CAULFIELD EXAMINES THE WEEKLY WRAP: By Andrew Caulfield KING FOR A DAY The great had a very good time with his third-crop 3-year-olds last week, with no fewer than six of them winning or placing at black-type level. Three of them won, with Obligate coming home 3 1/2 lengths clear in the Prix des Lilas, Mehdaayih 4 1/2 lengths clear in the Cheshire Oaks and six lengths clear in Lingfield=s Oaks Trial. For good measure, East finished a creditable third in the G1 Poule d=Essai des Pouliches, It=s worth remembering that this talented collection comes from a crop of fewer than 90 Northern Hemisphere foals, and they whet the appetite for Frankel=s considerably larger fifth crop, which reaches the yearling sales later this year. The first sale they worked together was the 2017 Magic BIG WEEKEND BOLSTERS Millions, where Shadwell's Angus Gold took a shine to a couple of Attunga's draft by Arrowfield's Not A Single Doubt. Gold ATTUNGA AHEAD OF GOLD would pay $450,000 for the filly out of imported Tapit (USA) mare Zighy Bay {USA}), a three-quarter sister to American COAST Group winner Sacristy (USA) (Pulpit {USA}). "She always struck as a really athletic filly that had a great walk and a good constitution," Nutt said of his first impressions of Qafila, who like all of Shadwell's Australian-based horses was sent to Lindsay Park to train. However, Nutt was a little surprised to see the filly show up in one of the first 2-year-old races in Melbourne, winning the Listed Debutant S. at Caulfield. "We always thought she would get better with time, so to win her first start as a 2-year-old in a stakes race was a bit of a surprise," he said.

Tough Filly Gets to Work Early Qafila would have five starts as a 2-year-old contesting both the G1 Blue Diamond S. and the G1 Golden Slipper but any thoughts of her being simply a speedy precocious type were Quafila quickly put to bed during her spring 3-year-old campaign as By Bren O=Brien David, Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig stepped her up in distance Bolstered by some significant recent success, including a with some success. SAEZ HANDED 15-DAYS TAPIT COLT A TIMELY INVESTMENT FOR WORMSER by Jessica Martini FOR DERBY RIDE Donna Wormser, a longtime presence on the sales scene, is mostly retired from the sport these days, but the horsewoman will be represented at next week=s Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2- Year-Olds in Training Sale by a pinhooking prospect with a half- sibling in the news. Wormser partnered to buy the colt by Tapit out of Visions of Clarity (Ire) (Sadler=s Wells) for $130,000 at last year=s Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Yearling Sale. At the time, the yearling=s juvenile half-brother by War Front had finished second in the GI Summer S. and fourth in the GIII Bourbon S., but War of Will would go on to establish himself as a bonafide GI Kentucky Derby contender with wins in the GIII Lecomte S. and GII S. After a dramatic, and well-documented, seventh-place finish in the Derby, War of Will will look to get back to the winner=s circle in Saturday=s GI Preakness S. Three days later, his half-brother will go through the sales ring in Timonium as hip 575 with the Wavertree Stables consignment. Timely Investment for Wormser cont. from p1

AI generally only pinhook at a limited level anymore,@ Wormser, who last consigned horses under her own name some 15 years ago and is now based in North Carolina, said. AIt is my only involvement in the Thoroughbred industry these days.@ Of her association with the Tapit colt, Wormser added, AThere was a pinhooking group formed and this horse was recommended to me. He was one of three 2-year-olds I am a part of selling this spring.@ War of Will was purchased by on behalf of for i250,000 at last year=s Arqana May sale and is now trained by Casse=s brother Mark. The family connection gave Wormser some inside information on the colt=s potential.

Hip 575, Tapit--Visions of Clarity | Thorostride photo AI knew of his existence and that he was well thought of by Mark Casse,@ Wormser said. AMy godson is Justin Casse, so he was able to give me some insight, but at that point he was still only thought of as a >grass horse.=@ Bred by Flaxman Holdings, the Tapit colt is also a half-brother to Group 1-winning Pathfork (Distorted Humor). Visions of Clarity is a half-sister to multiple Group 1 winner Spinning World (Nureyev). With the power-packed pedigree was Wormser surprised to be able to purchase the youngster for $130,000 last October? AI was,@ she admitted, before explaining, AThe parts were all there, but he was a May foal with a lot of maturing in front of him, which is why he is selling this late. There is a fair amount of Sadler=s Wells to him, but he has a very nice top line and is correct. He has really blossomed over the past 45 days.@ Ciaran Dunne, whose Wavertree consigns the colt to the Midlantic sale, agreed the May 13 foal (Thorostride video) is showing all the right signs. Timely Investment for Wormser cont.

AHe was very immature and backward as a yearling and is only now starting to mature, both mentally and physically,@ Dunne said. AHe is a colt who gives you the impression that he is only going to get better. Obviously being a brother to a horse like War of Will is a huge bonus and makes him a very exciting prospect.@

While War of Will=s exploits have him in the news, Wormser thinks it=s a pedigree that stands out all on its own. I think no vet from the group that took the videoscope should be on the panel. It's human nature to support the decision of the practice that employs the vet, so it's a definite conflict of interest.
