Pollen tube growth rates (PTGRs) of angiosperms are exceptionally rapid, a pattern 25 attributed to more effective haploid selection under stronger pollen competition. Paradoxically, 26 whole genome duplication (WGD) has been common in angiosperms but rare in gymnosperms. -

Australian Plants Suitable for Tamworth Regional Council Areas Eucalyptus blakelyi Photo Tony Croft Tamworth Group of Australian Plants Society As at July 2007 Eucalyptus blakelyi II TAMWORTH REGIONAL COUNCIL RAINFALL DATA Most of the Tamworth Regional Council area receives an average annual rainfall of 600 to 800mm except for the north- west corner on the Mount Kaputar plateau and the tablelands country from Bendemeer through Woolbrook to Hanging Rock above Nundle which often receives between 800 to 1000mm. Similarly temperatures vary across the region with average annual minimums on the tablelands and nearby areas between 6 and 9 degrees Celsius. A series of frosts are received across the entire region each winter. Average annual maximums are between 18 and 21 degrees on the tablelands, 21 to 24 degrees across most of the region and 24 to 27 degrees in the west of the region. 1. Barraba 2. Conservation Advice Eucalyptus Rhodantha Rose Mallee
THREATENED SPECIES SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE Established under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 The Minister’s delegate approved this Conservation Advice on 13/07/2017 . Conservation Advice Eucalyptus rhodantha rose mallee Conservation Status Eucalyptus rhodantha (rose mallee) is listed as Vulnerable under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cwlth) (EPBC Act) effective from the 16 July 2000.The species was eligible for listing under the EPBC Act as on 16 July 2000 it was listed as Vulnerable under Schedule 1 of the preceding Act, the Endangered Species Protection Act 1992 (Cwlth). The main factors that are the cause of the rose mallee being eligible for listing in the Vulnerable category are that the species has a small population size with a restricted and fragmented distribution (DEC 2006). The species can also be listed as threatened under state and territory legislation. For information on the current listing status of this species under relevant state or territory legislation, see http://www.environment.gov.au/cgi-bin/sprat/public/sprat.pl . Where they co-occur in some areas, the rose mallee naturally hybridises with Eucalyptus pyriformis (pear-fruited mallee) producing the hybrid, E. rhodantha var. x petiolaris (stalked rose mallee) (DEC 2006). As a hybrid, the stalked rose mallee is not eligible to be listed as a threatened species under the EPBC Act (TSSC 2006). Description The rose mallee is a low spreading mallee growing to 4 m high (DPAW 2006) with smooth greyish brown bark and whitish-grey branches (DEC 2006). The leaf is round to heart-shaped, usually pointed at the tip, 8 cm long by 8 cm wide, and has a distinctive blue-grey colour. -

Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. This includes all mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs and fish, 137 families of vascular plants (over 15,000 species) and a range of invertebrate groups. Description Tree to 12 m tall, rarely multistemmed or mallee-like. Forming a lignotuber. Soft fibrous, flaky, papery rough bark over most the trunk and larger branches, rough bark yellow-grey to yellow-brown to orange-brown. Large branches sometimes with grey to white to pinkish-grey smooth bark. Branchlets not glaucous. Juvenile growth (coppice or field seedlings to 50 cm): stems rounded in cross-section, hairy; juvenile leaves opposite or alternate, petiolate, ovate to rarely elliptical, 4–13 cm long, 2–6 cm wide, base rounded to rarely shallowly lobed, apex rounded to acute, dull blue-green to green, with stellate hairs. Adult leaves alternate, petioles 0.8–2 cm long; blade lanceolate, 6.5–14 cm long, (0.9)1.2– 3(4.5) cm wide, base tapering to petiole, concolorous to slightly discolorous, dull green to grey- green to yellowish-green, side-veins at a wider angle than 45° to the midrib, tertiary venation moderate to dense, intramarginal vein present and very close to the margin, oil glands island or intersectional or obscure. Inflorescence axillary single, peduncles 1.7–3.7 cm long, buds usually more than 7 per umbel, pedicellate, pedicels 0.4–1 cm long. -
