomorrow, Kathi unveils a powerfully moving story of resilience and inspiration.” Koll is a Newport Beach resident. The event takes place in the Central Library Friends Room. For more information, go to www.newportbeachlibrary.org.

Author Flor Edwards, Apocalypse Child, February 5 from 7 - 8:30 p.m. Flor Edwards is an author who lives in Los Angeles. By age 12, she had lived in 24 different locations across three continents. Always on the move to escape the Antichrist and in preparation for the Apocalypse in 1993, her nomadic childhood prompted her to pen her forthcoming memoir Apocalypse Child. In her debut memoir, Flor movingly describes her early life growing up with her family and 11 siblings as a member of The Children of God, a controversial religious movement that many describe as an apocalyptic cult. For the first 13 years of her life, she grew up in the Children of God. The group’s nomadic existence was based on the belief that, as God’s chosen people, they would be saved in the impending apocalypse that would envelop the rest of the world in 1993. The group’s charismatic leader, Father David, kept the family on the move, from Los Angeles to Bangkok to Chicago, where they would eventually disband, leaving Flor to make sense of the foreign world of mainstream society around her. Apocalypse Child is a cathartic journey through Flor’s memories of growing up within a group with unconventional views on education, religion and sex.
