Arguing for continuities between the 1970s Cinemattachine and prior Mattachine tactics, Call’s own publishing business ventures, and discourses of sexual education, this article suggests that the organization continued to negotiate evolving sexual politics through the exhibition of pornography. Keywords Gay history, Hal Call, Mattachine Society, pornography, San Francisco ‘Tired of feeling guilty when you go to a porny movie?’ So queried an advertise- ment for the Mattachine Society’s Sex Education Film Series in the Bay Area Reporter, San Francisco’s gay newspaper, in November 1972.1 The Mattachine Society, best remembered as a homophile organization whose tactics were viewed as outmoded by the time of post-Stonewall gay liberation, had been screening explicit sex films in San Francisco since the prior year and would soon rebrand this effort as the Cinemattachine in 1973. -

For three years, Vaslav Nijinsky had garnered international acclaim for his unparalleled virtuosity and emotive performances. He had also earned a degree of “lilac-hued notoriety”1 for a rather public affair with his director, Serge Diaghilev. But on this late spring evening, Nijinsky’s queer eroticism began to outstrip his technical prowess in the public imaginary. For on this night, he abandoned the pirouettes and grand jetés for which he was famed and feigned masturbation on the stage of the Théâtre du Châtelet. Inspired by Mallarmé’s poem of the same name, Nijinsky’s daring choreographic debut, Afternoon of a Faun featured a forest-dwelling satyr entranced by a passing nymph. Ineluctably drawn to the disrobing Nymph, he attempts to seduce her, but she escapes, leaving behind only a scarf, which he spirits away to his lair. In the final moments of the dance, the Faun thrusts himself suggestively upon the abandoned token. Despite the scandal of Nijinsky’s simulated autoeroticism, the premiere of Afternoon of a Faun was and is widely recognized as the first modern ballet and as such created a new paradigm for viewing bodies in motion. -

Matt Connolly Solidification and Flux on the “Gay White Way”: Gay Porn Theaters in Post-Stonewall New York City Abstract This paper traces the exhibition strategies of two gay porn theaters in New York City from 1969-1973: the 55th Street Playhouse and the Eros I. It draws upon contemporaneous advertising and trade press to reconstruct these histories, and does so in the pursuit of two interconnected goals. First, by analyzing two venues whose exhibition protocols shifted over the course of this time period, this paper seeks a more nuanced understanding of how gay porn theaters established, maintained, and augmented their market identities. Second, it attempts to use these shifts to consider more broadly what role exhibition practices played in the shaping of gay men’s experiences within the porn theater itself – a key site of spectatorial, erotic, and social engagement. Pornification 19/7/07 10:56 am Page 23 –2– The Golden Age of Porn: Nostalgia and History in Cinema Susanna Paasonen and Laura Saarenmaa The mainstreaming of pornography is indebted to the success of feature-length hardcore films of the 1970s. Shot on 35 mm film, productions such as Deep Throat (1972), Behind the Green Door (1972), The Devil in Miss Jones (1973), The Opening of Misty Beethoven (1976) and Debbie Does Dallas (1978) were widely screened both in the USA and internationally. These films have since been estab- lished as classics (Buscombe 2004: 30) and milestones in both scholarly and popular porn historiographies. While some identify the so-called ‘golden age of porn’ through North American legislation and as ranging from 1957 from 1973 (Lane 2000: 22–3), it was in the 1970s and early 1980s that porn shifted towards the mainstream. In a trend titled by the New York Times as porno chic, pornography became fashionable, gained mainstream publicity and popularity (McNair 2002: 62–3; Schaefer 2004: 371; Wyatt 1999). During the past decade, this golden age has been reminisced in films such as People Vs. Larry Flynt (1996), Boogie Nights (1997) and Rated X (2000), numerous documentaries – including the critically acclaimed Inside Deep Throat (2005) – and books.1 This body of popular porn historiography depicts the decade as one of quality films with real stories, personal performers and talented directors, in contrast to the 1980s of video distribution, inflation of the porn industry, rise of AIDS and conservative backlash. With notable exceptions such as the French Le pornographe (2001) and the Spanish–Danish co-production Torremolinos 73 (2003), European histories have not been reminisced to the same degree. -

TAYLOR MEAD MEMORIAL SCREENING Who didn’t love Taylor Mead? Irrepressible and irreverent, made of silly putty yet always sharp- witted, he was an underground icon in the Lower East Side and around the world. While THE FLOWER THIEF put him on the map, and Andy Warhol lifted him to Superstardom, Taylor truly made his mark in the incredibly vast array of films and videos he made with notables and nobodies alike. A poster child of the beat era, Mead was a scene-stealer who was equally vibrant on screen, on stage, or in a café reading his hilarious, aphoristic poetry. -

Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Pornographic film and video have played an important role in gay male culture. Whereas heterosexual pornography has been accompanied by a serious stigma in the "straight" world, gay pornography has been characterized partly by the high esteem in which it is held in the gay male subculture. As a group that is both defined by its sexual activity and rejected by the majority culture for it, gay men have often seen in pornography an all-too-rare positive image of gay sexuality. Similarly, they have found in the exaggerated sexuality and marginal artistry of porn a campy rejection of the hierarchies of the heterosexual majority. As with straight pornography, gay male pornography can be divided into two categories, hardcore and softcore. Hardcore is the genre commonly associated with the term pornography. It includes explicit imagery of actual sexual activity to the point of climax, including visible penetration and ejaculation. Softcore is a less explicit alternative, generally focusing on nude or nearly nude bodies in sexual or sensual situations, but without views of penetration or visible climax. The sex is nearly always simulated in softcore, and it is often filmed with an emphasis on romance or mood. As porn diva Gloria Leonard once humorously proclaimed, "The difference between pornography and erotica is lighting." Because both the production and consumption of pornographic film and video are dependent on relatively high levels of technology, the genre's development has taken place primarily in the industrialized West. -
